View 3 RepliesI am making a program in Visual Basic for a multilingual diccionary. The records are in Acces and I could add the russian version of the words easily enough. However when I call up the words in my program i get ? for each letter.Ex. Cat - gato - kat - Katze - chat - ?I had a problem in Coreldraw as well as there also you cannot use the cyrillic caracters. using Word and then importing each word in Coraldraw. Can the makers of Coraldraw and Visual Basic not find a solution as I am sure others have this problem and maybe also for arabic chjnees etc.
View 1 RepliesI would like to read a text file into an array of strings using System.IO.File.ReadAllLines. However, ReadAllLines strips out some odd characters in the file that I would like to keep, such as chr(187). I've tried some different encoding options, but that doesn't help and I don't see an option for "no encoding."
I can use FileOpen and LineInput to read the file without modification, but this is quite a bit slower. Using FileSystemObject also works properly, but I would rather not use that.
What is the best way to read a text file into an array of strings without modification in .net?
I have a text document that contains a bunch of data sets. However before each data set there is a number surrounded by brackets. I need to go instance by instance of brackets and pull the number between the brackets and the lines after the brackets until the next bracket. Here is an example of the text file that contains the data. I know how to read from a text document, do substring, do contain function, etc... I just am extremely stumped on how to do this. Here is an example of a couple entries of the text document...

Notice how different sections have a different amount of lines therefore a reading a fixed number of lines is not an option.

I don't know how I can read the first 13 characters in a variable like in C ( with char[13] ). My idea is to read the first 13 characters, skip the next 5 characters for change with 5 '-', and next read the rest of the line. I need to read as Binary because it have some special characters.
The resulting effect is that the characters are garbled.I've been looking around and there doesn't seem to be any solution.

-Open file as binary
-Start with position 57 and read the following characters until a 0 is found, print the whole name
Inside the binary file, all the files' names end with 0 (which should not be printed), example:
B000000.dat0
eft.dat0
G000000000.b70
For the above examples, the names that should be printed are B000000.dat, eft.dat, G000000000.b7 respectively. The code I wrote is below. The problem is that i am not sure how to read the name until the 0 is found since the names are variable in length and so are the extensions(dat, b7). Also some names have 0 in them which makes things difficult.

To automate mailmerge function in word, i need to join different elements to complete the mailmergedatasource. In one of these file are words with special characters like ©, §,¨, .... When openng these files for reading, streamreader transfoms the characters to unreadable signs. When i give a type to use to open like ASCII, Unicode,it works for one or tho characters but not for all. I have the same problem when the character is read correctly, with streamwriter output to a textfile. Word cannot read the textfile and ask to define which type of coding should be used. In most of the cases not all the characters can be converted to readable characters.

If there is a fail test result, I will show an alert to the operator and stop the checking process. I have a number of word documents I am converting. Everything is going great until I get a file that is read only. In this case I get a Save As prompt.
Is there any way to open the file in read/write format? I should have admin privileges so access isn't an issue.

Working on a small program that saves a file path to a text file and then when run opens the text file reads the file path which will be the only line in the file. I believe I have traced my problem due to the character that would be in the text file when hitting enter to start a new line which I assume is "vbCrLf".

Essentially I am trying to replicate the Windows 7 (In-Windows) activation key TextBox form. The Form where it will auto capitalize letters, remove or deny all non alphanumeric characters except dashes every 5 characters that will be auto-input.I assume this can be done with a fairly complicated replacement Regular Expression but I cannot seem to create one to fit the needs.
This is an Example of what I have right now, but it creates an infinite loop as it removes all characters including dashes, than adds a dash, which changes the text and removes the dash again.

I could come here with a specific need, but I'm at the point right now where I am more willing to work within the confines of keeping it simple.

3. how to close the file
Some specific questions:
Does the record length have to be constant throughout the file?
Can I read the nth record without reading the whole file?
Not sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:
GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"
....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days.So, I now have to change the code to:

If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then
Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:
If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

I have two textboxes. I type in one of them and the text gets copied in real time into another textbox. There is one catch. I need to replace specific character with something else.
If I enter a quote " in textbox1, it has to be replaced with " in textbox2.

With the shape of really large characters such as numbers and alphabetic characters + others, is there a way to get that shape as a REGION please?Imagine a really fat snake forming the letter S or two rectangles placed together to form a large letter L or a T like the shapes in TETRIS.
