Sql Server - Use Database Connection Strings In ASP.NET?

May 26, 2011

I've just started ASP.NET for real, and I was wondering if it is possible to use connection strings from Data Sources instead of hard-coding them. I've added my connection in Data Sources and it works, and I can also drag a table to a page in design mode, but I can't figure out how to access it in code. Here's what I get when I drag it in:

<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False"
DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1"
EmptyDataText="There are no data records to display.">[code].....

Create A Data Connection To A Database In SQL Server?

Sep 28, 2011

I have Visual Basic 2010 Express and SQL Server 2008 R2 (not Express) installed on my Windows 7 machine. In Visual Studio, I am attempting to create a Data Connection to a database in SQL server. Server Mgmt Studio is not running. When I attempt to add a connection in Database Explorer, to the AdventureWorks _Data database, I get the message "This file is in use. Enter an new name or close the file that's open in another program." There are no programs running except VB, except maybe for the SQL Server engine running the background.Please note that I can open and access tables within a database in code
within Visual Studio, I just can't add a connection in Database Explorer.Am I doing something wrong? I've been very frustrated on this issue for a long time

DataGridView - How To Change Connection String Or Database

Mar 14, 2010

I'm trying to add a datagridview in vb.net, but it does not allow me to change the connection string or the database that should be imported to connect to it. The only thing that I'm seeing is the previous ms sql database that I connected with datagridview and everytime I click the new connection, the window closes and it leaves me with the datagridview with the previous connection that I have. And its not applicable because, now I want to connect it with mysql. Not ms sql. Its some sort of a cache like feature in vb.net, how do I get rid of it. so that I can add the new connection for mysql? Do I need to reinstall visual studio 2008?

Sql - Visual Studio - Change Datasource After Initial Database Server Is Down?

Aug 22, 2010

Ok, so I've got this Visual Studio 2008 Project I was working with about a year ago perhaps. And this project had a datagrid that was linked to an external database running on a server off the internet. Now, this databinding was all done using Visual Studio 2008's built in features. But how can I now change the binding to a different server, without destroying the project? I've noticed that a lot of the code that Visual Studio creates makes a mess. So manually trying to change the datasource has allways f*cked up the whole project for me.

I'm not all that good with this stuff, that's why I used the built in features of Visual Studio. But I noticed that several things appear, like a binding source, and a dataset. Is it possible to do this? Perhaps even better, making these settings be controlled after the program has been compiled. The way it is now, it's all hard coded after compiling, and that kinda sucks. I remember trying to do this about a year ago, trying to bind these settings to variables stored in settings. But I never got that to work. Just throwing around ideas here

Sql Connection Error - Re-establish Connection To The Server

May 14, 2010

This will happen at random, and I can always just catch the error and re-establish connection to the server, but I am confused as to why. When doing lots of inserting into the sql server, I only establish one connection that is public, instead of many little connections. I had my doubts on a public sql connection, but it's been running great, and I've seen no problems until this morning. Again, this random moment I hit an error that stated, sql connection state is broken. Is it bad practice to just accept this error, and when it happens, re-establish the connection?

IDE :: Difference Between "Add Connection..." And "Create New SQL Database..." In Server Explorer?

Sep 14, 2010

I am using VS2010 and have been watching and learning from Beth Massi's great videos. I have built some test apps using her example of (under Server Explorer) - right clicking on "Data Connections" and selecting "Create New SQL Server Database, and in the server name just like she does, I type ".SQLEXPRESS", fill in the "New Database Name" and fill in my fields, build my tables, build a simple little windows form app. add new data source, etc. and everything works great. Then I try the "Add Connection" option again under Server Explorer and use the default (for me) of "Microsoft SQL Server Database file(Sql Client)", fill in a database file name (it creates a new one for me), "Test Connection" works, build my tables etc, and then build a simple little windows form app. add new data source and everything is great once again. Except I am not sure what is actually happening between these two options. Under the "Create New SQL Server Database option I see (in Server Explorer) a "myapp.dbo". Where is the actual database file? Under the "Add Connection" I see a "myapp.mdf" file in the Server Explorer. Also what happens when I "Publish" (deploy) my app? When I look under application files under Publish, I see the .mdf file listed as "Required" under the "Add Connection" option, but with the "Create New SQL Server Database" I don't see any database files listed? What is the difference between these two ways of creating a database for a VB Windows Forms Application?

Import Excel Data Into SQL Server - ERROR: "ODBC --Connection To {SQL Server} Servernamesqlservername Failed"

Aug 13, 2010

I am trying to do something fairly simple.. allow my user to import thier data from Excel into SQL Server, where it can be used by the application.To do this, I'm using the fairly simple code that is common everywhere I look:

strFilePath = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + fdlgFileOpen.FileName + ";Extended Properties=Excel 8.0"
connExcel = New OleDbConnection(strFilePath)
connExcel.Open()

[Code]...

Now, on my development computer this code works perfectly. The data imports, and I can go on my merry way.

On the TEST computer, this code throws the error: "ODBC -- Connection to {SQL Server} servernamesqlservername failed." This seems very odd to me, because I'm using exactly the same SQL Server and database to interact with the application, and all the other screens in the application work perfectly. The test computer CAN connect to this SQL Server, but it keeps throwing this error whenever I try import data from Excel.I've tried everything I can think of - using the server's IP address instead of the server name, sending the SQL Server administrator data along with the request, taking out the Trusted_Connection=Yes... nothing works. What is going on here? How can this code work fine on my computer, and hiccup on another?

Nov 7, 2010

Setup DataTableAdapters To Allow For Easy Code Change When Change Server Names?

Feb 20, 2012

I'm getting familiar now with using the Dataset Designer and how it makes for quick and easy updates and query of tables. I use to use the OleDB commands and leave the Connection String as a Global Constant so I can easily change it if the server name changes, or if we have to re-direct the .NET to another instance of the database.

But now that I use the Dataset designer I'm concerned that I maintain flexibility and support in the long run. how the Dataset designer works and where it stores it's connection string info? And how difficult that would be to update. It looks like I modify the App.config file, but I'm unfamiliar with this.

What am I getting myself into? It looks like a standard XML file. Is that it?
