I am writing a text editor program and I have written the new, open, save as, exit menu items but I am struggling with writing the save option.Now I have created the menu itself (well vb did, I just used insert standard items) but how do I code up the save menu option so that it updates the current document or if the documnt has not yet been saved bring up the save file dialog.Here is the code I have so far

I know I have some finishing touches such as messages and error handling and stuff but at the moment I want to get all the basics working,I think the save menu option is all I am struggling with at the moment.
I have written an MDI text editor, its almost complete, but I cant get the save as menu option to work correctly.

So whats happening is that it opens the dialog ok, saves the document to my chosen location correctly, but opens a new document and gives the new document my chosen file name and leaves my saved document with the file name New Document.But when I close all the open screens and then re-open my saved document its all as it should be.

Now if I take out the ( I get yet another error which states
"Argument not specified for perameter "File" of public sub WriteAllText(File as string, text as string, append as boolean)
All I want is when the user clicks the save menu item the document either saves the changes made to the current document or the save as routine is involked.
I'm new to Visual Basic, and I'm trying to figure out how to make a drop down menu to select the font in a text editor, like Microsoft Word. Does anyone know how I could do that? I'm using Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition.

I do not have code for save yet. When I click on Save I want it to save without popping up the dialog box. I do not have code for Save yet. When I click on Save As I want the popup box to show. I have to produce a basic text editor with buttons along the top and a richtext box below. I am currently struggling with 'Save if changes are made' objective. At the minute clicking my exit button rather than close/X (something i have to disable but havent yet) brings up the do you want to save message box regardless of any changes and also, clicking the yes button does nothing.

So I have made a text editor using rich text boxes and it is made to save/open rtf files. I have 3 issues I was hoping to get answers for...
1. Can I (and if so how) make it able to open/save text files and rtf files (so the user can choose which way to save it)?
2. I added the ability to color the words, but instead of coloring just the highlighted parts - it colors everything in the file. How do I change that so it only colors selected text?
3. I also added the dialog for Font changes, but it does not seem to work correctly. I want it to change font/size/etc of whatever is selected. Right now when I highlight stuff and then go into Font it allows the dialog box but does not actually change the font size/type/etc in the file it has open.

so i have a quite huge program. but lets say i have one label. and i want to save that. i have the code and everything for saving the text of the label. now i want to assign ctrl+s to automatically save the labels text once pressed instead of going through a menu to choose save.this is like a regular texteditor where u press ctrl+s and it saves.

I have AutoDragDrop enabled in my textbox. It drags the .jpg file into my program successfully. When I save it only saves the text not the .jpg file. I do realize that when I save the file I need to have the .jpg saved also and I am not sure how to accomplish this. I have checked multiple forums and googled of course. No luck as of yet.

Ok So I am trying to save text from a textbox to a rtf file. The Saves Text would come from the active mdi Child. However I can not figure out how to Save using active child just calling the actual form name. Below is my code so far.

Two(2) Things. I don't have the "Clickonce Option" when I select BUILD for the menu bar. I also don't have the "Step Into Option" from my DEBUG menu. Do I have a problem? Or do I need to turn something on?

I would like someone to show me how you would save the contents of "Listbox1" to a .txt file using the "Save As" Option. I know how to hardcode a savepoint in, but since there will be multiple users I would like the option to be up to the end-user.
View 4 RepliesI am trying to set up an app that has a menu and have each option run on a different thread. When I set up 2 thread to run I get the following error: Current thread must be set to single thread apartment (STA) mode before OLE calls can be made. Ensure that your Main function has STAThread Attribute marked on it. This exception is only raised if a debugger is attached to the process.From what I have researched, it says to make sure the openfile dialog function should be used with the main thread only. Since I have <STAThread()> added above the main I'm not sure how else to handle this. The main thread needs to be listening for the menu options and if I change it around it runs that option and the other threads hang. [code]
View 4 RepliesI am using sockets to send message between computers. I send the messages alright. What I want is when the message "x0x" comes, the client must be closed within 5 minutes. Teh admin can cancel the request by sending message "-xx" as well. The routine that checks for incoming connections and accepts messages uses WHILE TRUE...END WHILE since it must always listen. Once I get a message, I need to fire a timer control or other that fires within 5 minutes. But the program cant leave the WHILE TRUE at all. If i exit it early, the timer fires and the program does get exit. How do I fire the timer or other routine while still the WHILE TRUE routine checks for incomin connections and messages?

To create a test project for your class. Open the Persons project that you created in the previous lesson. is there any way to reference a particular code routine in VB.net external to the current loop/routine?Example:

where Routine A and Routine B are code sequences at the end of the entire program -- such as outside of the current sub or class? The idea would be to reference an otherwise repetitive code.
I did some research and i found that i will need to edit the registry.So if i make a folder called "Get Path" in the ContextMenuHandlers folder.When i click on the file in windows explorer or desktop etc i will have the option called "Get Path".Now for the value key what do i put inside?What i want is when the user right - clicks on the file my program starts up and displays the path of that file on a msgbox or listbox. I was thinking of letting the Windows Installer (.msi) doing this for me.

I add a button to a form each time the user clicks a menu option as:

This draws a small blue line at the bottom of the button to show it is highlighted. Just like the mouseoverbackcolor property on a button except this will draw the line. It works fine until you slide the mouse very fast between the buttons. It is as if the mouseleave event doesnt always fire.

I know that the data exists because it displays in the Message Box ( MsgBox("first item = " & ds.Tables(0).Rows(0).Item("NameLast").ToString())) and the executes fine, but for some reason, I can't get the text boxes in LeadsMod2 (Open as MDIChild) to update.
when i login i want a menu that says to load or create new (already made) but i don't know how to load a file as a whole, i can streamwrite and read and also save file dialouge but i'm looking for somtting different.if i saved the info for the editor seprate from the login screen (2 different projects????)

The readDB would read the database and set the variables and do whatever it needs to do. Then when they submit the form it would e-mail the form to whatever the email address was.
I have basic text report (.txt) that is created by a custom application. My client would like it to page break at a certain spot.
Does anyone have a routine that would allow me to insert PCL code into the file so that when printed it page breaks? I'd search for certain text and then insert the codes just prior to the text.
Certainly if someone has a better "mousetrap" then let me know.
I only just now realized that the project does not update when it saves until you quit out of Visual Studio. As such I now have 7 backups that are exactly the same, including the main file. I would have lost hours of work if not for finding a copy that somehow had all of my work saved to it. It was named the same thing as four other projects, though, with the other three being the same work from hours ago. Where is this temporary project? I cannot find it on my computer, and I'm afraid of losing all that work. Also, is there a way to do a Save All, and then something like "Save the whole project as" without quitting out of Visual Studio, looking through folders, finding the actual project folder, and copy pasting that? In other words, is there a way to do that in Visual Studio itself?
