Timer To Run In The Background Whilst Other Code Is Being Processed?

Mar 11, 2010

in my program it has a log in system already done by myself and once logged in you can do whatever i have coded in if you understand my meaning . what i want to add to it is a timer that can be edited that runs as a standby timer like with what a screen saver does and logs out after inactivity for a specified time now i have no idea where to stat with this so if some one could put me in the right direction or an example would be great.so i need it to start a timer once the mouse is not moving and no keyboard keys are being pressed and terminate the timer once keyboard keys are being pressed or mouse is being moved it's for an update that i am releasing on my publishers website for my program?

Check Login In MasterPage Before Any Other Code Processed

Nov 15, 2011

I'm developing an application which requires log in. I'm using Master Pages and a customer Web Control which is my main menu system. The main menu accesses database information to provide notifications and various things, none of which will work unless the user is logged in. I am trying to place the following code:
If Session("hgAdminUser") = "" And InStr(Request.ServerVariables("url"), "/Login.aspx") <= 0 Then _
Response.Redirect("Login.aspx") ' if userSession is empty, redirect to login page.

Into the top of my MasterPage code behind, but it's still trying to process scripts, the main problem being that it is running the .ascs file which requires Database access, which it can't do without the required parameters from Login. I've tried running it within a Page_PreInit sub, also Page_Load and Page_Init, but in all cases it ignores this (or probably doesn't ignore it, but errors come in before it deals with this) and returns a big fat ERROR due to functions that I don't even want it to be running!! How can I check for a session variable, which if not present cause all other scripts on the page to be ignored and redirect? This is all using VB.NET

Program Becoming Unresponsive Whilst Running Long Code

Jan 31, 2011

I'm currently trying to write a football simulator but am having issues with the computer becoming unresponsive. There are long lines of code (several thousand lines) that are executed over and over as one run of the code is equivalent to one second of game time. While the game is setup to be like Football Manager where you watch the game live, there will also be cases where the entire game is simulated without you watching. When doing a full sim of a game, I just have a loop which executes the code block 7200 times (games go for two hour roughly).

At the moment this takes about a minute but even when I get it down to the desired 5-10 seconds or so, I dislike the fact that the computer becomes completely unresponsive during this time. In a round there are 9 games and you'll be simulating without watching 8 of them. You're looking at 1-2 minutes of simulation time or possibly more. I can't have a loading screen that long! How can I program the game so it runs these simulations yet the game still remains responsive? It'd be fine if the user could muck around in the menus and stuff while the simulation runs.

Synchronize The Timer Event So That The Timer Executes From The Background Worker Thread?

Apr 23, 2009

I have a windows application that need to process som quite time consuming jobs. In my first try i did all processing under
the form thread. The result was bad response and update of the form due to the heavy jobs.To get around the problem with bad response from the form i created a new class "processing" where i put all the data processing. Then i instanciated a background worker where i in the "doWork" sub created a new instance of "processing".The "processing" class creates a timer from system.timer, and the timer drives the processing. On the Timer event Elapsed the timer starts a new thread from the thread pool.

My problem is now when i want to asynchronously close the background worker (with the corresponding function call what ever it is called ...) there is still a timer thread out there that causes exceptions for me.

1. How can i close my background worker and at the same time have the timer to be stopped?

2. Is there a way to synchronize the timer event so that the timer executes from the background worker thread?

3. Is there a better approach for me to adapt?

VS 2008 - Stopping And Starting Timer In Background Worker

Oct 18, 2009

I have a background worker which runs, at the start it stops a timer which has it's interval set to 500ms, at the end of the bgworker sub it starts it again. I've debugged and found out that the line that starts the timer up again (tTimer.Enabled=True) runs. However the timer does not resume. I'm don't know, but I'm thinking perhaps because I'm stopping and starting it on another thread it's not resuming properly or the sub it was attached to (via AddHandler) has been reset or something so it's running but not running the code in the sub it was attached to. If I never stop the timer in the code, it continues to run just fine, but I need it to stop at the start.

Asp.net - FileUpload Within A Wizard Control, Processed At The End

Oct 17, 2011

how to upload to FTP, however when using the FileUpload control inside a Wizard control, when you move to the next step, the File you selected gets cleared because of the postback. I need to be able to rename the file according to the results from the Wizard before uploading. So...

I finish my wizard It uploads some stuff to a database Renames the file according to those results Uploads the renamed file to the FTP server

I suspect I will need to follow a procedure something like this, having an upload button next to FileUpload

On "Upload" button click stream the file to the Web Server. Complete the Wizard. If the wizard completes successfully, rename file and stream to FTP server. If the wizard fails, what? Delete the file from the web server? How?

I think I understand the process, how to split my FTP Upload function into two parts with the proper error handling for when the wizard fails.

Protected Sub UploadFile(ByVal NewFilename As String)
Dim myFtpWebRequest As FtpWebRequest
Dim myFtpWebResponse As FtpWebResponse

VS 2008 Many Messages Sent To Server - Few Processed?

Jan 20, 2010

I'm using a modified version of John's Message server, instead of passing a string I am passing a serializable object called "DataClass".This is my modified Read sub to process data that gets sent from the client to the server:

vb.net
Protected Overrides Sub Read(ByVal ar As IAsyncResult)
Dim asyncState = DirectCast(ar.AsyncState, ReadAsyncState)
Dim buffer = asyncState.Buffer
Dim client = asyncState.Client
Dim host = Me.clients(client)

[Code]...

The message is received fine when they aren't in quick succession, however I tested it by sending like 1000 messages almost instantaneously and it only processed about 2. Obviously this isn't acceptable, but I am unsure how to properly implement some type of queue that will ensure all backlogged messages will get processed.

Single Task Processed By Multiple Backgroundworkers?

Jun 23, 2010

I have an array that is a list of files in a folder, I'm processing the files and renaming them. It takes about 15 minutes to rename them all, this is done daily. I currently have 1 Backgroundworker to handle this and update the UI.

My question is, this: How can I use more than 1 Backgroundworker to use more than 25% of the CPU to do this?

Split the array into 3 parts and call 3 separate workers to do their part?

I want to detect when the values have changed and prompt the users to confrim if they want to update.

When the form is first initalised and when then binding navigator moves to the next record the text_changed event fires on textbox where I have a boolean to determine if things have changed.

Is there a way to set my boolean only when valid data changes have occured or a better way to detect if things have changed
