Winforms - Run Code On Exit .net?
Dec 6, 2011I would just like to know how to run code in vb.net when the program is closed with the red cross in the top right of the screen.

View 2 RepliesWhen I close my VB.NET application it occasionally yields the following error code: The program '[1584] Foo.exe: Managed' has exited with code -1073741819 (0xc0000005). This error only occurs when one of the MDI child windows is maximized and then the program is subsequently closed. When I step through the code, the error appears to be generated after the execution of my "custom" code is complete. What might be the cause of such an error? Where might I find more information about this exit code (Google and Bing were little help - maybe I didn't search for the right thing)?

I have managed to create and code a file menu exit with the following code, however I just can't seem to find out how I am able to edit the red X in the top right hand side of the form next to the minimise and maximise buttons?
Private Sub ExitToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ExitToolStripMenuItem.Click
Dim close As String
close = MessageBox.Show("Are you sure you want to exit?", "Exit Log Book", MessageBoxButtons.YesNo, MessageBoxIcon.Question)

What does the 128 error code mean ? The version of vbc.exe used is the one in the .NET 2 (SP2) folder. Forcing the compiler to work in a new dedicated temp directory does not help (we update TMP and TEMP env variable on runtime, we checked that each vbc use a dedicated temporary folder based on process id and some static counter)

I have been getting sometimes with SOME libraries (be it included in the framework or not).[code]I'd expect the func.Call() to return an exception if something is up, or do anything to error out, but here it just murders my method which returns instantly! The same stuff here is also in a loop, which doesn't get any more iterations, it just stops executing this function and continues running the program.

View 1 RepliesI'm having a bit of a problem getting my application to close properly. Basically I have one main form from which all other forms open. If a user tries to close that main form, I want to bring up a MessageBox asking if they want to exit the application.However, when I try to do that it asks the question twice. It seems that the Application.Exit() is triggering the FormClosing event again for some reason, but I don't know of another way to exit the application. BTW, the main form isn't the startup form so I can't use the option to close when the startup form closes.
View 9 RepliesNow I have a sub to validate a bunch of textboxes and combo boxes.I previously used many IF statements to validate and pop up different messageboxes and Exit Sub in every IF statement.But I heard that too many Exits will decrease the efficiency and they were not recommended to use. Instead, nested IF is better because it will let the process naturally go to the end.Then I found out that if I use nested IF,it will be hard to read, since messageboxes are all separated from conditions.

I have a working Windows Forms app (split into an EXE and a few DLLs). Now I've been asked to look at creating another app (MyAppLite) that has only a very small subset of the functionality. Think of it as similar to MS Word Viewer vs. MS Word.
Everything that I need to build MyAppLite is contained in the main solution - essentially I need to use a couple of the WinForms and whatever bits in the DLLs they call into.
What would be the best way to do this?
I was thinking of creating another Project in my solution for MyAppLite, then adding the necessary source files as links (using Add Existing Item > Add As Link in Solution Explorer).
I definitely wouldn't want to maintain 2 copies of the source code. FYI it's a .NET 2.0 VB app, using VS2008.
I've a somewhat unusual feature to implement and I don't know if it can be done without much effort.A WinForms application has a help file (well, not HTML help, but simply a HTML file with a reference sheet). When user presses F1 button a form with a web-browser control in it displays showing this file. The client wants this HTML file to contain buttons/checkboxes which a program should respond to.For example, if a user clicks a HTML button in the help file some value should appear in a textbox on the main form, etc. Is it altogether possible
View 1 RepliesI have a "legacy" VB.NET application (winforms) written for .NET 1.1, and re-compiled under 2.0 that produces a report in HTML via a custom XmlTextWriter wrapper that is suited for HTML. The user then would print the report into pdf if they wanted to.
That was 2003, and now technology has changed a bit, especially within the C#/VB.NET world, and customers want to skip the HTML part, and go to PDF directly. What are my options for open source, or low cost PDF libraries that work well with .NET and must support tables with pictures (generated bitmaps from code) and text.

What do I want to achieve: I want to perform some time consuming operations from my MDI winforms application (C# - .NET). An MDI child form may create the thread with the operation, which may take long time (from 0.1 seconds, to even half hour) to complete. In the meantime I want the UI to respond to user actions, including manipulation of data in some other MDI child form. When the operation completes, the thread should notify the MDI child that the calculations are done,so that the MDI child can perform the post-processing.Should I use explicit threading (i.e., create explicit threads), thread pools? Or simply just propose your solution. Should I create foreground or background threads?And how does the thread communicates with the GUI, according the solution you propose?
View 7 RepliesI have a grid containing rows flagged with different priorities. I want to color the high priority rows red, low ones blue, etc. I'd like to set the shade based on a mathmatically calculated gradient rather than arbitrarily assigning colors to specific priorities. How can I extract a single color from a single point along gradient?
View 1 RepliesI have just done my program, just skeleton not completely, the final problem has not been solved up to this time.When I run my application, the Icon of its will be showed at TaskTray. I would like the icon is there when I exit fom of application and then If I double click on the Icon, the application will be showed.
View 5 RepliesI don't know what this is called so I've struggled to find an answer from google but I have a vague memory of it from t'old days.I've sub-classed (* see below) about 8 framework controls, overriden some properties and added some functionality into each one.The changes I have made are identical in every case. If I make a change, I have to go through each class and apply the same change there.I was hoping there may be a keyword such as <IncludeSourcefile "common.vb> that I can put into each class.
(* note) I use the term sub-classed but I don't know if that's the correct terminology. I've also seen it used for call-backs. Is sub-classed the correct term to use?
Is it possible to set a project default for VB.NET winforms projects so that the default Modifier for controls added to winforms is Private (not Friend)?I know there's a "modifiers" property in the properties window so I can set it for each individual control however I would like to change the project so from now on myself and other developers have to specifically decide to change from friend to private. (Which I would strongly discourage them from doing).I believe there is no way of doing this, but on another forum a while ago someone mentioned it would be possible with an add-in (but didn't name the add-in or where to get it).

View 3 RepliesI have a VB.NET form (CopyScenarioForm) with a OK button (DialogResult property = OK) and also assigned it as 'Accept Button" for the Form.
I show this form from my main Form (mainForm) using
If DialogResult.OK = CopyScenarioForm.ShowDialog() Then
DoSomething()
End if
Now when user clicks on the CopyScenarioForm.OK button, I want to validate his entries and if invalid I want to 'Exit Sub' from the OK button's click handler but when I do that the form still closes out and DoSomething() gets executed. Is there a way to stop this and keep the form alive and only exit if the inputs are valid. I noticed, if I change the OK button's DialogResult property to 'NONE' instead of 'OK' then it doesn't cause it to close. but then how Do I know how the user exited the form to execute DoSomething().
I have been playing with adding labels and text boxs to a form by using code I would like to add a exit button

I have done a lot of searching and cannot find a solution to my problem of, my application appearing in the processes even after exit.
Note: It doesnt appear in the processes due to the type of exit i have used after the click function happens.
