Actually I have a vb.net desktop application, it's quite a large application , POS actually. It was working fine since last few days, when it started acting up. What happening now is, while running smoothly it just closes automatically, no error nothing?!?

I have a piece of code connecting to my database retrieving data. I was just testing the form on another computer and everytime it loads this specific form it closes the form.You can see the lines I had to comment out in order for the form to NOT close on load. Is there something possibly that needs to be installed on this other computer? running XP pro 32 bit.

Instead of showing Rigger.vb and then closing form1.vb, it closes the whole thing. I need it to leave Rigger open, and close form1
I'm using several forms, each requiring access to the serial port. When I switch between them the port is deactivated. The port is activated through a special library command. How can I keep the port open and provide access for the other forms? I'm reopening the port triggered by form_load for form2 but that only works when I go to form2. When I come back to form1 the form_load trigger for form1 doesn't open the port.

I have created an application that uses two forms one is displayed on a touchscreen and is a basic input form, the other is displayed on a large display monitor and is basically an information form, both displays are connected to the same pc. The program works great I have just one annoyance is if the program is restarted it displays both forms on the touchscreen and I have to drag the information form onto the big display. Is there a way to specify on load that each form gets displayed maximized on a certain screen so I don't have to drag one form onto the correct screen?

The above code is what I used in VB6 to close all forms associated with my programs before my program closed. I have been searching for information on how to make sure all forms are closed when closing a VB2008 program.
I have seen info on using the Project Property Shutdown mode When startup form closes and I currently have this set.
Is this all that is really necessary? Will the garbage disposal close everything else to free up RAM?
Also, if I have several forms open and want to close all from the main form without closing each one individually, what is the best approach? Is there a collection like in VB6, go through the collection, compare it to the name of the main form and close it if it is not the main form?
How to make my forms resize automatically. here's the situation. I have my intro screen, which a user may want to maximise. Once this is maximised, the whole program should stay maximised. Again, if the user chooses to restore the window to its default size, the whole program should remain in that default size. However, once the user clicks the button "Press here to start" on the intro screen, the form automatically reverts to its original size if it was maximised. I also need to be able to stretch the contents in the correct ratios to fit the new screen size.

The problem is this solution is not global. It will only work on text boxes with the name "OWNER_NAME". Writing out hundreds of variations for every text input there might be for name would not be very smart. There must be an easier solution?

I tried using MyForm2_Load, MyForm2_Activated and MyForm2_Shown but the checkbox checked state of the second form always changes the checkbox in first form. The code below works if I check the checkbox in either form, the other changes to match it. The problem occurs only when MyForm2 is first loaded. How can I get it to work the way I want it?

In the early generations of VB.NET visual studio, I used to see an automatically generated region named "Windows Form Designer generated code" that includes the code that generates the controls at the surface of a form. But what happened with VS 2008, I can't see that region any more ? Where are the lines of code that are automatically generated that create controls and set there properties ????? Is there a way to automatically resize a windows form to fit a smaller display? I created a program on a computer with a 12" display, everything works fine. However, when I load the same program on a computer with a 8" display, I am not able to view all the contents on the windows form. Is there a way to correct this without manually resizing all the contents on the form?
View 1 RepliesI caused the VB.NET2008 IDE to do something extremely odd and unintentional with some code I was writing. As some of you know, I mostly write programs for industrial equipment. On one of our products, I needed to make certain forms automatically close after a timeout period. To do this, I began programming a usercontrol with a Timer on it (interval = 1000) and a ProgressBar. Timer.Enabled was set to the Enabled event so I could toggle it. When the control counted to it's timeout period, it would call Me.ParentForm.Close
So I build my project, and drop it on a form in the IDE and I see it begins counting! Huh... I had no idea timers were active in the IDE. I wonder what happens when it hit's it's trigger? I figure probably nothing since Me.ParentForm was actually the designer. When it triggered, the whole IDE crashes without save. I tried it twice now. Here's my

I am making an application that manages a MySQL DB on a server. Its working perfect and no errors...The problem is if I have the application opened and I do one of the followings:-Minimize the application-Change focus to another window like MyDocuments Folder, Internet Explorer or whatever I have opened.-It not only happens while in the VB.NET environment.Also to the final compiled executable.-Continue after verifying a variable with a Break Point (F9), just closes the application.-If I make the application form minimize through code it also closes the application (WindowState Minimized)

I am in the process of moving a program from development to deployment. Program built with VS2005 and .NET 2.0. On one of the computers I need to deploy on, I'm having a problem. Very early in the program, seemingly before the main form_load routine begins, I'm getting an exception. But I can't see the information about it, except for a fleeting split second.As a part of its normal operation, my program (a Windows Application) creates a console for itself, using AllocConsole. This takes place as part of the constructor of a global variable, so it comes before form_load. The console appears, without contents. Then pops up a window saying, "<program> has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." When I click on the Don't Send button, a full page of "unhandled exception" information appears -- for a fleeting moment, far less than a second. Then the console closes, because the program has closed.I've tried everything to get at this information. I tried running the program from a cmd console, instead of letting it create its own console. No output appears at all. I'm still working on remote debugging, but I can't get that to work either.

View 6 RepliesI'm writing an application in which a user can add, change and delete members from a list of members, and the adding and changing is done in a dialog box with some input fields.The problem is that when the user presses the OK button it should test whether some combobox is still empty, since this will otherwise return nothing and that will create an error somewhere else in the program. I do this within the OK_Button_Click event of the dialog box by testing whether the selectedItem is equal to nothing, if not it calls me.close, but if it is equal to nothing it displays a messagebox indicating that the user should still pick something from that combobox.Now the problem: when the OK button is clicked in the messagebox the dialog box also closes, even though the me.close isn't executed.
