Nov 14, 2011I am working on arrays and I am currently having trouble with searching and finding arrays. In this example, the user should be able to enter a Name, and it will output that person's stats.
Here is the text file (note, I should be able to go to this text file, add a few more names and the code should still work, which is why I am using loops,arrays,text files instead of if and else statements),
Kobe,29,6,4
Allen Iverson,28,7,4
Jason Kidd,12,10,9
So if the user enters Jason Kidd in the text box, this will display in another text box:
Jason Kidd averaged 12 points, 10 assist, and 9 rebounds.

All right now is the searching part. I really do know how to search for what the user entered and display the statement in a text box. I kind of have an idea of how to just get the name, but for it to get the name and then all the data for that name puzzles me even more.-I tried using .contain, indexof and few others.
I know to display the information in the text box will be something like:
textboxoutput.text = PlayerName & " averaged " & PlayerPoints & " points, " & PlayerAssist &" assist, and " PlayerRebounds " &" rebounds"
So basically, I want it to where the user can enter a basketball players name and display the values for that name.

I started a basic vb.net class for my fall semester of high school, and although I've learned a lot, my goal since the start of the semester has been to do this. I realize there are simpler way of assigning card values than writing 52 if then statements, but I'm planning on doing other things with the statements. As you can see, my main plan of action is to generate a random number for each card, loop through the array list to make sure the random number representing that card hasn't been assigned before, use the value to select the card, and then add the randomly selected number to the array list so it won't be used again (non-repeating random numbers).
1) I'm trying to represent all the numbers with Numberlist.Item(X) and that doesn't work because either a) x represents any one number or b) x always represents only 0, which means it only checks the first number.
2) I think I've read something about using this method for generating random numbers in a loop, that it doesn't work for some reason.

Preserve An Array Inside A Class Method?
Mar 30, 2010I have been learning about OOP and classes from a book and one of the question is the book has asked to create a simple Saving/Checking accounts Program. The question says that most of the functionality must be done through an Accounts Class, and this Acoounts class must inherit certain private fileds from an base class 'Transaction.
The question also says that data from the Saving/Checking accounts Program must be read to and from a text file, and these functions must be done within the Acounts class.
i have done everything the question asks to the best of my knowlegde and understanding but when it comes to storing and retieving data from the textfile i cannot utilise the array i created to store the textfile data onto it.
Bank Account.Write a program to maintain a person's Savings and Checking accounts. The program should keep track of and display the balances in both accounts, and maintain a list of transactions (deposits, withdrawals, fund transfers, and check clearings) separately for each account. The two lists of transactions should be stored in sequential files so that they will persist between program sessions.
Consider the form in Figure 11.12. The two dropdown combo boxes should each contain the items Checking and Savings. Each of the four group boxes corresponds to a type of transaction. (When Savings is selected in the Account combo box, the Check group box should disappear.) The user makes a transaction by typing data into the text boxes of a group box and pressing the button. The items appearing in the Transactions list box should correspond to the type of account that has been selected. The caption of the second label in the Transfer group box should toggle between "to Checking" and "to Savings" depending on the item selected in the "Transfer from" combo box. If a transaction cannot be carried out, a message (such as "Insufficient funds") should be displayed.
The program should use two classes, Transaction and Account. The class Transaction should have properties for transaction name, amount, date, and whether it is a credit (deposit) or debit (withdrawal/check). The class Account, which will have both a checking account and a savings account as instances, should use an array of Transaction objects. In addition, it should have properties for name (Checking or Savings) and balance. It should have methods to carry out a transaction (if possible), to display the list of transactions, and to load and retrieve the set of transactions into or from a sequential file. The events InsufficientFunds and TransactionCommitted should be triggered at appropriate times.
Hint: In order for an Account object to display a list of transactions, a list box should be passed to a method as an argument. The method might be declared with Sub EnumerateTransactions(ByVal lb As ListBox).

When I add this object to an array list I typically can access this using myarray(0).color but intellisense doesn't 'know' that I have a 'test' object inside the array. It would let me type myarray(0).whatever but would then crash if I made typo. It seems like I should be able to let it know what type of object I am trying to work with inside the arraylist. Part Serialization Looping Or Even Linq?
Sep 8, 2010I have a generic dictionary collection with a LOT of data classes, I am serializing this data and sending across IP. I need to cut down this collection into seperate messages as it is too large for my protocol to handle (and I am not changing that!).So, I would love a way to part serialize the data in say 25k (number not size) of classes, but I have not seen this done. I could manually loop through and create 25k lists of this data into new lists and then re-create at the other end, assuming I can use Join or AddRange. There is no GetRange on a collection.Is there a way in linq to select a range from a collection, or any other methods anyone has used?

Apr 17, 2012These are the directions for the assignment.So far I am able to get the file read and printed onto a list box.The book we have for the class does not clearly talk about using the array of structure method with formatting an imported text file.After that I'm pretty much having a bit of trouble with everything else.I know I can figure most of it out but what I'm having a big amount of trouble with is the array of structures that he wants.I know that when I have the file imported that I need to save it temporarily and go through it and at every ":" put it in an array and save that spot and then keep scanning through the file. I know it is going to be a for loop using the index to count through but I'm not sure if how to start it.This is how the text file that he wants sorted out looks.

This is giving me the strange error: "Range variable name cannot match the name of a member of the 'Object' class."I can get round it by wrapping the string in a VB StrConv method, with a setting of "Nothing":String.Join(",", (From item In oArray Select StrConv(item.ToString(), VbStrConv.None)).ToArray())
However, this seems like a bit of a hack and I would like to avoid it.Does anyone have any ideas when this problems occurs, and any better ways to get round it?

May 27, 2009I've got the following issue: I want to make my program change the Backcolor property of all textboxes inside a TabControl. The problem is that one of the Tabs has got another TabControl in it, and I need to change those too.I'd like to to it all at once, but I'm getting an error using this code.

Updating Array Length While Looping Array
Oct 9, 2009I am working on a code that should capture the color of a pixel in a bitmap and then check if the 8 surrounding pixels have the same color. If the checked surrounding pixel HAS NOT the same color it will be ignored, otherwise if it HAS the same color, it should check for its own 8 surrounding pixels and so on.
To do that, I have created an array that starts with a single entry (the x,y coordinates of the initial pixel). So, when a pixel with the same color is found it is pushed to the end of the array. I used a for each loop supposing that VB would keep looping until the end of my array - and since it is growing, the last position of the array would be always pushed until I have not more pixels to be checked.
The problem is that VB is not respecting it, and is considering my array as if it had just 1 entry. Seems that it catch the size of the array when it enters the loop, and regardless the fact I have pushed new items to the array it doesnt keep looping it.
How can I force VB to update the end of array position while looping it? Although I think it wouldnt be necessary, here it goes the code I have so far...

Use The Steamreader Method For Part?
Aug 17, 2011I know that I probably need to use the Steamreader method for part of this, i'm just unsure if it's possible. Basically what I want to do is to create an application that will call a "Settings.txt" file to run a sequence of subs an functions, so if I need to add anything new as far as (location/table/sqlfield etc) I just adjust/add it to the Settings text file instead of having to recompile the application itself.
So Is it possible to have the values of the text file like this? (Comstock, Detroit, Tigers) or (Comstock:Detroit:Tigers) an pull them into the application as string values? I'm going to have several hundred rows like this mind you the data in them will be all different.
