ToolStrip On A Databound Form - Toolstrip Buttons Don't Receive Focus In The Normal Way ?
Mar 24, 2009I really want to make use of the toolstrip and databinding but these two technologies keep conflicting with each other. I think the root cause is something to with the fact that the toolstrip buttons don't recieve focus in the normal way.
I invite you to try the following:-
1. Create a form and put some text boxes a tool strip with a save button on it.
2. Write a query or sproc to get a datatable back and bind your text boxes to the field in the datatable.
3. In the code behind your Save ToolStripButton put some code that makes an arbitrary change to a field on the dataset (it doesn't matter whther this field is bound to a text box or not). eg:-
m_DataTable.Rows(0).Item("CommissionRatePerc") = "0.0000"
4. Put a breakpoint in the save and run the form.
5. Make some changes in the text boxes. Do not leave the last text box but rather click save while a text box whose contents you have edited still has focus.
6. When your code hits the breakpoint, query the value of the data table field that is bound to the text box you were editing when you clicked save - it will still contain the unedited value. Unless you do something about it that unedited value is going to get saved back to your DB.
We did get around this problem by explicetely setting the focus to another control on the form before saving. That worked most of the time because it prompts the text box to flush it's value back to the datatable (nb EndEdit does not work, although you'd have expected it to). However, and this is the reason I suggested you add a line of code that changed a value in the underlying datatable in step 3, if you change a value in code in this way before the value from the text box get's flushed back then it doesn't seem to matter what you do, the user's current edit is simply lost. They will still show in the text box, though, leading your user to believe that the change has been committed when it hasn't. Our final solution is that we never ever change a value in the adtaset in the code behind our toolstrip buttons. That's working but it's a pretty big restriction.
.net - Provide Access To This Custom DAL?
May 13, 2010I'm writing a custom DAL (VB.NET) for an ordering system project. I'd like to explain how it is coded now, and receive some alternate ideas to make coding against the DAL easier/more readable. The DAL is part of an n-tier (not n-layer) application, where each tier is in it's own assembly/DLL.
The DAL consists of several classes that have specific behavior. For instance, there is an Order class that is responsible for retrieving and saving orders. Most of the classes have only two methods, a "Get" and a "Save," with multiple overloads for each. These classes are marked as Friend and are only visible to the DAL (which is in it's own assembly).
In most cases, the DAL returns what I will call a "Data Object." This object is a class that contains only data and validation, and is located in a common assembly that both the BLL and DAL can read.To provide public access to the DAL, I currently have a static (module) class that has many shared members. A simplified version looks something like this:

This cleans it up a bit, but it leaves a lot of classes that only have references to other classes, which I don't like for some reason.Without resorting to passing DB specific instructions (like where clauses) from BLL to DAL, what is the best or most common practice for providing a single point of access for the DAL?

Oct 18, 2009I have a need to provide mouse coordinates and click details to the sub-classes of an application. The details are stored in a typed variable in the main class, as they are not processed when the event occurs.
What is the correct way of getting the classes to refer to variables in the parent class that instigated them? I realise this is not standard practise, but at this stage in the project I am converting code from a procedural language and need to do this as an intermediary step. Using the mouse events is also not possible, as this is a DirectX-oriented real-time program, and some things still have to be processed procedurally. They have to be stored via the event and then processed manually.
I may have dozens of instances of the classes, so distributing the mouse data every time it changes is not a good option. Ideally, the class should be able to retrieve the data when it needs it.

I though this meant that I need to put my Acces mdb in the root folder of the project but that didn't help. why I'm getting this error? If I click on more information I get an message saying information not found.

Nov 6, 2009What is the best way to provide strongly typed access to the session object? I am planning on turning on Option Strict, which is causing the compiler to complain about my lazy programming technique of directly accessing the session object:

My initial thought is to create a class that wraps the session and provides strongly typed properties for the information stored in the session. However, I cannot decide if the class should be a singleton, or instantiated on every use, or where the code should reside (i.e. within the web project or within a class library).
I'm leaning towards a singleton in my class library, but I don't know if that is the best solution, or if I am missing any other possibilities.

Provide A Status Window In VB2008 When Calling Access 2007 Runtime Modules?
Mar 25, 2012I am looking for some help in finding the best way to display a progress window for a module I am working on.I have a VB2008 app using an Access 2007 db. One of the MODULES in the Access db does a masterfile update and I want to show the user what is happening in process.
The VB2008 app calls the Access module to do all the work which is FAR FASTER than having VB2008 do all the work.The goal is to have a small window popup and display the progress. Once the process is done, close the window. How would you do this? Use a Access form? That works but it not clean looking at all. Is there something else that might work better?
Something like a msgbox that opens and can be updated while the process runs. Once the process is done, it can be closed. The user will not need to interact with this window - it's just to show the applications progress.

Imagine I define an interface to provide a ReadOnly Property (i.e., just a getter for a given value) :

Jan 19, 2009I'm trying to create a "wrapper" DLL to provide additional functionality on top of an existing DLL. Here's what I'm doing, it may be the wrong approach.The existing DLL is basically a .net version of WinSock. It has lots of public methods and events.The DLL I'm trying to create will provide specific file processing methods, and notification events, which will then utilize the WinSock DLL totransfer the files. This wrapper Dll is intended to encapsulate all of DLL #1 methods and events.
So what I'm doing is having my new DLL reference the existing one, and create a new set of events, some of which get raised by handling DLL #1 events.So I end up with two DLLs, one of which is dependent upon the other. When I try to use my DLLS in a Forms app,I am able to use my wrapper to call methods in the WinSock DLL. Some events that are raised within my wrapper are properly handled by the forms app.The events that do not work (get raised) are the ones which are raised by handling the other DLL's events.This seems to be because the WinSock DLL's events never get raised, when they apparently should be. The WinSock object in question was declared as "WithEvents".
