I'm using this for logging. I use one method multiple times and it would be nice to log the name of the variable that I passed to it. Since I'm passing it byref, I should be able to get this name, right?This would give you the parameter name in the method and it's type, but not the name of the variable that was passed byref.

So I have this weird issue where I set a SqlParameter.DbType field = to a SqlDbType.Decimal, but instead it sets it to a SqlDbType.DateTime. I'm going to include 2 screen shots from the debugger one line after the set statement. As you can see when I hover over (just after the execution of that line), it set the param.DbType to the wrong value. I can only assume that the param.DbType has code that incorrectly changing the type. How can param.DbType become a SqlDbType.DateTime when the varable I'm setting it to is a SqlDbType.Decimal? I'm targeting the .Net Framework 3.5.

I am in vb.net and have a function that will be accessed by multiple threads. Everything inside the function uses local variables. However, each thread will pass in its own dataset by reference. From what I have read the local variables should be no problem, but I think the dataset coming in is a concern. How should I control access / execution of this function to make sure that it is thread safe?

Here is my problem: I developed one application in VB.Net in VS 2008 Express Edition on MS Vista. I published the application and created the installation setup. Now when I install this application on any Vista machine, it runs without any problems, but if I install it on an XP machine, the installation is clean, but when I launch the application, it ends abruptly without any warnings/error just after the splash screen.
Then to investigate further what I did was that I copied the source project from my VS 2008 Express Edition on Vista to an XP machine having full (VS 2008 Team System) version , and when I try to compile it there (XP/VS2008 Full), I get one error in one of the forms resx file. Incidently this is the same form that gets loaded after the splash screen. So I see there is some correlation between my application ending just after the splash screen and failing to compile the main form of the application. The error that I get reads like: "Invalid resx file. The parameter is incorrect Line 1374, position 5."
I have made a Windows Service program called InvCheckService.exe. I am passing the working folder using the Services Property for this program. One of the things that I think is really cool about VB.NET is how built-in functions and subs have extra help text in their ToolTips like "Expression: String expression to search for replace string." as well as the usual "Replace(...parameters...) as string" text. So are the pop up boxes with things like "CompareMethod.Binary" or "CompareMethod.Text." And finally I like how some functions and subs have different sets of parameters for the same routine. For example, New FileStream() starts with either a path (string) parameter or handle parameter, but none of the 15 sets of parameters contain both path and handle parameters. Is there a way that I can set up the classes and functions I write to use these things or do they only work with built in classes and functions? If there is a way, what are the proper names for them so I can look them up in the VS/VB documentation? I would be happy enough if someone would give me an example of them, but it would be nicer if I could go through the documentation and find out if there are other cool things that are related or near by.

I'm very new to vbs scripting and am trying to set a System envinonment variable which will be used by a subsequent cmd file which is called by the VBS script which created the ENV varible.The vbs script creates the varibale correctly but the called CMD file does not find it. I thought a child process inherited its parent env settings. I understand the child can not change the parents env. why the cmd file does not see the variable, am I using the wrong shell command in vbs to call the cmd file or something?Here is the VBS script that simply sets a System varibale and the CMD file below which attempts to log it.on error resume next
