I have written a text editor for an assignment but I am struggling on where to start on this bit. What I Want To Happen:- When the user saves there work I want the name of the file to be shown next to the name of the program at the top left hand side of the form. I am not sure If I just need to create a simple sub routine for adding the name of the file then calling the method in the save as routine.

Is there any Windows API Routine to read something like that?Or could you point me an URL where something is implemented?I don't want a procedure to read the file line by line and comparing them with Line Input because blank spaces, empty lines and comments starting with " // " may appear too, and I don't want to take them into account, but also I need to save changes to the file, but only to the modified section, without having to read the whole file, and re-write it completely.
Binary access can't work, because I don't know what's the size of each "section", since the number of elements into it can change.
I need something like the "ReadINI" Windows API Procedure, but allowing me to read the "[XXX]" sections headers, and also the "<XXX>" file title header.
I have basic text report (.txt) that is created by a custom application. My client would like it to page break at a certain spot.
Does anyone have a routine that would allow me to insert PCL code into the file so that when printed it page breaks? I'd search for certain text and then insert the codes just prior to the text.

This is kind of a brain twister. First, what it involves. I'm writing an application that is working with values sent to and received from an 8 bit micro-controller. There are 8 bits of specified values. Here they are. bit1 = 1, bit2 = 2, bit3 = 4, bit4 = 8, bit5 = 16, bit6 = 32, bit7 = 64 and bit8 = 128.I made a routine that uses 8 checkboxes to add the values for sending them to the micro-controller. That wasn't too hard. In my appp there are 8 checkboxes. Each checkbox assigns one of the specific bit values to a variable (or subtracts it when unchecked). The total of the variable is then displayed in a textbox and ready to send.Now the hard part that ed to take any number between 0 and 255 apart in values that will be a combination of the numbers (1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128) above and show each checkbox which is assigned those numbers to be checked.
View 6 RepliesI am using sockets to send message between computers. I send the messages alright. What I want is when the message "x0x" comes, the client must be closed within 5 minutes. Teh admin can cancel the request by sending message "-xx" as well. The routine that checks for incoming connections and accepts messages uses WHILE TRUE...END WHILE since it must always listen. Once I get a message, I need to fire a timer control or other that fires within 5 minutes. But the program cant leave the WHILE TRUE at all. If i exit it early, the timer fires and the program does get exit. How do I fire the timer or other routine while still the WHILE TRUE routine checks for incomin connections and messages?

I know that the data exists because it displays in the Message Box ( MsgBox("first item = " & ds.Tables(0).Rows(0).Item("NameLast").ToString())) and the executes fine, but for some reason, I can't get the text boxes in LeadsMod2 (Open as MDIChild) to update.
I created an application that when a user logs onto their Windows account, a Form is displayed outlining the current Computer Usage policy set by the insitution and gives the user two options either Agree or Dis-Agree. The two options are in the form of buttons, with events that depending on what the user clicked, will create a log text file at a specified location, with enteries of Date,Time,CurrentUser, and if they agreed or disagreed. If they agreed the application after creating/amending the file will then terminate, otherwise it will update the file and then force Windows to logoff the current user.
Now I made a shortcut of the .exe of the application and placed it in the startup for all users, and yes the application loads at startup for all the users following the procedures mentioned above. The problem I am facing is, that if the current user logs off, or is forced to log off, and another user logs onto Windows, goes through the whole ordeal mentioned above, the application is denied access to the logfile that was created under the previous user, and thus crashes.
So my question is, how can I created a text file using vb 2008 application, that is accessible by multiple Windows users. I have even tried changing the location of the created file to the shared folder, but the end result is the same.
I have a sub routine where I pull in information from a database. I want to use variables from this sub routine in another sub routine. I tried making everything public but it doesn't want to be friendly and share.

The readDB would read the database and set the variables and do whatever it needs to do. Then when they submit the form it would e-mail the form to whatever the email address was.
I am wondering if Global.asa can handle a procedure like this:

The idea is to have a central place to put the routine in instead to copy it into every .vb file that belongs to each .apsx code file.
How can I implement a sub routine or function that does a test for number validation in text fields and then also returns the value of the text fields (if they were valid) back to the main routine?

I have a project for school where I am to create some form of security for an application, our brief was to basically to create and hide a text file in the applications program files (not all that secure really, but heh I don't write the briefs) So I have created the code and form to check that a users security key is valid it all works perfectly in the debugger, it writes the file to the specified directory, however when I run the application on a computer (after deploying it with the correct directories being set up, it never creates the .txt file to write the information created during "Authentication" - I am really confused and I am not sure if this is part of the "problem" I am supposed to be solving for school, or whether this is just some crazy exception that has been thrown up

I have a label that reads a random line from a text file and that string becomes the text for the label.
Now the problem; the label will only work if it is clicked because the event handler is click.What I need is this to work automatically at startup. In other words, it should change the label's text to the random string of the text file on startup of the application.

I have a program i wrote today, it works just as i wanted it to, with exception of one problem. Im more looking for some ideas on this one. For my work, we have folders on a drive that are filled with txt files, what we wanted to do was to add the last date it was modified to the top of the file so people would know when it was last modified. These files are used on CNC machines and the those people cant look at a last modified date as easy as the computer user can, just a short explanation of why we wanted to do this. So i wrote a program to do it, loop through each file in the user selected folder and add a date to the top of it, works perfect. Now here is the issue, when i write the last mod date to that file, the last mod date on the file changes to that day. For example, if i have a file in there that was modified January 28th 2011, the program reads that file, then on the top of the file it prints that date, January 28th 2011, but then that same file gets changed to the current date as a modified date, so if the program i wrote is used again on the same folder the next day, those files will all end up getting the previous days date on the top. I dont want that! I guess im wondering if there is a way to tell the files mod date not to get updated when its run through my program, it should only update when changed some other way, like someone actually opens it, changes stuff and hits the save button.

I am using the OleDbDataReader routine to examine and manipulate Access databases.I am trying to find a procedure for indicating when the end of file is reached.I am getting an error message once the end of file is reached and another record is attempted to be read.The.HasRows modifier does not work; that merely determines if the source database contains rows, not if there are any rows remaining.
