VB Program Doesn't Have Access To Its Own Application Directory When Installed?

Nov 7, 2011

I have a VB project that I created a simple setup project to deploy. It installs fine except for one problem. It crashes because it can't read its own application directory. Included with the program are an xml and schema file that it needs to read when starting.dditionally it may create a log file, also in its application directory. Either of these will return errors under the default install. This was not an issue when running the program in VS and if modify the program to work with another directly like C:Temp. I have a workaround in which I change the permissions of Users group to Full Control for the application directory

Find Installation Directory Of Other Application Installed?

Mar 16, 2011

I have started working on the module based application (plugin based architecture) and client want setup of module that can be run later and added automatically in main application. So, what I am thinking to apply in module setup project is to find the installation directory of main application and then paste dll of module in specific sub-directory.

Is it possible? Is there any other way to add feature in main application later using setup?

Project Using VB And A Database In Access - Check If My Application Requires Access To Be Installed Or Not?

Feb 16, 2012

I'm using VS 2010, and I did a project using VB and a database in Access. The problem is that when I try to put that "application" on other computers, sometimes, is not working. I thought it can be because on these computers they don't have access, but on one computer, is running another app which is using Access and there is no Access installed. How can I check if my application requires Access to be installed or not?

Here is a example of how I did the connection:

Public AccessOLEDBConnString= "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=" & myfullpath & ";Jet OLEDB:Database Password=password"

Function getConnection() As OleDb.OleDbConnection

[CODE]...

And when I want to have access at the data I'm doing like this:

dim conn as Oledb.OledbConnection

dim sql as string

dim ds as Dataset

[CODE]...

DB/Reporting :: Database - Access Denied To A Text File (since It's Stored In The Program Directory In The Program Files)

Sep 20, 2010

I have a program where a lot of the required information for it is stored in text files. I simply read this information into large arrays. However, I don't think it's necessary to load all the information each time. Rather, it would be more efficient if I could simply search through a list of items to find the one I need and then use the data from it, or to find a similar name and use it elsewhere.

Would I be right in using a database? And is database programming done in SQL? I have a book on it telling me to use the SQL Server (IIRC), so I shouldn't be doing it in the VB.NET Express GUI?

Here's an example of what I would do:

Hex = 03 00 => dex number 003
Search in file Pokemon Dex Numbers
003 returns Bulbasaur
Check Bulbasaur base stats in the base stats file
etc

So basically I'm reusing a lot of information. I think a database would be best and it would all be internal right? I'm getting complaints about access denied to a text file (since it's stored in the program directory in the program files).

So to cap up the few questions I have:

-Databases are done in SQL and not inside the GUI?
-Databases would load internally?
-I could search a database without having to load it into like an array or something?

Primary Interop Doesn't Seem To Be Installed ?

Jul 16, 2009

I am using VS 2005 under Windows 2000, and have a requirement to interact with Excel.I figure the easiest way to do this is by using the PIA from microsoft so I can just Import the Excel Interop into my project. So, I got local admin rights and downloaded and installed the PIA. I then found that my version of office was not SP1 so I upgraded to SP3 and then installed the PIA again. However, back in my project I have added a reference to Excel, but I do not see "Interop" under Office, I just see "Core"This means I cannot use : Imports Excel = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Also, when I check references again after restarting, I do not see any Interop references under .NET or COM.Why is it that Interop just doesn't seem to be installed (I see it under Add/Remove programs)

VS 2008 Unauthorized Access Exception When Writing To App Program Files Directory?

Shareware .net Application Packed Using Innosetup, Installed In Different Directories Creates 2 Different Set Of Application

Jul 16, 2010

I have created an shareware application using vb.net visual studio 2008 for windows desktop, and packaged it using innosetup 5.3.8. The problem is when i have installed the application in C:Program FilesApplication and it runs successfully(use trial period of the application), Im also able to install the application once again freshly with the same setup by installing in different directory.eg C:Program FilesApplication new . The application in C:Program FilesApplication new does not have any settings of the already installed one.

Where do i went wrong . Do i need to take care of this in my application(vb.net) or innosetup. How to take care of the already installed path in innosetup or carry the settings of already installed application to newly installed path by upgrading the older one.

I dont want to write any thing in registry because the application does not want any administrative permission requirements. If i install the application in same path it gets updated with the older settings being taken over to this new one and it works fine.

Active Directory Logon Doesn't Work On XP?

Oct 10, 2011

I have some code which queries the AD for a users information. On Windows 7 this works as expected but on XP it returns the error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password

This seems to be across the board on XP machines, except the development was done on XP and tested on a different XP machine and they were fine. I don't have access to these 2 machines anymore so I can't test to see if it still works on them. don't know if it is a problem because of XP or a different reason but all I know is it doesn't work and XP seems to be the common denominator.

The error is thrown at this line:

Dim entry As DirectoryEntry = New DirectoryEntry("LDAP://ldapString", "username", "password")

As I say, this works on 7 but not on XP, it also works when logging in through ADExplorer. What could possibly be the problem?

Detecting If Program Is Installed?

Mar 6, 2012

I currently have a property in my program which returns a true/false depending on if the program is "portable" or not. I need this to know if I should do a certain thing or not.

It checks if it is by checking if the registrykey the installer creates exists, here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\MyProgram
(And under the Wow node if the OS is 64 bit)

The problem is, I am trying to get rid of the need for admin rights, and this is the last function that needs to be fixed. But I don't have a clue on how.
Why I want this property is because then I don't need two separate versions of my program (like a set property in My.Settings which I set before I build).

The only files that differ using the portable vs the installer is one file, but the reason why I don't want to base the result on the existence of that file is because I want to warn the user if it's not there (if the program is not in Portable mode), so he can reinstall the program.

how I can check if the program is installed by an installer, without using admin
