i published an application in vb.net. the user will be able to install the application anywhere they choose on the computer (or perhaps not anywhere they choose but where ever the default location is). how can i programmatically get the location where the user installed the application? another words i need the application to know where it is running from. how do i detect that?

then they run it up again and it comes up.. and then just closes..in reading some stuff online it says its a framework 2.0 sp 1 issue ?these pc's have 3.5, but my program uses all 2.0 stuff..so is this a 2.0 sp level issue ? or should I make my programs start to use framework 3.0 instead ?
I have encounterd a problem when trying to re-enstall a program i have writen in vb 2008.I get the following message:"You cannot start application Shell from this location because it is already installed from a different location."This program is to be used on many workstation computers and i need to be able to update any changes by just reinstalling the program, no uninstalling needed first. If the program was installed from a cd first and needs to be updated from a flash disk this error will be a problem, if the update is from a cd as well then there is no problem.Is there a way to change the installation package to ignore where the program installs from and just update itself?

I have tried publishing a later version but when I try to install it I get the same message. The click-once publisher generally includes an uninstall program with the applications. when Ive had this problem before it was fixed by republishing as a newer version.

View 2 RepliesI am using VS2008 and for the project I am creating, I have a "settings" text file I am using to save user defined settings like color theme, homepage, etcetera. It works fine, however, I am unsure as to how to handle the eventual distributed apps' destination folder/file.
Creating a pre-determined folder/file is easy enough, but what I'd like to do is make it part of the installed folder files, which should be:
I tried creating the file if it wasn't found, however this did not happen (Though I specified the above formatted pathway) perhaps because I was in debug but it should have saved the text file, which it did not and wasn't found anywhere after saving/creating one.
I have the InnoSetup application (Looks great BTW) and see I can include a starting default text file AND make a specific directory for it, but I am unsure as of yet how Inno works exactly, but would prefer testing it through debug before an install anyway. Wish SHOULD be able to be done, am I right?
The odd thing is that although the file was NOT created as specified when creating one, it DID save a setting when I re-ran/debugged the app. (Rather odd, how is this happening I wonder?)

I could simply use a basic path like C:DATAFILES but this wouldn't be very professional, though fine for development purposes.
After I published my application and then installed it to the same computer i used to develop the application, there was an error during the installation, the data source file was not found in the new location set by VBE 2010. How to make sure data source file will be installed at the pre-defined location? so that there will be no installation error.

The problem is when i have installed the application in C:Program FilesApplication and it runs successfully(use trial period of the application), Im also able to install the application once again freshly with the same setup by installing in different directory.eg C:Program FilesApplication new . The application in C:Program FilesApplication new does not have any settings of the already installed one.
Where do i went wrong . Do i need to take care of this in my application(vb.net) or innosetup. How to take care of the already installed path in innosetup or carry the settings of already installed application to newly installed path by upgrading the older one.
I dont want to write any thing in registry because the application does not want any administrative permission requirements.If i install the application in same path it gets updated with the older settings being taken over to this new one and it works fine.

I have updated the source files which includes a SLN, VBP, WIP, MSI and so on, then I tried to use VS2008 to open the SLN file and after Conversion it given me a message "The project for XXX.wip is not installed, please make sure the application for the project (.wip) is installed", Apparently this is not right version to get going on. I have started working on the module based application (plugin based architecture) and client want setup of module that can be run later and added automatically in main application. So, what I am thinking to apply in module setup project is to find the installation directory of main application and then paste dll of module in specific sub-directory.

It looks like it is basically working - I can create a new windows project and add items from the toolbox, edit the code etc. If I open an existing project (created on another box) things load properly but I cannot open any forms in designer view (I can open them in code view). I am trying to deploy an application that uses SMO on a workstation without SQL Server installed on it. The instance the app is connecting to is SQL Server 2008. The application is failing with:Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Replication, Version 10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=89845cdc8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.
The assembly in question is in the same path as my application as well as system32. I am running this on a Windows 7 64 bit box. I have run SQL Native Client, CLR, and SMO MSIs from the 2008 SMO redist download page.This app worked fine when connecting to SQL Server 2005.
I have a quite simple application that is having some random locks up. It's just a few text fields that the user fill it up, 3 sets of Radio buttons, one of them with flags to chose the language and click the PDF button. The application uses iTextsharp to load a PDf template, insert the text into it, depending on the language loads some extra text from a .xml file, and depending on the radio button removes the images from the PDF, closes the pdfstamper and uses [Code] to open the file with whatever PDF application the user have installed and closes itself.
Sounds simple, but after the application is installed in the machine (never in debugging mode) it randomly locks up the application. I tried re-publish the application commenting out the Start(filename) line and the thing stopped locking. And I double checked it, re-publish with the line again and it locked after just a few attempts. [Code]
I have created an application in VB.Net 2010 and am using an Access 2010 db. Connecting to this DB I use the Provider= Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 and it works fine on my machine. This was a recent update from using Jet as that provider was having issues on client Win64 computers that had Access 2007 or 2010 installed.Basically my issue is that I get the error that Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 is not installed when I try to run the application on the client.
The problem however, is that I do not want ask the users to install Data Access Objects in addition to .Net 4.0. I want a simple install that they can run and upgrade to .net 4.0 if they need to. The above thread states a solution as "You can also consider to use ADO.NET object in System.Data.OleDb namespace to connect to the Access database instead of the Provider. In my opinion, this is the best choice since the ADO.NET provides you the powerful data access objects." This sounds like a great option, however I cannot find any way to install the ACE dll and get it to work on the client.what do I need to include in the client installer to get my application to run on systems without Access installed? Do I just include the ACEODB.dll or is there something else that needs to be done?
Do users of windows applications have to have the database application installed if your program uses databases to store information? For example, when making VB2008 programs, if I use the visual studio express database (.sdf), or maybe a MSAccess database, to store information within my visual basic program...when I deploy the application to the users, can they run the program okay even if they don't have MSAccess installed on their computer?Also, do I need to have MSAccess installed in order to write programs that use MSAccess databases?
View 1 RepliesI am running VS 2010 Professional and have a solution with 3 VB projects in it. I can open the forms in 2 of the projects just fine but if I try to open any of the forms in the 3rd project I get a message saying "There is no editor available for .....Form1.vb. Make sure the application for file type (.vb) is installed". Everything was working fine last month and I could open any of the forms.
Again the problem is limited to just the 1 project in the solution.
My Visual Studio 2008 seems to be corrupted. I can not use the Windows Forms designer. I get an error about: "Make sure the application for the file type (.vb) is installed." Also, under menu item Tools>Options, it says "an error occurred loading this property page" when I try to look at the options for 'Data UI Customization' under 'Windows Forms Designer'

I have a VB project that I created a simple setup project to deploy. It installs fine except for one problem. It crashes because it can't read its own application directory. Included with the program are an xml and schema file that it needs to read when starting.dditionally it may create a log file, also in its application directory. Either of these will return errors under the default install. This was not an issue when running the program in VS and if modify the program to work with another directly like C:Temp. I have a workaround in which I change the permissions of Users group to Full Control for the application directory
