VB Program Doesn't Have Access To Its Own Application Directory When Installed?
Nov 7, 2011I have a VB project that I created a simple setup project to deploy. It installs fine except for one problem. It crashes because it can't read its own application directory. Included with the program are an xml and schema file that it needs to read when starting.dditionally it may create a log file, also in its application directory. Either of these will return errors under the default install. This was not an issue when running the program in VS and if modify the program to work with another directly like C:Temp. I have a workaround in which I change the permissions of Users group to Full Control for the application directory

Mar 4, 2012I have recently published a simple text editor(just as an exercise). the editor has been published using Microsoft Visual Basic Express. Once the program is installed i wanted to make it a default opener for .txt files, so i clicked openwith ->Choose default program and then i was asked to show the location of the .exe. It seems like the .exe of my installed program doesn't exist. where the .exe is on a windows7 or tell me of another way of makeing that program the default opener.

I say some because, when my login form works totally fine. Authentication happens.
But once I go into the main application, and open other windows, I start to get these error mesages:

Apr 28, 2012I have a very old plug-in software developed in Visual Basic quite years ago, now its getting time to modify the copyright info. At this point, the issue is now that I was not the author so I don't know anything about it.
I have updated the source files which includes a SLN, VBP, WIP, MSI and so on, then I tried to use VS2008 to open the SLN file and after Conversion it given me a message "The project for XXX.wip is not installed, please make sure the application for the project (.wip) is installed", Apparently this is not right version to get going on. Can everybody tell which VS version can proceed it? or any idea how I do this?

Nov 14, 2005I installed VS 2005 Beta 2 on a WinXP pro system (numerous times). It finally installed without erreors. It looks like it is basically working - I can create a new windows project and add items from the toolbox, edit the code etc. If I open an existing project (created on another box) things load properly but I cannot open any forms in designer view (I can open them in code view). When I attempt to open a form in design view I get the following error popup:=====================There is no editor available for 'c:....myForm.vb'.Make sure the application for the file type (.vb) is installed.

Jan 6, 2011I am running VS 2010 Professional and have a solution with 3 VB projects in it. I can open the forms in 2 of the projects just fine but if I try to open any of the forms in the 3rd project I get a message saying "There is no editor available for .....Form1.vb. Make sure the application for file type (.vb) is installed". Everything was working fine last month and I could open any of the forms.
Again the problem is limited to just the 1 project in the solution.

Aug 7, 2009My Visual Studio 2008 seems to be corrupted. I can not use the Windows Forms designer. I get an error about: "Make sure the application for the file type (.vb) is installed." Also, under menu item Tools>Options, it says "an error occurred loading this property page" when I try to look at the options for 'Data UI Customization' under 'Windows Forms Designer'

Make Website / Project Portable?
Mar 13, 2009I have an ASP.net 3.5 website and I am using vb.net in VWD 2008 Express, I am also using MS SQL Server 2008 Express, I used ajax tabs and a textBox charavters counter control develped by [url]...The database is attached with MS SQL Server Management Studio Express and the files are stored in the SQL default "Data" folder.
The whole project's code and forms are stored in a folder in my E drive.I need to hand the whole project to another coworker who have to finish it, please describe in steps how can i make my website portable (like i can put it all in a folder that he can carry around in his flash disk).

The only way that i have thought of doing this is creating an application, grabbing it out of /bin and it would save settings in a xml file or text document/whatever.

Jun 9, 2011I have a simple app (coded in VB 2008 Express Edition) that uses an SQL Server database (in .mdf format) that works fine on my own machine. I created the database in SQL Server on this machine. I added the DB as a data source and it works fine. But when packaged this app (ClickOnce) and installed this app on a different machine the installer tries to download MS SQL Server Express. Obviously this is because SQL Server is a prerequisite and is not installed on the other machine. But just as obvious is the fact that the download will take a long time to complete before my code even starts installing.
My question is this: Is there an SQL Server reference (using Add Reference...) that I can add to avoid this? I suspect the application just needs one or two DLL files from SQL Server. Downloading the whole product seems like overkill. Is there a way I can included the needed files in my app to avoid this long download process?

Jul 16, 2009I am using VS 2005 under Windows 2000, and have a requirement to interact with Excel.I figure the easiest way to do this is by using the PIA from microsoft so I can just Import the Excel Interop into my project.So, I got local admin rights and downloaded and installed the PIA. I then found that my version of office was not SP1 so I upgraded to SP3 and then installed the PIA again.However, back in my project I have added a reference to Excel, but I do not see "Interop" under Office, I just see "Core"This means I cannot use : Imports Excel = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Also, when I check references again after restarting, I do not see any Interop references under .NET or COM.Why is it that Interop just doesn't seem to be installed (I see it under Add/Remove programs)

This occurs when I try to open the designer view of the form.This problem does not exist in new programs (ones created after the upgrade).I am at a loss to explain this.

Shareware .net Application Packed Using Innosetup, Installed In Different Directories Creates 2 Different Set Of Application
Jul 16, 2010I have created an shareware application using vb.net visual studio 2008 for windows desktop, and packaged it using innosetup 5.3.8. The problem is when i have installed the application in C:Program FilesApplication and it runs successfully(use trial period of the application), Im also able to install the application once again freshly with the same setup by installing in different directory.eg C:Program FilesApplication new . The application in C:Program FilesApplication new does not have any settings of the already installed one.
Where do i went wrong . Do i need to take care of this in my application(vb.net) or innosetup. How to take care of the already installed path in innosetup or carry the settings of already installed application to newly installed path by upgrading the older one.
I dont want to write any thing in registry because the application does not want any administrative permission requirements.If i install the application in same path it gets updated with the older settings being taken over to this new one and it works fine.

I have tried publishing a later version but when I try to install it I get the same message. The click-once publisher generally includes an uninstall program with the applications. when Ive had this problem before it was fixed by republishing as a newer version.
