VS 2008 : Making A Large Form That Spans Two Monitors?

Apr 27, 2010

I have a button that will run a video file in the Windows media player box, first up, is there a way for that video to display full screen on a secondary monitor? My plan was to have a large form that spread across the two screens with the control buttons on one side and the video on the other, is there an easier way to do this? Otherwise I think I might have to look at making an individual form for each screen and then somehow getting the buttons on say form1 to do the work on form2. Again is this hard to do?

VS 2008 Form KeyPreview On Many Forms Of Large Application

Apr 11, 2012

As quick solution to the user wanting to be able to open a particular form from any other form (in a large application with many forms, not an MDI app), I added KeyPreview to each form and corresponding KeyPress event so that said form will open (ShowDialog) upon pressing F12 from all these other forms.

Since this update has been in place, the user has been getting intermittent (maybe 2 or 3 within the course of a workday) but nasty errors such as "exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" and the dreaded "out of memory". Is there reason to believe (off the top of your head) that the KeyPreview could be causing this?

VS 2008 Multiple Monitors - Detect And Save Configuration

Oct 24, 2011

New to these forums but have been a lurker for a while. I searched through some "multiple monitors" threads but didn't find anything that fit my current issue, so I figured I'd pose it in a new thread. We have users with 4 monitor setups that are very particular about their screen settings. When we have to replace a PC for whatever reason, it is always a hassle getting their screen configurations the way they were prior to the switch. Is it possible to create a small VB app that will scan their current configuration, save a "settings" file, and re-apply the settings on the new PC? What I mean by configuration is screen resolution, setting the primary monitor, etc. Theoretically this sounds like it can be done, but I wanted some opinions on it.

VS 2008 Changing Computer Monitor Size Of Multiple Monitors?

Jun 28, 2010

Now this program will only be used on systems that I produce, and send out. I need to make sure that for any monitor that these people use it will always be at the standard resolution of 1440 x 900..

I have tried setting up profiles with catalyst control panel, but if you plug in a different monitor to the one that was plugged in when you made the profile it wont recognise the screen and the system wont run properly.

So I wanna see if I can change the resolutions of the screen that will be plugged in the monitor slot and also if possible make sure the other extended screen should there resolution of 1024 x 768..how much control can you get over the monitors that are plugged in?

VS 2008 Hidden Dlls - Security Program That Monitors The Keystokeswebsitesprocesses

Dec 30, 2009

I have created a security program that monitors the keystokeswebsitesprocesses... I want to FIRST ask if this is a legal question; for, my purpose in this program is security reasons (eg. following up on employees to make sure that they are doing what they are paid to do. They all know this is running, and have been warned not to go to sites and enter information they do not want reviewed).

Second, I want this program to be hidden so that techy persons cannot go into task manager and end the process, then go on to some porn site! How could I make this app hidden, or at the very least make it 'un-end-able' from the task manager?

.net - Filtering SQL By Correct Time Spans?

Feb 23, 2010

I have a table that has two time columns. One is a login time one is a logout time. I would like to be able to filter between the two, basically greater than the minimum selected and less than the maximum selected. I am using a monthly calendar to get me the spans of time but it is not working correctly. From there I would like to add the 4 columns in the table to a gridview. The date in the DB is the in following format:

2/23/2010 11:17:01 AM

I know how to get single elements from the table, or a column but not entire rows.

So i guess I have 2 problems, getting the filter for the SQL correct then binding the results to a table.

Here is my code so far:

Dim cn As OleDbConnection
Dim cmd As OleDbCommand
Dim str As String

[Code]....

SLaks has answered most of my question, one problem remains. I need to figure out how to make it so the monthcalendar can select just one day and return that days values. Seems like the time is an issue since it is in the DB as stated above. Just comparing the dates is not enough.

How To Measure Time Spans Accurately

Aug 9, 2011

I have a VB.NET application that executes a test when the user clicks a "Start" button. The application communicates back and forth with a USB device and eventually stops when the USB device sends back a specific trigger, or if the user chooses to cancel the test. I would like to measure the time elapsed during each test and display it to the screen. The program is significantly complex and I have several timers that control sampling rate, the frequency of the output, the frequency of signals in a calibration method, etc.I tried two approaches so far, both of which led to invalid time measurements. I say they're invalid because I used several stopwatches I know to be accurate in addition to the system clock (the clock with a second hand that pops up when you double click the time in the bottom right hand corner of Windows XP) to measure the actual time of each test. Consistently, my program will indicate more time has passed than actually has.I tried simply dividing the number of samples I took by the the sampling frequency. I got back a time that was about 1.33 times greater than the actual time. This ratio would change with different frequencies, and even with the same frequency from day to day.

I tried using the DateTimePicker in my main form to measure the time passage. At the start of the test I'd record the start time, startTime = DateAndTimePicker1.value, at the end of the test I'd record the end time, endTime = DateAndTimePicker1.value, and then I'd set the text of a label equal to their difference, TestDurationLabel.text = (endTime - startTime).ToString. I initialized startTime and endTime as Dates. I get back a time that is about 1.2 times greater than the actual time.

VS 2008 : Making 'main Window' Form Acting As A Container For The Other Forms?

Mar 17, 2009

Am devloping an application with multiple forms, which reside on top of a main form. i.e the main application window. The 'child' forms do not need to be linked in any way as they do not pass information to the parent form, as all the parent form does is act as main window. Now I would like to know what is the correct way for the 'main window' form acting as a container for the other forms? So that all the smaller secondary forms stay focused on top of the main application form, that when the main window is minimized, so these forms should do also etc..

I have read other posts and they mention, leaving all the forms standard i.e. IsMdiContainer = False and then using form.showDialog() to call the secondary forms. This did not work for me as what happens is that as soon as I give focus to the main app form, the secondary form disappears underneath.I tired making the main app form IsMdiContainer = True and when it loads calling:

frmMemberForm.MdiParent = Me

Now this works, because I can click off the form and minimize the app etc and the frmMemberForm doesn't disappear. However if i close the MemberForm and reopen it, it looses this property and once again when it looses focus, it will disappear.

VS 2008 - Timer - Project A References Project B So Can Open A Large Form In Project B

May 5, 2010

For reasons that are beyond my control, I have three Projects. Projects A and B reference project C. Project A references project B so that it can open a large form in project B. I now need to open that large form from project C, but VB won't allow me to add a reference from C to B because that would create a circular dependency. I found a way around it, though. I created a Timer in A, and when I opened C from A, I passed in that timer. When the user performs a certain action, I enable the Timer from A, and this causes C to open B for me.

Large Multidimensial Array - Write A Program To Do Markov Chain But States Are Quite Large

Closing Form After Large XML File Is Opened?

Oct 21, 2011

I'm working through an example in a programming book and stumbling across a problem that I can't seem to figure out. The program in question is basically a very basic 'level viewer' for a tile based bitmap game (its a game creation book). The source code from the author was written for Visual Studio 2005, and I am using 2010. The source code imports fine and the program runs correctly.

I built the same program on my own, starting from scratch in VS2010. The program works like this: It opens a tile set palette (bitmap form), then uses an XML file to create a 'level'. The XML file indicates which tile goes where on the 'level'. The XML file is roughly 1.9MB and has roughly16,000 entries (the program creates a level that is 4096 x 4096 pixels using 32 x 32 pixel tiles).

Running and closing the program from source code runs exactly as expected. Running the program from my version runs exactly as expected. Closing it does not. It basically hangs up for about 2 minutes on close. (for reference every loads in about 3 seconds). I've determined that it is the XML file that is causing the problem by excluding the portion where it loads the XML. In that case it closes fine. If I cut it down to just a few records, my program closes fine as well. So it seems like the program is having trouble dumping the XML document at close.

I've tried to track down any differences between the source code and my code, and the only thing that I have found is that the References in mine are all using .NET version 4.0 and the references in the source are using mostly 2.0 and some 3.5 (System.Data.DataSetExtensions, System.XML.Ling.dll, and System.Core.dll)

The code for the entire form is:

Imports System.Xml
Public Class Form1
Public Structure tilemapStruct

[Code].....

Scrollable Display Of Extremely Large Image On A Form

Aug 11, 2009

I am an experienced programmer but mainly in 4GLs and assembly. Relatively new to VB programming, especially GUI applications. On a form I need to create an area that will be used to display *extremely* large TIFF images. typical image size would be 2000 pixels by 100,000 pixels. Typically I will NOT want to display the entire image at once, so the area will need to have scroll bars and/or other methods to scroll/pan around the image.

I have read about and tinkered with the bitmap and picturebox objects, including some threads about several different ways to implement scrollbars. However, I see that the picturebox size is limited to 32K pixels in both dimensions. I suppose that I might be able to copy various portions of the bitmap to the picturebox depending on scroll position, but that seems potentially quite slow and cumbersome. Can an expert developer who is experienced with these types of issues regarding the following:

1. Can bitmap objects be used effectively with TIFF images of the size I am working with?

2. an approach that should produce reasonable scrolling performance for these extremely large images without excessive coding effort?

3. For an image that exceeds the picturebox size when displayed at 1:1 scale, is the picturebox capable of displaying a reduced size version of such an image without lots of code, and if so, how?

4. Many (most?) graphics display objects count on all of their display data being stored in memory rather than on disk. Would that be true of a TIFF image loaded into a bitmap object and displayed via a picturebox? If so, the amount of RAM required in order to buffer the entire image in memory could be a potential problem for images of this size. Is there an advisable way to have the picturebox or other display object only load portions of the image into memory on an as needed basis, and purge them once they are no longer required? Are there any built in objects/methods/properties or is there any sample code to show how to do this?

Slow Form Load (has Large Number Of Controls)

Nov 9, 2010

I wrote last week about a problem with an MDI program that had a large number of forms (each with a large number of controls on it) that was "sluggish" in loading and in switching between the child forms.I've attached an example program in VS2008 (though the actual app is VB2010)Rather than show the hardware control application with all of the text fields, and picture boxes acting as indicators, I made a simple program to show the point. This is exaggerated as this just loads 2000 or so text boxes on a form. In the real app I have ~ 200 assorted controls per form of picture boxes, scroll bars, text boxes, labels etc. Also, there is a large full screen .jpeg as the back ground of each form. All are generated at run time and are placed on the form in the New call of each form. (as in the sample attached)main issue seems to be the methodology I use to switch between child forms. I make the current form .visible = false, and the next.visible = true. I have used this as it "keeps the place" on each page if the user has scrolled or is looking at one section of the form. When the next form .visible = true happens I see the controls added in a "machine gun" fashion instead of all at once.
