I have a quick question regarding the serial port and timer tick event. Basically i have a micro processor connected to the PC via the serial port. With a baurd rate of 38400 set.When the PC sends the micro ":K + VBCRLF" the micro response with a string of information (ASCII encoded) and delimited with a "," and at the end of the transmission a cartridge return line feed is added.Example of sent string:
"12,1134,123,545,76,6868,34,232,1,2,3,6,7,8" These numbers are then split using the VB mystring.split(",") function into an array of strings, then the numbers are converted using ctype. After which my UI is then updated.I have Witten the code in a tick timer event using a timer count of 300ms. Although the program runs and the UI is updated i end it with lots of exception errors. I think allot of this is down to the serial port either timing out or not reading complete string.Or possibly the timer has not executed all the code before another tick event happens Even after adding a few try catch statements i am still having problems. Can anybody suggest a better way of doing it?I was thinking of using a do while loop and at the end a sleep function instead of the timer tick event.I need the speed as i am trying to read and display live data.

May 6, 2010I have a datagridview bound to an Access datatable. It is nothing more than a one column list of chemicals. To allow the user to more easily navigate the list, if they press a letter it will jump to the first chemical alphabetically of that letter. If they keep tapping that same letter it will move down that list one by one. This all works fine. The problem is if you hold down the letter it will progress down the list but it doesn't show that progression. I want it to function much like if you hold down the down arrow key in a datable you'll see each successive cell be selected as it goes down the column.

Apr 1, 2010I need some help to understand my options to get this working. I try to update a textbox control by a property-changed event from a class variable. I've digged around for a day and have a vague understanding that this can be solved in three ways:
1. Using some "if InvokeRequired", "Invoke" code in the handler method
2. By programming a special delegate class for this variable
3. By using a databinding directly linking the control (textbox) to the class event
Now.. Are these options correct? And would it be possible to get some help to show these three solutions in actual code (relevant to mine)? I can't seem to manage to sort all the information to a working code. Also, what are the pros and cons of the different solutions?
As my code stands now, it's obviously none of the above, as it gives a cross-thread error, as indicated.

Apr 14, 2009I have a "partial" class in VB.NET. Half of it is auto generated by a code generation tool. That half implements INotifyPropertyChanged, so any properties in that part of the partial class raise the PropertyChanged event.In my "custom" part of the class, I declare another property that depends on one of the properties in the auto-generated side. Therefore, when that auto-generated property changes, I also want to raise a PropertyChanged event on my custom property that depends on it.
If I go into the generated part of the class and raise the event there, that will get overwritten if I ever re-generate that part, so I don't want to do that. I would rather add an event handler in my side of the partial class that checks if the generated property changed, and if so, raise another event for my custom property.

I'm assuming it's because normally you'd use the WithEvents keyword to tell the compiler that you're subscribing to events from that object. I don't have a clue how to do this inside of the class that's actually raising the event, or if that's even possible.

Jan 7, 2009As it stands, when I click a button to load the data the application lags and looks as though it has locked up although it has not. There are a lot (10,000) of records to load in some cases.
I thought I could just change my status strip text to dispay "Loading database" while it's loading.
So, I raise an event (dbloading) in the "load db" button.click event before calling the procedure to load the data. When that event is raised, I change the status strip text.... but it does not work.

Use Of BindingNavigator To Display Data (VB 2008)?
Jan 17, 2009I need to use the BindingNavigator to cycle thru the records of one of the tables in an Access database. The table has 5 text fields and 3 image fields. On a form I have placed 5 TextBoxes and 3 PictureBoxes. I included a BindingSource control and BindingNavigator control and configured them. This automatically generated the TableAdapter, BindingSource and Dataset. I then manually bound each TextBox and PictureBox using the DataBindings area in each of their Properties. I can run the program and display the records, but only the Text fields show anything. The images are not displayed in the PictureBoxes.

The issue is, those procedures use values from the Form controls. So the class doesn't recognise them as initialised.What's the best solution for this?I think I could pass the object itself as a parameter but doing it on each call seems a bitredundant and it thickens the code.Is there any way to access the Form1 controls and objects directly from the myTextBox.vb class?

VS 2008 - Class Module Gets Data Entry From Form
Dec 16, 2010I've been coding a Windows applicaton for the past seven months but there aren't a lot of "windows" in the application so I have a question on getting and returning data from forms. I display a form and the user makes a listbox selection then presses Ok. Normally I can proceed from there (in a class module) with values from the config file, but sometimes his selection will require me to ask for more information. So I want the class to display a form, pass control to it, then when the user hits OK on this form, return to the class. What is happening is the class continues with all its inline code and function calls and doesn't show the form until the end of its current function.

AddHandler PeopleBindingSource.CurrentChanged, AddressOf ChangeHandler then on the ChangeHandler Sub I populate an HTML report. However I don't think this is the best event to handle this. I have to datepickers on my forma as well. So say I click on a row in my dgv, that persons report loads. Then I change the start date on my datepicker,
Now i want to click on that row again to refresh the data, but since the currentchanged event doesn't fire the data won't refresh. I have to click on another row then click on the row I want to view in order for the event to fire. which event is best to do this?
