VS 2010 - Add Controls/components (such As Performance Counters, Timers, Etc.)?

Oct 25, 2011

Which is less resource-intensive (per se):

> Add controls/components (such as Performance Counters, Timers, etc.) to a project by dragging them onto the form and using them by setting the properties and using code to program what they do.

> Add controls/components (such as Performance Counters, Timers, etc.) to a project by using Dim x As New Performance Counter or Dim y As New Timer in code without actually dragging them from the Toolbox onto the bar at the bottom (under the Form Design).Or is there another way to do this that uses less CPU/RAM/Resources/etc.?

I am trying to setup performance counters for CPU Usage and Memory Used.I would like a progress bar and a label to display the percentage.I have the below code and although it seems to be half working, there is something just not right.. The memory one seems to be working fine although the CPU one is acting strange.

Shared perfTotalMemory As New ComputerInfo
Shared perfFreeMemory As New PerformanceCounter("Memory", "Available MBytes")
Shared perfProcessorTime As New PerformanceCounter("Processor", "% Processor Time", "_Total")

Initializing Performance Counters In Array

Jun 23, 2011

My first try was to init performance counters in an array, which didnt work. Then I read up on performance counters and from that reading, the constructors are such that performance counters cannot be put in arrays. What does one do for multiprocessing?

Performance Counters Incrementing Improperly Into Application?

Jul 23, 2009

I'm trying to weave a .NET performance counter into an application. When I call the incrementBy(value) method on my avg performance counter it is changing the RawValue of my base counter by value as well. I checked the variable names and think everything is correct. Then when I call increment() on my base counter it adds 1 to the rawvalue of the avgcounter as well as incrementing the base counter... adding insult to injury!

In code I'm using two different counters to measure the time a merge sort I wrote takes. I have a instantaneous counter for the elapsed time of the sort and an average counter.
Dim timePiece As New Stopwatch()
timePiece.Start()
MergeSort()
timePiece.Stop()
[Code] .....

I think I may be using the counters wrong, but why does changing the rawvalue of the average seem to also change the rawvalue of the base? i dont think that's supposed to happen.

VS 2008 Kernel Memory - Getting Information From OS By Using Performance Counters

Jan 21, 2010

I've been trying to get memory information from the OS by using Performance Counters. Memory performance information is available from the memory manager through the system performance counters. Right now, I'm working on getting the different types of Kernel Memory, but I'm having issues getting others as well. Through Performance Counters, I've been able to get Paged Virtual and Nonpaged Kernel memory.

The article I mentioned above does not explain how to get the Paged Physical Kernel Memory. It only gives the two I mentioned and the total, which is just the two combine and isn't the Paged Physical. The information isn't straight forward, so I'm using a third party application to compare my results so that I get the correct information. The article gives me Pool Paged Bytes Kernel memory and I found out that it is the Paged Virtual Memory.

I'm declaring this and others like so: [Code] I've researched several other methods, but I can't seem to get anywhere with anything else besides Performance Counters. To sum it up, I'm looking for a method to obtain the Paged Physical Kernel Memory.

VS 2010 Copy Controls And Components

Jan 9, 2012

I would like to create a new form within my project that is identical in terms of the controls and components of one of my existing forms. The difference will be in the code where I will change some constants.

Is there a way to copy the controls and components(text boxes...) so that I don't have to use the design mode to create the form again?

I've tried copying the code of the original form and pasting it into the new form, however it only pastes the code and not the actual buttons and texts boxes.

IDE :: Form Components In Controls Magically Resizing

May 31, 2011

I have a development system and two test systems. My development system is Windows 7 (64 bit). My two test systems are Windows XP (x86) and Windows 7 (x86). I have created a program on the development system mostly in VB.NET 2008 and deployed it. It looks nice on the development system and on my Windows XP system, but when executing the software on my Windows 7 (x86) system, all the form sizes and components somehow grow. To investigate the issue, I moved over the entire project and opened it on the Windows 7 (x86) system to find that the sizes have somehow changed in the designer there as well. I opened up the .Designer.vb files and the sizes there all seem correct. Then I go to the IDE and the sizes are larger than they should be. For example, I will set a form size to 532, 217 on my development PC then it will show up as 709, 267 on the test system. I tried putting in code on my form.load event to set the size to 532, 217 then re-deployed it, but again, it executes and the form is too large.

VS 2010 LOTS Of Timers?

Jul 12, 2010

I'm considering making an application that will perform various tests against servers on a local network - for example pinging them, checking hard drive space, checking the state of services, whether or not databases are available, etc etc. Very similar to Hostmonitor if anyone has ever used that - but my app will be free

These tests would have to be performed at specified intervals, but the problem is that there could be literally hundreds of tests and I'm not sure how well my app would cope with hundreds of timers running... especially if they are all configured to run every minute or two (they all need to run independently of each other).

Really I'm just wondering how you guys would design such a system.The best way I can think of is to have a separate timer associated with every test and then when a test's timer has elapsed use the ThreadPool to do the work that the test will perform. That way if loads of them happen to run at the same time then the ThreadPool will queue them rather than trying to run say 200 at once. I also think I would need to have some kind of staging for when the app first starts, so that every single test is not going to have the exact same time to run (well, every test that has the same interval configured), but that shouldn't be too much of an issue.I guess it would be a good idea to try and use some sort of grouping so that more than one test can use the same timer - like if 20 tests were set to run with a 5 minute interval then I could use one timer and run all of the tests when that one timer fires.

VS 2010 Two Timers Running At Same Time

Apr 10, 2012

I'm creating a 2D RPG game, the character moves by pressing the keys A (left) and D (right), this activates a timer that increments the x.position of the character by 1 pixel in case you press D, or decrements if you press A. The movement of the main character is always perfect and smooth and this is how I want to do it, but when I add other character and I animate them using the same method, they dont have a smooth movement, but if I press A or D these characters regain a smooth movement, so, basicly, the second timer (which is always enabled) only increments a value smoothly if the 1st timer (not enabled) is activated.

VS 2010 Two Timers Running Parallel To Each Other?

Oct 26, 2011

I want to expand it a little bit and add a second timer that runs parallel to the first timer, but is not affected in any way shape or form by the first timer.

I want the timers to run like this:

Time Timer1 Timer2
0 X X
1 X
2 X
3 X
4 X
5 X X
6 X
7 X
8 X
9 X
10 X X

Ive tried nesting the second loop in the first loop but the second loop takes 3 seconds to complete, so I found that it froze the first loop till the second loop finishes. I was reading about system threading (System.Timers.Timer) and it seems like that is the route I want to go.

I wrote this quick as an example:

This assumes that I added a windows timer control as timer1

vb

Option Strict On
Imports System
Imports System.Timers

VS 2010 - Cannot Remove Components With Uninstall

Jul 15, 2010

I don't know what's got into them but they decided to purchase vs2010 pro licenses in my company. Anyway i gave it a quick look and since i don't need to have it installed right now (service pack 1 first, Microsoft anti-bug law) i uninstalled it. The problem i see is that it leaves leftovers everywhere.C++ redist, ado components, sql r2 components etc. These will not be deleted if i just remove vs2010 but will be installed if i install vs2010 full.Anyway i ended up removing them one by one and it took about 30-45 minutes. So has anyone have done a removal? Is this the case? I cannot remove most of the components with one big uninstall?

VS 2010 Using A Drop Down Box To Hide And Show Different Components?

May 28, 2011

I've been trying to work out away off using a drop down box to hide and show different components, on top of one another, within panels using this

Private Sub ComboBox1_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ComboBox1.SelectedIndexChanged
If ComboBox1.Text = "Panel 2" Then
Panel1.Visible = False

[code]....

However this only works as wanted when the panels are separate from one another (one above, one below) but I want them to be on top of each other so I can switch between them. Essentially I want two forms within a form.Second question; I have an equation I wish to implement in my code (N = N0*e^-a*b) does vb have a way of calculating exponentials and logs? (Ie: log(a/b))

VS 2005 Dynamically Add Counters

Mar 18, 2009

I'm looking to list all available performance counters (on a server) in my app and allow the user to select what he/she wishes to monitor. Then when they have been selected, hit a button, and the counters will start monitoring.

From using Google so far I can monitor one counter but I'm looking to monitor several user-selected counters. I guess in short I might be looking to re-hash perfmon. Would I need an array or a Microsoft.VisualBasic.Collection?

Microsoft's VB 2010 - Add Required Components And Click On Button - App Simply Disappears, Closes Goes Right Back Into A Stopped State

Dec 11, 2010

I'm using the following code

' Visual Basic
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, _
ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

[CODE]..........

Its straight off the Microsoft site found here: [URL]

When I add the required components and click on the button, my app simply disappears, closes, goes right back into a stopped state. No errors, No Warnings, No issues. Nothing. Its as-if there is a stray "END" just before the IF statement. (But there isn't) Its stopping right at the IF statement. My app (THEIR CODE) just makes it disappear and "Stop". The code was working about an hour ago, but now nothing, and thats the only code on the project.
