VS 2010 Two Timers Running Parallel To Each Other?

Oct 26, 2011

I want to expand it a little bit and add a second timer that runs parallel to the first timer, but is not affected in any way shape or form by the first timer.

I want the timers to run like this:

Time Timer1 Timer2
0 X X
1 X
2 X
3 X
4 X
5 X X
6 X
7 X
8 X
9 X
10 X X

Ive tried nesting the second loop in the first loop but the second loop takes 3 seconds to complete, so I found that it froze the first loop till the second loop finishes. I was reading about system threading (System.Timers.Timer) and it seems like that is the route I want to go.

I wrote this quick as an example:

This assumes that I added a windows timer control as timer1

vb

Option Strict On
Imports System
Imports System.Timers

VS 2010 Two Timers Running At Same Time

Apr 10, 2012

I'm creating a 2D RPG game, the character moves by pressing the keys A (left) and D (right), this activates a timer that increments the x.position of the character by 1 pixel in case you press D, or decrements if you press A. The movement of the main character is always perfect and smooth and this is how I want to do it, but when I add other character and I animate them using the same method, they dont have a smooth movement, but if I press A or D these characters regain a smooth movement, so, basicly, the second timer (which is always enabled) only increments a value smoothly if the 1st timer (not enabled) is activated.

I want to expand it a little bit and add a second timer that runs parallel to the first timer, but is not affected in any way shape or form by the first timer.

Ive tried nesting the second loop in the first loop but the second loop takes 3 seconds to complete (I use thread.sleep(3000)), so I found that it froze the first loop till the second loop finishes. I was reading about system threading (System.Timers.Timer) and it seems like that is the route I want to go.

I wrote this quick as an example:

I cant use the timer1 to set off the second round of events because of the thread.sleep. I was hoping that the code above puts the second thread to sleep while the windows.form.timer continues on ticking every 1000 ms

Parallel. For Termination - Service That Scans Network Folders Using A Parallel.for Method

Jan 16, 2012

I have a service that scans network folders using a parallel.for method. However recently I am finding if I stop the service then while windows says the service is stopped the process is still running in task manager. However it is at 0 cpu and the memory does not change. If I try and end the task (even a force in command prompt) it just says access denied and i have to reboot the server. What would be the best way to make sure everything terminates? I thought of adding a global Boolean that in the stop procedure it turns true and part of my parallel code will check for that and call s.stop.

VS 2010 LOTS Of Timers?

Jul 12, 2010

I'm considering making an application that will perform various tests against servers on a local network - for example pinging them, checking hard drive space, checking the state of services, whether or not databases are available, etc etc. Very similar to Hostmonitor if anyone has ever used that - but my app will be free

These tests would have to be performed at specified intervals, but the problem is that there could be literally hundreds of tests and I'm not sure how well my app would cope with hundreds of timers running... especially if they are all configured to run every minute or two (they all need to run independently of each other).

Really I'm just wondering how you guys would design such a system. The best way I can think of is to have a separate timer associated with every test and then when a test's timer has elapsed use the ThreadPool to do the work that the test will perform. That way if loads of them happen to run at the same time then the ThreadPool will queue them rather than trying to run say 200 at once. I also think I would need to have some kind of staging for when the app first starts, so that every single test is not going to have the exact same time to run (well, every test that has the same interval configured), but that shouldn't be too much of an issue.I guess it would be a good idea to try and use some sort of grouping so that more than one test can use the same timer - like if 20 tests were set to run with a 5 minute interval then I could use one timer and run all of the tests when that one timer fires.

VS 2010 Acessing Parallel Port?

Jun 18, 2012

I've been trying to this application in Visual Studio 2010 to only write to the parallel port, so supposedly it would be a very easy task, and by all the tutorials in the internet i've seen before it really is! Although it throws me always the same error which is too generic and don't give enough information for me to solve it. I'm doing this using the "Inpout32.dll" library to make the communication between VB.NET and the port..

VS 2010 Parallel Loop Getting Bad Data?

Jan 25, 2011

I've been trying to get this method to run parallel so it can take full advantage of all processors, and it seems like the data is running over itself. I didn't originally write it, so I'm having a hard time figuring out where it's running over itself when it runs parallel. It gets good data when it runs in a regular For loop.

Parallel.For(1, endm, Sub(m)
'Debug.Print("Top of loop: " & Now)
For p = 1 To rowend

VS 2010 - Add Controls/components (such As Performance Counters, Timers, Etc.)?

Oct 25, 2011

Which is less resource-intensive (per se):

> Add controls/components (such as Performance Counters, Timers, etc.) to a project by dragging them onto the form and using them by setting the properties and using code to program what they do.

> Add controls/components (such as Performance Counters, Timers, etc.) to a project by using Dim x As New Performance Counter or Dim y As New Timer in code without actually dragging them from the Toolbox onto the bar at the bottom (under the Form Design).Or is there another way to do this that uses less CPU/RAM/Resources/etc.?

VS 2010 - Sequential For Each Being Executed Faster Than Parallel

Feb 6, 2011

Suppose you have an array with 10.000.000 elements filled with values between 1 and 10, and you need to count how many fives it contains, something like:

Dim RandList As New List(Of Integer)
Dim r As New Random
Dim Counter As Integer = 0
For i As Integer = 1 To 10000000
RandList.Add(r.Next(1, 10))
[Code] .....

Here I got 2 problems, both versions are returning different values at each call with the same array, and the sequential ForEach is being executed much more faster than the parallel.

VS 2010 Writing To Parallel Port / Windows 7 64-bit

Mar 11, 2011

Does anyone have experience writing data to the parallel port (printer port) in Windows 7 64-bit. I have been trying inpout32.dll, inpoutx64.dll and following all the info on http://www.highrez.co.uk/ and www.logix4u.net but can't get anything to work. I have an on-board parallel port at &H378 - not an add-on card - and have tried various modes in the BIOS (standard, ECP etc). I have a background in electronics so I am confident my testing methods are sound; I just cannot get a data bit to change state under program control. I need to send data to an 8-bit port on some 20th Century electronics so serial/USB interfaces are not really an option. There must be a way to control those 8 data bits in Windows 7, mustn't there?

VS 2010 Running A Cmd File Within VB?

Aug 15, 2011

im v ery new to VB, im designing a game launcher within VB and everything is very simply done. I have 4 buttons currently, 3 of them link to websites and work a charm, but what i need is a 4th button to launch a game via a .cmd file. I tried by using simple commands like:

Shell("C:Program Files (x86)NCsoftAtomixatomix.cmd")and Process.Start("C:Program Files (x86)NCsoftAtomixatomix.cmd")

Both of these options worked in executing the .cmd but it caused an error within it. The cmd works perfectly fine when executed manually from its directory but when i try and execute it via the launcher i get an error.

Just tried it with a .bat file also getting the same issue of not being able to find the bin32

VS 2010 : Use Controls While A Loop Is Running?

Oct 4, 2011

Basically what I have are two loops, one inside the other, that will run until the given condition is met. Exactly what I want. My problem is that I want to be able to use the controls, like buttons, while a loop is going on.

I originally did not think of this until I had built this part of my program, what I want to know is if there is a way to use controls while a loop is going on or if their is an alternative.

1)I know timers can be used to meet these goals, but they did not work out as I had hoped and using two timers (1 to represent each loop) I do not believe is efficient.

2)I have considered using recursion, but have found this may not be very efficient either and am not quite sure if this will do what I want.

These loops run as long as the number the user inputted. So it could theoretically run for 100,000+ times. I am not looking for speed, but it would be good if there were a faster method that allowed me to use controls while it loops.
