Walkthrough: Adding A Local Database Cache To An N-Tier Application?
Nov 5, 2009
I have followed this walkthough at http:[url]...but I am having problems working out how to save changes to the Local Database Cache so that I can use the bidirectional sync. This walkthough does not provide the code to save local changes,I have added the line of code for the bidirectional sync and it works if you drag datasources direct onto the form from the XSD but this uses the component TableAdapterManager and the method UpdateALL which I cannot see how to implement in this Walkthough ?how I change the local Database Cache and update back to server in this walkthrough ?

I'm creating an occasionally connected application with a local (client) .sdf data cache. I added a new table to my server database and want to include this table in my local data cache and synchronization. Is there an easy way to do this?

Im trying to build my first N-Tier web application. And it seems like im doing it wrong. Ive been kinda working out of this book, but to me it doesnt seem like the right way to do this. In the book the guy builds User and Data centric objects but everywhere I see ntier everyone is always talking about BLL and DAL ive seen nothign on UC and DC objects.Right now I have Interfaces and serializable structures, user and data centric objects. The data centric object does all the validation and connecting to the db, as well as returns any violated rules, but when I once i started pulling it all together it just doesnt seem right.Ive already wrote a ____ load of code and now am kinda stuck. I dont know if i am doing this right and dont want to continue writing any code if this is all messed up.Ive been reading as much as humanly possible and im still just a little confused. I mean I understand the concepts of seperating the logic into different layers and tiers and all that but as far as my implementation of that I just feel somethings a bit off.

I have a solution and I want to divide it up into Business Tier, Data Tier, etc. I think I have to do this by creating a project that contains the data source, another with the forms, etc. Every time I try to add a new project, it literally opens a new project, seperate from the first.

The application sits on a virtual environment and when I remote in and run the application, it connects to the remote database. However, when I remote in with a service account and double click the same .exe, it tries to connect to the local host database and ignores the app.config. The code is the same, only the login name I use is different. The login I use is part of the local admin group. Any ideas?

I have attempted to make my first 3 tier application. In the process I have run into one problem I am yet to find an optimal solution for. Basically all my objects use an IFillable interface which forces the implementation of a sub as follows
Public Sub Fill(ByVal Datareader As Data.IDataReader) Implements IFillable.Fill
This sub then expects the Ids from the datareader will be identical to the properties of the object as such.
Me.m_StockID = Datareader.GetGuid(Datareader.GetOrdinal("StockID"))
In the end I end up with a datalayer that looks something like this.
Public Shared Function GetStockByID(ByVal ConnectionString As String, ByVal StockID As Guid) As Stock
Dim res As New Stock
Using sqlConn As New SqlConnection(ConnectionString)[code].....
Mostly this pattern seems to make sense. However my problem is, lets say I want to implement a property for Stock called StockBarcodeList.Under the above mentioned pattern any way I implement this property I will need to pass a connectionstring to it which obviously breaks my attempt at layer separation.how I might be able to solve this problem or am I going about this the completely wrong way? I am deliberately trying to avoid using the dataset in any form.

Building a large application using 3 tier architecture in vb.net. Question: I am a vb.net developer. I have developed small and medium size application with 2 tier architecture. Now I am going to develop a large application. I have decided to develop that application using 3 tier architecture. So I studied about 3 tier. Now I know how what is 3 tier and how to develop a simple application. And also I studied about .Net Remoting and Web services. In my project, 7 modules are available. Each module has 3 layers. How can I manage in a Single Solution?

I am a fairly rookie programmer who is trying to learn the basics of n-layered architecture (DAL, BLL, UI). The application I am programming is a single tier, 3-layer application written in VB.NET (.Net 3.5). Layers as follows:
DAL
BLL
UI
COMMON - contains DTO's right now.
I am having trouble determining what to pass between my BLL and UI. My instinct tells me that I should only pass data to the UI, and not the full business object from the BLL. Consider two scenarios:
1) Pass the BO directly from BLL to UI. This exposes BO methods and allows the UI direct access to the BO, which seems bad.
2) Pass only the pertinent data from the BO to the UI. For instance, a customer has a Name and Address. This data is really what we want to show/edit in the UI, so we would only return that data to the UI instead of the full BO. The UI would then call to the BLL to update a specific BO.
I am inclined to use #2, but I don't know the best way to implement it. The way I have it programmed now, if I only return data from the BLL, all references to my BO's will be lost and the GC will claim them. Based on this, I have some questions:
1) Should I keep business objects alive between calls to the BLL? The alternative is to re-create them every time I pass data through the BLL, which seems wrong.
2) What is the best way to keep a BO alive in a single tier architecture (how to hold a reference if we dont pass it to the UI?)
3) How do n-tier applications do this? Do they keep the BO's alive in the BLL and wait for an update from the UI? Doesn't this require a lot of "book keeping" in the BLL to make sure BO's are released when they are no longer needed?

I have problems with the updating and deleting of records in database. I'm using ObjectDataSource and the GridView to display the results in the database. Below is the codes for the update and delete (in the DAL (data access layer). BTW, I'm doing 3 tier architecture in VB.
'update the records accordingly in the database.
Public Function UpdateBooks(ByVal title As String, ByVal borrowDate As String, ByVal dueDate As String, ByVal NameBorrower As String, ByVal book_id As Integer) As Integer
Dim connectionString As String = My.Settings.dbConnection
[Code] .....
I don't know why, but every time I try to update (by clicking on the update button), every thing is not updated, the page would refresh then the records still remain the same in the GridView. As for delete, when I clicked on the 'delete' button, the record is not deleted, it still remains there.
These are the codes in the (BLL (business logic layer)):
Public Function getUpdateBooks(ByVal title As String, ByVal borrowDate As String, ByVal dueDate As String, ByVal NameBorrower As String, ByVal book_id As Integer) As Integer
Dim ds As Integer = UserDA.UpdateBooks(title, borrowDate, dueDate, NameBorrower, book_id)
Return ds
[Code] .....

I am working on a inventory application and I have a question, I have created a table for each of the main categories that I will be using, now if I wanted to add sub categories would I create another table for the sub directory and set the type as a child for its corresponding category or would it be easier to keep the main categories and just add another column in each table for "sub category" so it uses the same table but I can just filter it out easier?
If it is a better option for creating parent and child tables, how would I go about listing them in a hierarchical treeview to show parent and child sub-categories in them.

I'm trying to build a single-instance application, but not in the traditional sence. Instead of a simple silent prevention of launching a second application, I want it to send a message to said application so it launches a second mainform in my original process.
(I want some read-only cache (language, style,...) shared, and a few sources like local settings shared, but other then that all resources reside in the mainforms and act as seperate applications.)
(I'm not looking for specific code, more for hints/tips and/or general directions, more specificaly on what parameters do you check process equality, and what method do you use to pass the message? Windows Messages? Sockets? ...)

I am trying to copy a table from a network database to a local database. I used DAO and could check if the network table existed using a function that tried to assign a TableDef object to the table in question. If there was no error then I assumed that the table existed and the function returned true...Or it would error out and return false.I could then proceed with the copy or not as the case may be.I am converting the code to ADO.net and need to know how to check for a table. I am using System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement to try to add a local account to the local administrators group with the following code but am getting the error below on the group.Members.Add(usr) line. Both usr and group are created as objects and if I create a Test group, I can add the user to the Test group. I know the group object is the local administrators group and not the domain group because i changed the description on the local administratrors group and the group object is correct so it appears to be something specific to the local administrators group.

I have a datagridview which is bound to a local databse table through a Linq to SQL class.
Everything works as I would expect, when the application runs, up to a point.
If, in the datagridview tasks pane I enable Adding, Editing and Deleting all work as expected.
If I disable Adding & Deleting, leaving Editing enabled, Editing works as expected.
If I disable Deleting & Editing, but leave Adding enabled, Adding does not work, despite the row for new records being displayed. I can move around the row but not enter data.
I suspect somehow its the datasource as opposed to the datagridview that is the cause of my problem but as I say, I can add rows if the Enable Editing option is selected.
Changing the relevant properties programatically makes no difference.
I've been searching for the reason for a couple of days without success.
I have a workaround, by leaving Enable Editing set and programatically setting each row during the RowPostPaint event to be readonly except the row for new records. I would just like to understand what is going on.

I have some scripting exp in html, bash, sql, and am working my way through a video tutorial of VB, studio2008 and access 2008 are the apps, though I am thinking of switching to a freel sql application, as my sql skills are pretty decent, just need to rap them into VB.I am working on creating a winform application that will live on an employee's local laptop, that can be used for tracking troubleshooting incidents. The app will write data to local database first independent of internet connection, but can then upload changes to case data that have taken place since last sync, to the current web addressed server. Presently, we access case data through browser, but it is slow, and very tedious, and my idea is to create a stand alone app that can hopefully automate a lot of the tedious functions.. ie create cases from templates, etc..
So far, I created a layout that I thought would work well, by dragging and dropping from tool bar in Visual studio. I also created a database that can store data locally in access. Now, I am trying to figure out how to bind text boxes, month calendars, etc to the actual fields in the database. I am here for general advice, but specifically, I have a tab with a month calendar tool, and a data-grid view beneath it. I want the user, to be able to select dates, or date spreads on the calendar and have cases relative to those dates, display in the datagridview below.[code]and have the month calendar utility populate the case_dttm portion of the query.

I'm currently under way with a computing project for 6th form and I have encountered a problem when working with a local database.
To give an overview:
-My program is intending to take in data on lorries, drivers and other sections of the haulage industry through multiple forms and afterwards be returned in a suitable manner.
-I have no trouble in reading data from my database that I have set up. However I am unable to write back to the database.
-I can add the relevant new data to either the specific table(Driver_Table in this case) of the Database1DataSet.xsd or to a table set up in this manner.
-My problem is with the Driver_TableTableAdapter.update method.
-When I call this it returns a value of 1 (for one row added) but does not write this to the database.
In specifics the particular section (created to test this section of code) is:
'Dim tbl As New Database1DataSet.Driver_TableDataTable
Driver_TableTableAdapter1.Fill(Database1DataSet1.Driver_Table)
' Driver_TableTableAdapter1.Fill(tbl)
[code].....
