i have an application that store a data about a properties for sall i use the serlization and desrlization to store the property details to an XML file i call it PropertiesList .xml..i got a form called search it contain 2 text boxes when the user write down a postcode for a property then click search i need the application to search the xml file that contain the details and retrive all the properties that match the searching words and list the result in a list box.

is it possible to get the details of an mp3 file like the Contributing Artist, Artist, Album, Year etc. and display it into a form? I am using the IO namespace and I have almost tried all the methods and properties under my variable.

I am try to edit the extended file properties of media files (specifically AVI)). Using code from [URL] I can successfully collect all of the properties in an avi file (35 of them), but I have not found how I can edit the exended properties. Using the simple the code below I would like to be able to update the "Comments" value in the avi properties to read "Hello world" (for example) and for this change to be written permanently to the avi.

I am trying to retrieve file details from files in the Program Files folder. I receive an error while trying to retrieve file details.
Dim sFileName As String = ("%ProgramFiles%Windows DefenderMSASCui.exe")
Dim Info As FileVersionInfo
Info = FileVersionInfo.GetVersionInfo(sFileName)
Msgbox(Info.ProductName.ToString())
I receive file not found error at 3rd line. But if I change the path from "%ProgramFiles%Windows DefenderMSASCui.exe" to "c:Program FilesWindows DefenderMSASCui.exe" it works fine.
What should I do if I want to retrieve file details from the path which includes a "%" character?

I have a Login class with a doLogin() method which is called from a Button.OnClick() event from my Login form.If the login is successful, I then instantiate a User Class with the users details (username, first name etc.).The problem is, I don't know the best way to store this User object .I want to be able to retrieve details from this Object 'on-the-fly' from other forms, Such as UserObj.getFirstName(). And then have the ability to remove the object for when the user logs out, for example.
I really don't want to have to pass the object around to every form that would need it. That seems unnecessary and I'm sure there's a much easier and logical way.If it was possible to store objects in My.Settings, then It'd be perfect, but you can't (i think?).

I'm using VB.NET in Visual Studio 2008 in a Vista 64-bit OS. I'm trying to find an easy way (there must be one) to quickly retrieve from the registry the application file name and path to use in a Shell command to open a particular file. Specifically, I want the user in my app to be able to click on a PDF file and have the app open that PDF file using the application associated with PDF file types - Acrobat Reader, for example. Anyone have any suggestions as to proper coding & syntax for the following sequence?:
(1) Get name of .exe file associated with .pdf file type (most likely from the HKey Root Classes hive)
(2) Get path for the .exe file
(3) Shell("[pathname]appname.exe filename.pdf")
I've spent a couple of hours looking through the forums and haven't found what I'm looking for.

I was asked to develop a simple application to handle car inventory. Each car has a LOT of properties (about 130, like license plate number, type, was it serviced, etc.). Some of these properties are represented by bit data type in a database some are varchar.
The problem is that I need to provide search functionality for any of all these properties and any combination of them. This results in a search form with about 130 controls. I certainly do not want to put the SQL query together manually by checking the state of each and every control. To propagate the problem further I need to be able to search for partial strings as well (i.e. if the user enters "porsc" into the car brand field then all Porsches should be found).

On my seat plan system, there are many workstations(around 150+ per floor). each workstation is define by a linklabel. when a user click on a particular workstation, a new form will appear. And that form will pop up to show who occupy on that workstation.And here is my problem,. On my form where I have many linklabels.. I also have a textbox to search for a particular linklabel name,.And if I the user enter the name of the workstation name..the linklabel will change it's background color.

On Windows 7, VB.NET Express, I have developed a simple Forms application. I don't really make use of any external plugins or anything - it just has a couple buttons, pictureboxes, GDI operations to modify some images.And now it is complete. And I would like to already upload it. But, since this is actually the first time I try to submit something, what other details should I keep in mind when distributing my application? I mean stuff like... will my application work as expected in other machines? Other Windows versions? I am not in a proper position to test it in other machines, I fear, so I am relying the "default" settings and hoping it will simply work.

I have tried putting my GetFilesRecursive function into a separate background worker to run first so I can update the GUI however I am struggling on how to return the List of found files back to my application (I get cross-threading exception) and how to update the progress bar to show the progress of the GetFileRecursive function so the user knows it is processing the list of files and has not crashed/frozen.

I use a fontdialog box in my application allowing users to change the font details within my application. This works fine but unfortunatly I don't seem to be able to set the values in the dialogbox as they are read only.
Basically if the user has Bold Wingdings set and wishes to change it to something else then when they open up the fontdialog box I would like to be able to set the font to wingdings and bold so the user can see what they previously selected. Word seems to do this so why cant I?

I have a combo box on my application (working with VB.net) called CmbAttendantstatus. I have sent the dropdownstyle = dropdownlist at the Properties level of the combobox.
There are 200 field types e.g;
Current Attendant
Ever Attendant
Never Attendant etc
The issue is I can only select one from the list, fine, but I want to be able to type the first letter on the combobox and it takes me to the nearest field type rather than looking through the entire drop list. For example I want Never Attendant, I just need to type N and the drop list takes me to anything starting from N and if I add E for example any field starting with NE shows up for selection. Presently, when the dropdownlist is selected you are not allowed to type anything...

I am in need of a small application, that will allways be topmost and will send keystrokes to the last active application (typically notepad or an explorer window). Every search seems to return old and rather complex solutions using Win32 library functions, but I was kinda hoping, that .Net allowed for a neater and more simple solution.I need a code example or link on how to retrieve the currently active application window from another application just starting up.

My search application isn't working. When the "Search" window pops up, the label stays frozen on "C:". The application isn't freezing, just the search. Why? I can still use the buttons on it, and everything else seems to work fine.

Currently I have around 3200 songs that I accidentally renamed and moved to the root of my drive. I want to write a script to put them back into an organized file structure. I am trying to use a fileupload, to add rows to my gridview on this page. This page is basically a simple admin panel where I can add data to my database. The file upload is used to grab the path of the file and upload the path to the database not the file. The problem is whenever i run my program pick a file, it uploads fine expect the path shows up as true not as the path. the gridview and details view both use the same sqladapater

I'm trying to export the details in my datalist into a PDF file by using this third part program called Itextsharp. However, I'm encountering problems in generating the PDF as it keeps giving me the "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error which points to my "htmlparser.Parse(sr)"
I been trying for 2 hours now to fix this problem however no progress. Does anyone here have experience in Itextsharp? Could you shed some light onto this problem?
