Create A Function To Extract The Filename And Number From Saved Files?
Apr 9, 2012
I'm trying to create a function to extract the filename and number from saved files where the filename and number is not known before hand. I successfully created this example but the file name in the example is hardcoded. My program creates backup files and numbers them starting a one. I want to extract the saved files and list them in a treelist by filename only.ie.. unknown filename 1, backup 1, saved file 1, saved file 2, here is what i have but it only retrieves the hardcoded filename.

How would I do that? Sample code is below that demonstrated that the file I opened contained the full path and file name.
I want to extract just the path and serialize that to the user.config file as a UserSetting value. Then next time the user opens the dialog box, it uses that saved path string to go immediately to the location previously used.
If openFileDialog1.ShowDialog() = DialogResult.OK Then
Properties.Settings.Default.persistConnectionType = openFileDialog1.FileName
Properties.Settings.Default.Save();

I am wondering if there is a way to extract a file's title name from the FileName property.VB6's Common Dialong had "FileTitle". That seems to be gone. I have a small window app that does not have the room to display the full path as part of the window title.

I've been trying to create a function that checks if a number is a prime. according to [URL]..I have created a function although It doesn't work as expected.
[Code]...
It sometimes returns true for composite numbers. oh and I know if you google it you get functions that do this, but most of them look inefficient so i'm trying to make my own.

I'm having a problem setting the maximum number of records that can be saved into Access. The maximum allowance is to be 10. Records are being pulled from a listbox. The whole problem is that if the listbox has 7 items and my table already has 5 records, it still records them, making a total of 12. What I'm looking for is a way to trap that to a max of 10.[code]...

Some printers aren't actually printers e.g. CutePDF, PDF995 etc are printer drivers that "print" PDF files, and the built in fax support for Windows is through a printer driver that "prints" to the fax modem.
Both PDF and fax need a little bit more information than a normal print job - PDF needs a filename, Fax needs a phone number. Usually there is a pop-up dialog that prompts the user for the extra information.
Is there any way to set this information programmatically?
There is a property Printing.PrintDocument.PrinterSettings.PrintFileName but this only seems to work when Printing.PrintDocument.PrinterSettings.PrintToFile is set to TRUE, which is not the case in these situations (even though a PDF printer writes a file, it is not "save print job to file" in the normal sense).

I'm developing a command line application in Visual Basic .Net 2005 for converting RTF files into TXT. The application works perfect except for one thing. The files saved with MS Word containing some textbox make trouble. I'll explain it better with an example
1 - I open MS Word, I create a new document.
2 - I insert a texbox and i write some words inside.
3 - I save the file as RTF.
4 - I use my command line application for converting the RTF into TXT. The text inside the textbox doesn't appear anywhere.
The thing is that if I open the RTF file with wordpad it shows the text. It's not in a text box, but it shows it.The problem is that this application will read files uploaded by users automatically so I can't just leave it like this, I have to take into account that there is the possibility that some user will save an RTF file with a textbox inside so I need it to be able to get the contents of the textbox the same way wordpad does.
Here is the code
Try
Dim args(2) As String
args = System.Environment.GetCommandLineArgs
Dim c As New System.Windows.Forms.RichTextBox
[code]....

Dim Files() As String
Files = e.Data.GetData(DataFormats.FileDrop)
Dim sReader As New StreamReader(Files(0))

I have a question about how to get a button to check for a textbox contents, and then compare that with data in my fairly simple database (It's meant as a login procedure).
Here's my database:
It has 2 values, 1 for the manager and 1 for the Admin
Here's my Login screen:
Now...
Everything works just fine, all the code is correct so all the buttons work. For the program i'm making, there's 3 types of users, 1 user who can only change how much money a customer owes the company, 1 user that can add new customers and other little things and one Admin who can change pin numbers and manage backups and stuff like that. For the last 2, i need pin-number/password protection obviously.
The user should enter the pin and then press ok, after which the ok button checks if the pin number the user entered, corresponds to either identifier 1 or 2 (5566 or 6655 for now) and if correct, show the user the next form.

Quick query...I'm trying to scan a long string and return any values that occur between the tags <FileName> and </FileName> I've got a bit of code here to use regular expressions to return the position of the occurunces of both substrings..Just wanted to find out if there is any way to scan for both substrings within one loop (as im currently doing 2, one for the first substring and one for the 2nd) so I can use something along these lines:
ringlist = Mid(XMLRESP, (startloc + 1), (endloc - 1))
MsgBox(ringlist)
to msg box the value between the substrings...either that or another approach to return the value between the 2 substrings (it can be of variable length)
Dim patternstart As String = "<FileName>"
Dim patternend As String = "</FileName>"
Dim matchesstart As MatchCollection = Regex.Matches(XMLRESP, patternstart)
[code].....

I am using Resharper 4.5 in Visual Studio 2008. Whenever I try to extract a block of code into a method, it tries to create a subroutine and not a function. The return type option is disabled. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can get it to create a function and not a subroutine?
