Basically back in VB6 days, I created several VB6 apps with Access as the backend database. I'd package my Access db file with the application setup, which copied it on to a shared network drive, and then different computers on the LAN could use the same backend database file, and that worked just fine. With SQL and VB .Net, I've done work with a SQL database hosted on a remote server, so you can basically build your query string easily and anyone can connect to it from anywhere, and it works just fine. However, what I'd like to do is have a local SQL express database as the backend for a VB .Net application and make a setup program that can install it in a way that it could be shared on a Local area network, without the user who is installing the application do anything.
I know about building a connection string with the local machine name, but I don't really have any experience with including an actual MDF file with the application. Does anyone know how it works, and is it a better approach? Does it work similar to placing an access file in a shared unc path?I know that ClickOnce (which is awesome) can install SQL express easily on a user's machine. However, the key is that I want SQL express to be installed only on the machine that is going to be the database server in a LAN enviornment, and not on every machine, unless it is neccesseary. And then how does your VB app know how to build the connection string to access the database from any machine on the local share?

I have been getting an error when moving my application from my local machine to a web server. (I have not been getting the errors on my local host)[code]The first of the exceptions is the first error that came up using SQLOLEDB.1 as my provider, I started playing around with different providers and got the second 2nd exception.

I have an application that accesses a sql server 2008 database. The server and database is stored on my local harddrive and I would like to learn to scale this up to having multiple users in our office access the application which I will i deploy on a server. For now the database will stay on my pc until I am ready to put it on a dedicated server for myself but for now how do I allow the application still to access my database without allowing anyone direct access to my server or my pc drive. Here is my current connection string:

I am trying to deploy a VB.net application that is currently using SQL Server 2008 as its database to connect to.I need this application to be able to include a copy of its data so that wherever I install the application there is no need for them to install SQL Express.
What i have been reading is that I should of been using SQL Server Compact Edition to do this. Is there any way that I can do this with using an .MDF file?If not, is it possible to convert an .MDF file to .SDF and then just include it in my vb.net app?

I have recently developed a back end database in SQL server 2008 R2 and attached it to a application in VB express 2010.Everything works fine and when i publish the application, it works fine on my machine, but once i try to setup up the application on another machine i get the error message: A network related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server was not found or not accessible please verify the instance name is correct or allow remote connections.I have read numerous forums on this saying about changing the connection string and instance name.but with being novice i dont understand what needs to be changed etc.The sql server allows remote connections, but i am unsure what else needs changing to allow the application to work with the database on another machine.

I have an application I have developed which works great on individual PC's. However I've had some interest from a few customers that asked if I have a network version for site licencing. If my app did not save any data or write any reg entries, this might have been ok. But it does to the local computer. I also built in my own copy protection and trial function that stores data in the registry on the local computer. What would I need to do to enable my application to run on a server/network share, so that the only a serial number needed is for the server?

I have developed a VB.NET program using a strongly typed dataset. This dataset has its connection to a SQL Server 2008 R2. The software should now be additionally used offline. The database should be exported to a *.sdf database. If no connection to the SQL server is produced, the software have to try to connect to the *.sdf database.I would like to achieve:
1. Export the data in the SQL Server 2008 R2 database to a local *.sdf file.
2. This *.sdf file has to work as an alternate connection string in the strongly typed dataset.

I want to use my SQL Server DB over a network. I have setup server client applications. The thing is for my current DB, I need to give it to server administrator who attaches the DB to SQLExpress instance and only then my network computers can access that.My question is, is there any way that my vb.net application could attach this DB through code at runtime, and DB gets all rights that are necessary to access it over the network?
I can attach DB using Create procedure but for this I need to know the sa password. Is there any way that I could achieve the same goal without sa passord and sa intervention? My only purpose is to enable my DB to be accessible over the network with all read /Write rights.

Here is my idea so far: I have a bunch of computers connected in a local network. One of them is a MySQL server, one will have a vb.NET program wich will act as a "second server" and the rest will be different clients. What I want to do is that the "second server" will send out some kind of message or network package to some of the clients in the network, and they will execute a code based on what message it is, or what kind of package it is. I'll give you a simple example:

My ASP.NET 4.0 Web App is unable to access Network Printers, while debugging on VS 2010. It can access local printers. Seems like it may be a permissions issue. Since VS2010 Debugging runs on ASP.NET Development Server, it must be running under the account I used to log into Windows, right? Does that user need to be added as an Admin in that printers users? Is there any account that I can impersonate to get this working?

I'm breaking my head over the next problem. I have 2 applications (client/terminal). the client reads out the webcam and generates an image. This image needs to be send to the terminal which can accept multiple clients. At the terminal all received images are placed in an ordered panel. The purpose of this application is to monitor multiple webcams. What i can't get to work is how to send it on the client side and receive on the terminal side.

Greetings, I'm a little bit confused about SQL Server Compact behavior.I have a small app that uses a small sdf file located on a network share. The problem is that while the app itself is working perfectly well using the connection string that points the location of the sdf file on a network drive, when I try to open the same sdf using the Server Explorer I get this error:
SQL Server Compact does not support opening database files on a network share.Obviously, if the app IS working it does indeed support network shares, then why Server Explorer cannot open it?
I copied the database file to a local drive but it's not very convenient. What might be the problem?

I work as an IT Administrator and manage a few Servers, Routers, VPN Connections over a number if locations. What I am wanting to do is create a vb.net app that will go out and ping say every 2-5mins each of the servers, routers, that are listed and then shows beside the Hostname a Green Circle which means online and if its a Red Circle its offline, and the screen refreshes if their is a problem or a device / service comes back online.
Then if its offline email a particular email address showing the hostname of either the server or router and which location saying its offline. If possible to make it easier to change the devices to show possible have a txt file or something like that with the Hostname, IP Address, Location.

I have 2 clients connected via a server program. When 1 client hits an arrow key, a picturebox moves on client1 and on client2.Before adding this network functionality, the picturebox on client1 moved fast with each click. Now, there is a delay of like 2-3 seconds.I know the code isn't optimal, but i'm not a networking wizard. What i'm doing is when pressing a key on client 1, it passes a text to a textbox in client 2 which then has the picturebox move in client 2 depending on the text. The slowdown occurs on client 1, which is odd because the picturebox isn't directly connected to the network code.[code]

I am creating a server-client type application that allows the network administrator to perform tasks on remote computers by using TCP sockets (TCPClient and TCPListener). The server application needs to send out a message to a client machine (with client application installed) and from this, the client application will send back the required data (i.e. system info, task progress etc). This part works fine. However, I am having trouble in getting the client application to constantly listen for an information request in the background. It should be listening whenever the application is running. What I want to do is to have an event handler which, when a message comes through, acts upon the instructions to send the relevant information back. The server does not need to constantly listen for data, as it will only receive data after it has sent a request.

I am working on a project using VS2010 SQL2008 and I saw an ODD behaviour , First let me tell you that the app runs without any problem in my developing pc (Windows Xp sp3 32bit)But when I was trying the application in another pc (Windows 7 32bit)I got this exception: A network-related or instance-specific error occured while establishing a connection to SQL server. The server was not found or was not accessible.Verfiy that the instance name is correct and that SQl server is configured to allow remote connections.
Now what is weird in this exception; Is when the application reaches the DataAdpater.Fill(dataset) line I got this exception but when the app reaches the DataAdpter.Insert(....) It runs without any problem .
And what is more weird is that I noticed that the dataset that is used in the previous insert procedure can later be filled with dataAdapter.Fill(...) procedure which it was giving me an exception before .
I tried these things as a solution:
1)Checked SQlBrowser running..
2)No aliases to Sql server at all to remove...
3)remote area connection--OK
4)TCP and UDP port 1433,1434 exception in firewall
5)Unistalled my only antivirus Norton
6)Added Tcp/IP ports in Sql protocols
7)My connection String is : onnectionString="Data Source=ALISQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=PALMSDATABASE;Integrated Security=True"
8)Also tried using Sql Server authentication (user Id and password)
what is the difference between fill and insert? My app. runs smoothly on the original pc ,What should I do?
