View 4 Repliesiam currently working on my uni project and i have encountered a problem with valadation section. My system displays a message telling the user to input any fields that they have missed out on, listing the name of the field. However as these IF functions are in order the user must input the data in the order of how it is in the code. for example if the "consweight" is inputed and the calculate button is pressed, it thinks that all valadation above it has occured, when those fields are still empty.

To object oriented programming and programming with visual basic .net (vb 2008 express). regarding storing of information but not in a database. Someone mentioned using binary or xml serialization. So I researched that and after two long 8 hour days of messing around with binary serialization and about a dozen different code techniques i finally found one that seems to work. I created a module that serializes two variables and appends them into a file. The same module also has a sub that deserializes the information from the file and displays in a message box. If needed I'll provide the code later.
Really the problem I am having is that my message box only displays the first entry into the file and no other. So I can append any number of variables to the file but every time I call the subroutine in my module it only displays the first entry. How do you read all of the file? Also can I search the file for a particular value of a variable? The variables are codependent. The two variables are simply a date and a string representing a changing code that corresponds to that specific date. So I'd like to be able to say search for a date and retrieve both the date and the code.
However I don't have any idea how to do this. Also the messagebox.show method is probably not the best way to illustrate the information in the file but I'm still new and I'm not sure the best way to show all the info in the file. For instance if I wanted to show the entire contents or just the codes corresponding to certain dates. I know a database is probably the better answer but I've gotten this far without one, lol, I'm too stubborn to change now. Once I figure this out, I'll switch and try the same technique with a database.
I need an example snippet of code in which the computer displays a message about every 20 seconds until a key is pressed.
View 3 RepliesA form that will display the contents of a folder? I have my forms set up, I want the user to then click on a button that will load up a nw form which will contain a window that is a folder in one of my drives. There may be folders inside this main folder which the user can go into, but they can't go back frrom the original main folder and look at the other contents. First up, Is an explorer form the one I am looking for? Making one of those, it seems to be the right path but where to from there?
Another thing I need to be able to do is have the user double click on the files inside of the folder. When double clicked the folder still maintains its current state, as the files that will be clicked will do the work in the background. I have all the forms set up and linked together, I just need to know how to get this folder into a form..
create a message box that stores my user name, message, and post datetime into the database as messages are sent. Soon came to realise, what if the user changed his name? So I decided to use the user id (icn) to identify the message poster instead. However, my chunk of codes keep giving me the same error. Says that there are no rows in the dataset.
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Dim name As String
Dim icn As String
Dim message As String

how to create an error message by message box to tell the user to enter a number only if they key in a character value?

I'm in a computer science class, and we are writing simple programs using Visual Basic 2008. I am really inept when it comes to this, as I have never done it before. I need to write a program that: "Asks the user for 5 numbers and computes the average. It then displays the average with an appropriate message before the average."
I have been really close with this, but I can't get the numbers to add up, then divide by 5, and display a pop up message.
1, Is it possible to change the size of the message box because currently the header text of my message box is off the screen.
MessageBox.Show( _
"Click OK to continue", "The following job has been cancelled", MessageBoxButtons.OK, _
MessageBoxIcon.Exclamation)
So in this case it only shows "The following job has bee" so is it possible to resize my message box so it shows the full length of the header text?
2, I have been using try catch structures in my coding, but in my message box I can't get to add the header text?
Catch ex1 As Exception
MessageBox.Show( _
"Error..." vbCrLf & ex1.ToString)
[Code]...
However the above just displays Error twice within the message box and no header. Also if possible how would I add a messagebox icon with the try catch structure?
I have a single instance app that is working fine except for this strange (to me) issue.
The user could double click on FileA and my app opens and displays the file contents (the path of FileA has been passed as a parameter) No problem there. The problem is that if the user then double clicks on FileB and I read the parameter it still contains the path to FileA. What trick am i missing here?
(If i add a debug line that forces the code to be FileB's path the the app works correctly in terms of opening a new tab, reading the contents etc.) (vb.net 2010)
In my application, the user clicks a single button and the program displays each network adapter description into a message box and then gets all the ip info for the workstation and places it into a text file and opens that text for reading. What I would really like for it to do would be to display all the network adapters into a single messagebox instead of messagebox for every adapter like it is currently doing. Here is the code I have on that button. Let me know if anyone needs more info or has any questions:

Basically I am trying to enable the user the ability to select a folder and the folders music files populate a list box. I want two list boxes on the page, one with all the contents of the folder and then the other one for files selected from the first box. I have no clue on how to do this at all...
View 4 RepliesI have some custom user controls in my .net winforms program that do not display correctly when the user has selected larger text size. This setting:
My controls look like this:
Instead of like this:
The bill to area and ship to area are both custom controls. I don't know if this is contributing to the problem but I do have code in each to scale the phone/fax areas to stretch nicely, like this code from the bill to control,
Private Sub panFaxPhone_Resize(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles panFaxPhone.Resize
panFax.Width = (panFaxPhone.Width / 2) - 1
panPhone.Width = (panFaxPhone.Width / 2) - 1
panFax.Left = panFaxPhone.Width - panFax.Width
End Sub
How can I get my controls to size correctly while still respecting the users choice for larger text (I don't want to just set the AutoScaleMode to None)? After playing with this for a long time it seems to be a problem with anchors in the child controls. See this below image, the inner black box is the control with its border turned on, the text boxes (like name) are anchored left and right and should stretch to fill the control, but don't.
I inherited a project that includes a dialog between two applications. One in native C++ the other in VB.NET. The protocol is such that the first 4 bytes (32 bits) of the message encodes the size. However the VB.NET side never sets these first four bytes, however it does use the .net method BeginSendTo, which accepts an argument for size. Does the BeginSendTo method automatically add the size to the beginning of the message in the form of a 4 byte int?

Am I missing an import or something? I currently have no imports.
How can I do it so every time the user loads my application it will automatically (without prompt, or user selecting) upload all the files in a folder i select beforehand and add them into ListBox1

I created a script for caching some images my program needs, so they aren't downloaded from the web everytime. But the cache folder is getting big, and it's getting big fast. It's not really the plan to have a cache of 1Gb or something like that, so I would like to create something like this to set the maximum size:
But I don't really know were to start. Sure I can create some check, and if the maximum is exceeded, remove the whole map, or the oldest files. But maybe the oldest files are the one's used the most.
In my application, user can select a folder via folder browser dialog box.
However, I want them the freedom to type folder name manually as well.
When they select folder path via folder browser dialog box, everything runs fine.
However, VB is not accepting user typed folder path eg. "C:Appjob"
i need to display the size of a folder but if i sum file.lengh by file.lefth it takes to long,is there a fast way to see how much space a folder uses?

I am making a program, where the user enters 6 numbers in 6 different text boxes, and it displays the larger of those 6 numbers. But I also want to make it where if the user enters a string value (like S for instance) in the text boxes, it gives an message and says "please enter the numbers again" and the user gets to enter the 6 numbers again. But when I do try to do that, it gives an error message saying conversion from "w/e the user entered" to Double is not valid. If the user just enters the numbers, it works fine. However, I am trying to make it if the user does enter non numeric value, it gives a message window and the user can reenter the numbers again.
Here is my code Example
CODE:
This is where I am trying to use IsNumeric to show a message if a user does not enter a string so the user can renter the numbers again, but when the user does enter a string value (say in textbox 1) it gives me an error message saying conversion from "S" to 'double' is not valid.
CODE:
Then right here this is where I have my series of ifs statements, this part works fine, it displays the largest numbers of the 6 textboxes every time. Error free.
CODE:
And do this with variable number 2, 3, 4, 5.
I know there are easier ways to do these with arrays and stuff. But I am not there yet. I am still learning about ifs and stuff.
