View 8 RepliesYears ago when coding with VB6 and earlier, I used a file open command to create, read, and write a file that made it easy to store useful information.I believe it was binary and you wrote/read the data to a specific line in the file. When you opened the file with something like notepad, it just showed random ascii chars. When I needed a line of data, I could specify what line to load it from.
View 2 RepliesI get mixed results in Google, so I'm wondering how can I simply launch a ReadMe.txt file in Notepad thats in the same directory as my application?
View 1 RepliesI need to read the following file in vb .net:"C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDataStoreDataStore.edb". It contains info about installed software updates. I've taken a look at the file by opening it with notepad. This isn't a plain-text file obviously, but I can find and see the text I want easily with Notepad, and I want to extract this text by using VB .NET.
The problem is, i've tried to read the file by using an io.streamreader, but I can't get the same results as in notepad. I've tried to change encoding but that doesn't work. I mean in Notepad, I can read some text easily: "A s e c u r i t y i s s u e h a s b e e n i d e n t i f i e d" [...], but the only thing I get with the streamreader is some bunch of ugly characters, and the text I saw with Notepad isn't there.
Do I have to read the file in binary or what? HOW NOTEPAD DOES IT? HOW DO I READ THIS FILE LIKE NOTEPAD DOES?I absolutely need to extract some updates info that aren't in either the registry or WMI/QFE.
if any notepad file with different-different extension like .java, . html ,.txt will be opened in the vb.net environment than it will create its own .exe fie so without notepad installation the file should be open anywhere with its saved content.

I am using asp.net oledb to export information to excel file. I encounter problems when the information to export becomes too big, in this case the code I have given below, the excel file generated becomes an empty spreadsheet.If I changed the loop to 1123 for insertion of the rows. The generated excel file is fine, 1125 rows, and 4 columns shown.A test program in windows form is also working fine regardless of how many rows.[code]I couldn't find a solution to my problem as well. What I did eventually was to run the process using another separate windows service. The code works perfectly fine running from a windows form or service program, but not asp.net, not sure why.
View 1 RepliesI have this issue that occurs with me and driving me crazy i have a report that contains thousands of records and i need to export it to excel , but the excel normal extension .xls

Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."but when i test the file i drag it and open it in an empty notepad all the records shows up correctly

I have a question regarding opening a file to view it in wordpad and i would like to know where to start.
I have looked through a few posts and the only "open" things i can find are to edit the contents of a file without viewing the contents.
How can i open a file in wordpad or What should i be looking for to find out about this myself?

I am trying to write login page code for the login button but can't find how to find a string in a .txt file. The only code I have managed to find on the subject is opening up the text file with the
FileOpen(1, "File location", OpenMode.Output) code, but even this would be best removed as it would open the text file containing all usernames and passwords within the file.I need the system to search for a specific string within a file ( Usernames___Passwords.txt (159bytes)Number of downloads: 134), and with that string find the password associated with it (in my attached example the letters/words after the apostrophe) but stopping at the end of the line.
How can i make a VB app read a .DAT file as if i opened it in notepad.
View 13 RepliesI'm creating a notepad application with richtextbox as the editor. I have pretty much all of the funtions I want for the application itself, but I want a code that will help me understand whether it has been saved to the computer already.For example, just like in notepad, where you can open a .txt file, and if you don't modify it, it won't prompt you to save on application.exit(), but if you do modify the file in any way, it will ask you if you want to save, and it will automatically save over the opened file without popping up a savefiledialog.
I want my application to do the same thing, and also with any files that I save. For example, when I save a new file, after it prompts me with the savefiledialog, and I save the file to a directory, on my next "save" not "save as" I want it to recognize where it previously saved the file to overwrite it without prompting me with a savefiledialog like "Save As" does.There must be a code to recognize where it was last saved, or opened, but right now my default directory ("Initial directory") for both the open and savefiledialogs are set to the C:/ direcotry.
I'm building a simple Notepad where users can open CSS & HTML files & was wondering how I can program it to open the file in the main text box like the regular Windows Notepad does.
View 4 RepliesI just published this simple console application that is supposed to show a textbox with the value of a setting called "userID" with value 1001. This works like a charm. Now what I need is to change this value outside the editor, from notepad etc. When I open the application a lot in there is non-sence etc. but with a quick (ctrl + F) I found the value 1001, and changed this to some other integer.
I ran the application again, and it failed, didn't even give any userful error-message. At a point I tried just opening a newly published non-corrupted version of the application, didn't change anything, then saved from notepad, and it were also corrupted. It seems like notepad can't open some characters or something. Do I need to publish the application in some specific text-unicode language or something? I use vb.net for this
I'm having some trouble using resource files. In my project I'm using a bunch of bitmap files and two txt files. Bitmaps are used as backgrounds for controls, but .txt files I want to open in Notepad or WordPad. Till now I was accesing them from a file path on my machine:
ControlName.backgroundimage = New Bitmap(direcorypath & "/Map.bmp")
Process.Start(direcorypath & "/Instrukcje.txt")
And it worked fine. Now I added these files to my resources (it's practical for me to have them in executable file) And replaced those lines with:
ControlName.backgroundimage = New Bitmap(MyProject.My.Resources.Map)
Process.Start(MyProject.My.Resources.Instrukcje)
For bitmap it works fine, but for txt file an error occurs saying that a file cannot be found.
Interestin thing is: when I type "MyProject.My.Resources.Instrukcje" in "Watch" it shows the content of the file. So it is there, only not as a file?
give me code that clicks on file button in notepad please or tell me how to do it?
I did this but it wont work:

View 7 RepliesI have searched, but failed to find a suitable answer to this. My small app saves a text file using a savefiledialog and stream writer. Then if successful, displays a messagebox confirming sucess and asks if the user wants to open the text file now. and this is the problem... How do I determine if the user has changed the filename and or path in the savefiledialog when saving? I'd prefer not to hard code a path and file name if possible.... but that seems like the only option? and therefore I can't show the file straight after saving reliably??

I'm working with vb.net 2008. My application generates 1 excel file (with login details etc). The application will store user results for various sections into csv files. I'm trying to combine the csv files into the excel file. I'm trying to get this to work with one csv file initially ...but I am ending up with a blank Excel file. This is what I've tried so far:
Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
Dim oExcel As Object

We have a Windows based application whose GUI is in Unicode coding (UTF-16 I believe). But each time I copy a string from a cell of MS Excel 2003 or from Nodepad and paste it to the GUI of our application, the string can not be displayed correctly, just comes out. ( but if you type directly from the keyboard into the GUI, it's fine). I believe it is because the string from Excel or Notepad is one-byte string (maybe UTF-8, I am not sure). What is default encoding in Excel 2003? How can I make it work correctly - change the encoding in Excel or Notepad or some other way?
View 2 RepliesI need to open an excel file from vb.net and then search it for specific data. I then need to take those data and insert them into text boxes on a form that i have created. This is all controlled by a button click. I already have some code that will open a file dialog box and let me navigate to the correct file, but I am having trouble with the search portion. I have tried the Find function but I am not sure of the proper syntax. I am using Visual Studio 2008 and Excel 2003.

I like to compress the xmldata before the data is provided to the client as an excel file. I am trying to compress and deliver it as a .zip file. its not working Here's my code below. I tried compressing it, converting it to bytes etc etc. The issue with below code is, the XSL transformation is not happening properly and the output excel file is raw xml with some .net exception at the end. (that's what I see on the .xls file that's downloaded at the end) Before I started working on compression my below code was working fine that gives properly formatted excel file from the xml input. the excel file is so nice you can't even tell it was from XML.

I have a folder of around 200 notepad files with ticket information inside.Essentially, I need to compile a single PDF or Excel spreadsheet from all the information inside the individual notepad files.I don't want to have to open each notepad file, then copy and paste its data manually. I'd prefer to use some sort of loop function that opens each notepad file, extracts the data, and puts it onto an excel or PDF sheet.
View 18 RepliesI am creating a shell for a FORTRAN application which reads a tab delimited text file.Because I am using Excel to manipulate data, is it possible to use the Excel Automation features to "save as" a tab delimited text file?The only method available seems to be a unicode text format, which does not work. Or is there another format that mimics tab delimited so that the FORTRAN application will read such a file without difficulty?
