I use GDI+ graphics in vb.net (express 2008). A simple ball animation was fast using an old computer and video card, but very slow after upgrading to a new computer with a hi-end GeFoce GFX 260 video card.Windows 7, 64 bit.I have tried adjusting all the video card settings I can find, but still slow.
View 3 RepliesWe have a GIS application that has some performance issues. It creates and sends an image to a web browser. We start with a Bing Maps imager, add complex polygons (complete with transparent fill), save the finished image as a PNG, and send it to the browser.
The idea has come up that we could possibly install a graphics card and use DirectX or OpenGL to improve performance. I believe this would be the case even though we ultimately generate an image instead of sending the data the the screen. I believe our processes could still make use of the API and the hardware acceleration it provides. Our process is not unlike what CGI film makers do to render individuals frames of a film, though we simply render a single image and send it, as opposed to the hundreds of thousands of images needed for a single CGI film.
So my question is: would a powerful graphics card and use of DirectDraw or OpenGL provide us a worthwhile performance boost? It can take us 20-30 seconds to render a more complex map. Which is a long time to wait on a web page...

my system is fully designed but everytime I click a button that will to another form (which is also fully designed) the response of my system is to slow. Can you suggest anything to make it faster? The following code runs fine on JPEG files of around half a megabyte or less, but takes much too long (up to half a second) fora 2MB JPEG. Using the Stopwatch control, I isolated the problem to the two .DrawImage calls. Do I need to do this in DirectX or is there a way to improve the efficiency of the routine? I thought of trying to resize the two images beforehand to fit the rectangle, but that's not a simple call (I don't think), and it might just mean moving the delay elsewhere.

I've been searching for days. I can't find anything that I think is going to work. I've probably read the answer and skipped it because I don't get it. I'm new. I've researched multithreading, sub routines and webbrowser. The webbrowser thing doesn't seem professional to me.
All I want is the animation to be smooth when it's displayed and to have it integrated into the app so it's not called from the local drive.The animated gif is in PictureBox3. Please point me in the right direction. I really don't want to use a static image.

I'm considering working on a video encoding framework. Essentially a program to re-encode a video file from one format to another, using codecs which are widely distributed. (Codecs commonly found on the average PC.)Emphasis would be on reformatting - rescaling, cropping - in a visual environment. Is vb.NET a good environment for such an application or would it be wiser to look elsewhere?

Is it possible to capture the raw signal from a WiFi card in the same way you can capture the signal from a sound card? (I already found code for working with a sound card and for drawing spectrograms) I'm wondering because it would make a cool radio-type project. I'd prefer a solution that integerates well with .net (VB or C#).My basic goal is to capture the ambient radio waves and build a primative "telescope" of sorts. Using the built in computer hardware is just the easiest way to accomplish this. In my case, the video is 'live' incoming video from a USB capture device. The video-in-a-picturebox display code is a third-party function library, so there might ultimately be an issue of compatibility with this package... so ideally, the solution ought to be something that does not directly interact with the video picturebox (other than to lay on top of it).
Here's my situation: I have a control with motion graphics (for the sake of simplicity, a 'video player' control) in my project. Think of a PictureBox with constantly-changing images. In front of this will sit a second control (such as a second PictureBox of the same dimensions). The topmost PictureBox will be drawn to in its Paint event.
I need to draw very few elements, and the bottom control is updated much more frequently than I need for this drawing. So these elements are drawn to the topmost control. Think of a news broadcast, where they have live video in the background, with a news channel logo, news ticker, and sometimes gradient visible in front.
I'm trying to create that 'foreground' control, and the closest I believe I have gotten so far is the following:

The 'Opacity' property in the code above is a sort of "scaling factor." The image drawn to the top control may, in different parts of the image, have any alpha value from full transparent to a full 255. This 'Opacity' property is applied to the entire image being drawn, scaling the alpha values of each pixel.

The issue i have is that i can't move the program to another computer because the pathname for the video will be wrong. I know i could change the pathname when i move it but this is not practical because i need to present this program. Does anybody know how to make the video accessible no matter what location the program is at?
View 6 RepliesI am monitoring 12 video feeds from video cameras. Now I have more than 12 cameras, I have 134. But I will only monitor 12 cameras at a time. By Monitoring I mean, I have 12 small video screens on the form that I can see the video. The way I know which cameras are active, so I can monitor them is by a boolean value in a sql database. I run a Store Procedure in my program, and spit out the results in a XML file. I then read the XML file in a loop. This XML file will have a list of the camera names I need to monitor.
So that is for 12 video feeds. Now, I want to have a NEXT or FORWARD button on my monitor form. So when I click this it will give me the next group of cameras, 13 to 24. Now if I only have15 cameras that are active, that means the first group is 1 to 12, then the second group is 13 to 15 cameras. So I will only have 3 to monitor on the second grouping. One thought I had was to have another field in my table to mark as already as an active monitor, so when I run the SP, i will not select that row. But I need to select 12 at a time. Or I can make a number of xml files, one xml file for each grouping of 12, but I need to figure out how I can select the next group without re-selecting the first group. I have no code at the moment, I'm on my non-programming computer.
