Refer To A Control From Within A Control's Method (like The "me" For Classes)?

Dec 28, 2010

How can I refer to the control while I am inside a control's method in VB.NET?For example, I want in a textbox to show a message box with that textbox's text every time the text changes. The code would be something like:

Private Sub TextBox1_TextChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles TextBox1.TextChanged

Make A Control Refer To Itself?

Jan 13, 2009

Im working on a project and just wanted to know to make a control refer to itself?I know that by using the word "Me", the system refers to the form but how about the control. I know that i can simply name the control (e.g. txtSurname.Clear) but if i was to use the code on multiple controls it would save alot of time if the control could simply refer to itself!

Refer To A Windows Form Control By Name (C# / VB)?

Jul 24, 2009

Suppose I have a label control on a windows form called "UserName". How can I refer to that label programmatically using the label name? For example I can do:

For each ctrl as Control in TabPage.Controls
If ctrl.Name = "UserName" Then
' Do something
End If
Next

This seems quite inefficient. I would like to do something like: TabPage.Controls("UserName").Text = "Something" I did some googling but couldn't find a satisfactory answer. Most suggested looping, some said .NET 2005 doesn't support direct refenece using string name, and FindControl method was asp.net only...

Asp.net - Refer To User Control's "strong" Type

Apr 28, 2011

I have code like this which loads a control from an .ascx file, calls some methods of the control, then renders it:

Option Explicit Off

Sub renderMyControl(p As Page)
Dim ctrl as Object = p.LoadControl("path/to/myControl.ascx")
' ... do stuff with ctrl ...

[Code]...

This code only works because Explicit is off. I would like to use CType to convert the control to its "strong type" (and get rid of Option Explicit Off) but I don't know how to add a reference to the type. How can I do this?

Partial Classes - Add A Control Or Change A Property At Design-time

Mar 26, 2008

In my never ending search for more knowledge, I have come across Partial Classes. I was wondering if some of the kind people who actually understand the uses could explain some of them to me. Now I know that when we create a form that we actually create a partial class which the generator rewrites when we add a control or change a property at design-time, and this allows us not to have to worry about setting up the controls ourselves.

'True' Control Transparency - Control With Motion Graphics (simplicity, A 'video Player' Control)

Dec 29, 2010

Here's my situation: I have a control with motion graphics (for the sake of simplicity, a 'video player' control) in my project. Think of a PictureBox with constantly-changing images. In front of this will sit a second control (such as a second PictureBox of the same dimensions). The topmost PictureBox will be drawn to in its Paint event.

I need to draw very few elements, and the bottom control is updated much more frequently than I need for this drawing. So these elements are drawn to the topmost control. Think of a news broadcast, where they have live video in the background, with a news channel logo, news ticker, and sometimes gradient visible in front.

I'm trying to create that 'foreground' control, and the closest I believe I have gotten so far is the following:

Imports System.Drawing
Imports System.Drawing.Imaging
Imports System.Drawing.Drawing2D

[CODE]...

The 'Opacity' property in the code above is a sort of "scaling factor." The image drawn to the top control may, in different parts of the image, have any alpha value from full transparent to a full 255. This 'Opacity' property is applied to the entire image being drawn, scaling the alpha values of each pixel.

Using Inheritance-Based Controls - Creating As New Classes (not UserControls) Inheriting From An Existing System Control

Oct 15, 2011

I seem to be having a problem with controls that I am creating as new classes (not UserControls) inheriting from an existing system control. Everything seems ok while I create the control code, through to the compile (which is successful and adds the control to the toolbox) and dragging the control from the toolbox to the GUI surface. However, when I then debug or compile the project, I get a message such

Invoke A Method Rather Than A Control?

Aug 20, 2009

1. On the main form a scanner class is instantiated that (in the scanner's constructor) sets the scanner settings (baud rate, parity, etc) and opens the scanner for use

2. A barcode is scanned (via a scanner connected to the device in a seral port) while on the main form

3. In the scanner class, the DataRecieved event gets the needed info from the scanned code.

4. Then that info is passed back to the main form to a method RunCommandCode (which takes the scanned info as an argument)

5. On the main form the RunCommandCode calls another method CommandCodeHandler, passing the scanned info again

6. In the CommandCodeHandler sub a method is called in a Utils class (SetSelectedTab), which interacts with the form itself (determines how many tabs exist on a tab control), which is the reason for the invoke in the first place

So, before I figured out I needed to use the Invoke method (and, more specifically, that the scanner was working in a different thread), I was getting an error in step 6 on the line that got the TabControl.TabPages.Count.

Method Of Using A Tab Control To Act Like A Wizard?

Oct 27, 2009

I am new to VS and evaluating VS 2010. I am trying to create a wizard type control, on which various controls are on each tab. I then want to turn off the tab description and outline and control which tab controls are displayed by programmatically selecting each or one specific tab. Also require to be able to place a control above a tab (not on any of the tabs, which will mean that the control is visible whenever the form is displayed

I am trying to duplicate the characteristics of the Clarion (Soft Velocity) language tab control.

I have noticed that the tab control does have a "visible" attribute and if turned off that none of the tabs are visible. I guess what I need is a "visible" attribute (most probably inhereted from the parent tab control ) which can be programmatically changed.

Have One Control Validate On Leave(Method) Without Another Triggering It?

Mar 26, 2011

I am still in the conceptual(planning) stage so I do not have a code to show as an example.[code]...

Example: A user visits the form, the cursor by default(Tab Order) is in the first TextBox. If the user tries to leave the box without

entering any information an error is displayed. The user cannot leave the TextBox(MaskTextBox) unless they enter valid data.

If the user enters valid data the error message goes off and the user is able to leave to the next TextBox.

I also have a bunch of RadioButtons, CheckBoxes and NUD that I would like the user to play with without trigger the error messages on the TexBoxes. If the user click a check box or radio button, I need the error message to stay off, the error message should only trigger if a user click in a text box and a: Decides to leave without entering data or b: enters a wrong data.

I know other ways to do this, example using a submit button to do this. However is my idea possible? Can you have a field(controls) the validate on leave and click other fields(controls) without triggering it?[code]...

No matter what chain of events happens i would like to beable to have a method is always the last thing to excute. I plan on using the method to check the form and the data on it. I have no issues righting the method, I just don't know if their is a event or some other way to make sure it is always the last thing to excute. (Sorta like a validation method) Is their an easy way to do this?
