Detect The Insertion Of USB Memory Sticks And Prompt The User To Accept The Device Or Reject It?
Sep 14, 2009
I'm writing a small application to detect the insertion of USB memory sticks and prompt the user to accept the device or reject it. Rejecting it would prevent its being loaded by Windows. I have the code that detects insertion & removal working fine but have no idea how to cancel the insertion.I was thinking that I could intercept the DEVICEARRIVAL message and kill it off before its actioned by Windows but I am lost with this.code to show the way.Heres the main part of the code I have so far-
Protected Overrides Sub WndProc(ByRef m As System.Windows.Forms.Message)
'This kills off any 'autoplay' capability in the stick
If QueryCancelAutoPlay = 0 Then[code]......

I know you can do it with an WMI event or overriding WndProc and looking for the right messages, but i was wondering if there wasn't something hidden in the net framework that makes this task easyer.

Why is it that this VB.NET code only works for detecting flash disks?
Select Case m.WParam
Case WM_DEVICECHANGE_WPPARAMS.DBT_DEVICEARRIVAL
MsgBox("USB Inserted")[code].....
What would be the possible way to detect the insertion and removal of other USB peripherals, such as mouse and keyboard?

I want to detect when a new usb-device (can be anything) is connected to the computer. I don't need to know what kind of device it is, I just want to know when it is plugged in.
I found this thread: [URL]
I know the solution is in here, but I'm overlooking it I'm afraid. What I want:
USB-device connected > Run function. USB-device disconnected > Run another function.

I'm trying to detect the insertion of a USB-Serial COM port device. I found an example that shows how to detect a new USB device - and that part is now working well in my project. The question is, how do I pass on that event back to my Form1 class? In the example, I can create a MsgBox just fine, but if I try to manipulate any of the controls on my form, or raise a user-defined event, I get this message: 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in System.Windows.Forms.dll

I posted the message below in the VB6 section of this forum with no success, but as I've now got access to VB2008 via work, I thought I'd try again here. Basically I'd like to be able in code navigate to a folder held on a mobile device like a mobile phone connected to a pc using MS Activesync? It shows up in the drive list within "My Computer" as a system folder, I've vb6 code to detect all the drives including network mapped drives but not the mobile device.Ultimately I'd like to do file copying when my program detects a mobile device has been connected.

I am trying to write a VB program to automatically detect and identify a particular device that will only communicate to my program when I have 2 or more devices plug into the USB port. One way of doing it that I can think of is to scan through the available port and do a write and read to identified the port. But that would take up a lot of time if I were to scan through say 5 available port.

I'm making "Sticky Notes" and I want to be able to pin those stickies to the desktop. Sorta like a BottomMost function. Is there something like that I can use and if not, how would I even go about making a function that would keep my form on the desktop?
'Pins the program to the desktop
If saved = False Then
saved = True : PinToDesktopToolStripMenuItem.Checked = True : lblClose.Visible = False : Me.ShowInTaskbar = False
Else
saved = False : PinToDesktopToolStripMenuItem.Checked = False : lblClose.Visible = True : Me.ShowInTaskbar = True
End If
The reason I'm not going to mark it resolved is because if I click pin to desktop and the desktop isn't the application directly under my application then I have to minimize every program to get it to stay on the desktop.

I need to prompt the user to input a few key/value items.Instead of building a form with a bunch of label + textbox, I figured I could use a simple, unbound grid.
I know the ListView widget can be displayed as a grid, but it appears that some added code is needed to make it behave that way.If you've investigated the matter recently, which solution did you end up using?

I am fairly new to visual basic and have written this program to detect a change in a selected pixel on the screen. When the pixel changes, a sound plays every x seconds. It works fine but after a few hours of operation a possible memory leak causes it to either crash the program or the PC. I have watched the process and I can see 4k added to it every 4 seconds or so. Where this memory leak is coming from?
Here is the code:
Public Class Main
Public pointx As Long
Public pointy As Long
Public areaselected As Integer
Public TimeToPause, SecondTimer, changefound As Integer

I'm trying to figure out how to prompt a user to enter a captcha. Some programs out there have a little popup with the captcha image and a textbox, the user then enters the characters from the image and the captcha is solved by the user of the application. When I try to request the image directly, it gives me a different image than the one currently in the webbrowser control. Any ideas how I can create the pop up of this captcha image for the user to enter?
Note : . I'm looking for a way to prompt the user to enter a captcha from website.

Using a DataGridViewComboBoxColumn, the goal is to make the ComboBoxes accept user's new items and also the possibility of choosing items that are already present.I'm aware of using EditingControlShowing event of the DataGridView to change the DropDownStyle of the DataGridViewComboBoxEditingControl at run time to allow this, but I'm wondering if this can be done at a lower level.
What I'm doing now is extending DataGridViewComboBoxColumn, DataGridViewComboBoxCell and DataGridViewComboBoxEditingControl, hoping to change the EditingControl's DropDownStyle in the moment I instantiate it. So far, no luck.The debugger shows the right assignment is being executed, but nonetheless, the DropDownStyle is popping at the EditingControlShowing (using the event for debugging purposes) as DropBoxList, not DropBox, which is the intent.
Here follow the classes:
Public Class DataGridViewComboBoxColumnALT
Inherits System.Windows.Forms.DataGridViewComboBoxColumn
Public Sub New()
[code]....
