I have a procedure at the end of my console application that ask the user to either hit enter to end the program, or type s to perform another search. The issue I'm having is no matter what the user types in the program end. What I would like to happen is if the user types s, then the program starts over and lets the user perform another search. The program is procedural and I need to find a way to start back off at the top of the program which ask the user to type a name to search.

View 6 RepliesWhat would be the most clean & efficient method to make a page based interface, such as an installer?
I've had a few ideas, I could make a class for each control i'm going to use that has a Page ID number, and compare that against a global current page number, except I want it to be reusable, so that would mean i'd have to make a class for every control.
I am the author of the MAPM arbitrary precision math library. This is a library which allows the user to make any calculation to any desired precision level. The library is written in straight ANSI C.
On many occasions, I get an email on how to use the library from a VB.NET / Visual Basic application. I have very little basic experience, and I don't know what to tell them. I would really like to tell them how to proceed to call MAPM from a basic application.
Let's assume they can compile the library with a C compiler and create a DLL.
I'm trying to make a menu based off of an asp.net sitemap. How do you nest the sitemap nodes so that they all appear on the same level. Here is what I have:
<siteMap xmlns="[URL]" >
<siteMapNode>
<siteMapNode url="~/Default.aspx" title="Home" description="link to Home" />
<siteMapNode url="~/about.aspx" title="About" description="abot" />
</siteMapNode></siteMap>
Here is what the code for the Menu control looks like:
<asp:Menu ID="Menu1" runat="server" BackColor="#E3EAEB"
DataSourceID="SiteMapDataSource1"
</asp:Menu>
They both appear as 2nd tier elements underneath an arrow.
Is there a way to make one list box dependent on the other based on user input. Here's my situation: A teacher has the ability to enter the name of the student into a listbox via a textbox. The teacher may then select the student from the first student list box and input grades that would go into a grade listbox. If the teacher selects another student from the student list box, the grade listbox would either go empty or show the grades inputed for the other student; all the while retaining all previously recorded grades for other students.

Yup,not PHP but it's the same for readability)As you may imagine I want to make a simple text based rpg game, but that's not an important fact.The buttons btn1 to btn3 are already created at the designer, and there are going to be other procedures which will assign values to their text property according to the game context (main menu, combat, shopping, training, etc.) you're at.Ok, so what I want to do with that procedure I pasted is to parse the text of ANY of those buttons when I click them, and according to its value select a case which will trigger another appropriate procedure (now there are only msgboxes as placeholders for testing only).My problem is that I dont know how to refer to the originating class of the handled event! I mean, let's say I click btn2. I'll want to immediately get the text property of that button only and use it as the value for the select case tree. I suppose I need to put something at that ?I wrote there, but I don't have any idea. The first time I was so naive to put me.text in there, and of course it returned the form name. Is there's something to do this thing...? I thought at first it would be a very simple task, but I'm going nuts searching for a solution so it's like if it was not possible, but I find hard to believe that, because this would be very useful, right? By the way, what I want to achieve is not needing to make a separate procedure for each button and to avoid as well the need to move any game option to another procedure if later on I want to rearrange the menus, because I expect the game to have more than three buttons actually.
I've decided to make an new archiver based on existing dlls. View 6 RepliesI often think of classes and modules as "global" variables or variables you can use any where in your solution/project. can you make global timers? I basicly want to make a farming like game but the plants will grow based on a timer. So if the player closes that form the timer needs to still tick. So can I make global timers so the timer would not have to start over if the form is closed and reopened?

View 1 RepliesI have written a small GUI based vb.net program that speaks to embedded devices via the com port. The GUI code contains a class which all communication to the embedded device is handled through (com port device, communication protocol, parsing info, holding device related info after each read).That class is called EDComms.
I wanted to add a thread so that the EDComms object could run in the background and report back as it downloads logs files and such (It can take a while to get log files from the device sometimes).So. Should I have EDComms inherit from backgroundworker thread? Or should I have a background worker thread as a member of EDComms?Right now I am going with the second choice. The only thing I have to do now is write a func for registering two delegates from the GUI for notifying task progress, and notifying task complete.Or is there a better choice than these two I have presented Perhaps have the thread as a member of the GUI?
I am trying to convert a vb6 program based off of the coordinate system. VB.net does not seem to recognize any of it.
View 2 RepliesHow can I set focus on other application based on process name in VB2010?
What I can do now is set focus on other application based on windows name using FindWindow then use SetForegroundWindow. Below is what I currently have[code]...
The problem is that FindWindow need exact windows name to works and I don't always know the exact name. (Because my program open up different website that the user enter, so I have no control over they site they open). So is there anyway that I can set focus using the process name instead? Well this is a re-post now as nobody replied in the gaming section, and i believe this question could go as a normal VB question, therefore I'm asking in this category instead.I have decided to pick up on programming and want to make a text based RPG Game i will "upgrade" as my programming knowledge grows.I got some ideas that i think i should use, but i want you guys' opinions on it.I assume I'll use different classes for each monster, which will have properties.Should those monsters then be inside a list of all possible monsters, or would i have a monster class which i would use and generate the enemies when needed? And would i use the same approach on items and character stats?
View 4 RepliesI have 12 Boolean values in an array. Each of these values represent a CheckBox in my application. I want my program to output a string, based on each value not selected. Each of these values will have a predetermined string that is different from the CheckBox's caption and will be joined to create a final string. I want to generate all the possible combinations for when there are 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on up to 12 of these options at once. I can better explain my problem through the repetitiveness of the code below.

View 6 RepliesI'm working on a CNC control program, based on a DLL that someone else wrote. No problems with that sofar, as i get good support from the writer.
The problem i do have to tackle is the following: I want to acces all the functions by means of softkeys ( the F-Keys at the top of our keyboards ) when the program starts it shows the Main menu softkeys ( F1-F12), and each F-key has a function assigned to it, some will make the machine move, others will show another menu, or a fileopen/save dialog, depending on the chosen keys.
All works fine and handy-dandy, except for the F10 key, it seems to be "Sticky", when i press it, the program will not react to any other key, only the F10 key can get it back in "normal state" accepting every key with a function assigned..
How to "unstick" the F10 after pressing it?.. because pressing F10 now, means no other key will do anything, and that may become dangerous, when the machine is moving and it must be stopped..
