But im just curious as to why it errors as an onchange event. This is 9am pre-caffeine, so the reason is probably starring me in the face! On a form i have a text box, and a combo box. The combo box has various options in it, natch. Its a search form, which then fills a gridview with the results.
Drop down list options are: home number, mobile number, post code, Name, DOB
I thought id try and be "clever" and do away with the need for the combo box. Since a mobile number begins with "07", names are just characters, postcodes are character character number, and home number is all numbers and doesent begin with "07", and date of birth has /'s in it.
So i tried this to test the idea:

I am trying to get the first 50 letters, so I used the subString function to get it. As you can see, I used this code to get it:

I have this problem that I'm going in circles on. The error message is "no accessible IndexOf can be called with these arguments."
My professor said that "to search for the string Los Angeles and substring will return it from the textbox, but it needs to know what position to start returning a word at, and that is where the IndexOf comes in." They can't edit the code on the MF to give me a delimited file, so I'm stuck dealing with it as fixed width. It's working okay now, but I need to get it more stable before I release it for testing. My problem is that in any given line of data, say it could have three columns of numbers, each five chars wide at positions 10, 16, and 22. I would like to format output to a property of a custom control I have made.For instance I have a literal control in my control and when populated I want to check if it is longer than 30 characters long, if so, then go to the next space (as to not cut the word off) after the 30th character and place a <br /> tag in to place the next 30 characters on the next line.So if there were 100 characters in a string, there would be 3 line breaks in the label.I have the looping worked out to get the label populated but cannot get how to dymaically create the array based on the string lenth property and index of method.

I am trying to import a text file into a data table using VB.NET. I need to loop thru each line of the text file and put certain elements of that line in a new row of the data table. The line may contain 50 elements, but I only need to get 15 of them. The very first line is a header row, which contains "File Name", "Object Name", "Object Weight", etc. The trick is the element locations move from file to file. For example, "File Name" element may be located at 0 in one file and then 15 in the next file. I need to find the exact location of my desired elements and save them to a variable. Then use that variable to locate the exact piece of data in the text file line to place in my new row.
The code below obviously doesn't work, but it kind of illustrates what I need to have done.

I'm trying to create a valid RegEx replacement pattern for correctly formatting specific .XML file names. Specifically, if a file name does not begin with a prefix, let's say, ACE_. If the XML file name and extension does not begin with ACE_, prepend the string ACE_ to the file name.For example, if my input source string is the following:
Widgets.xml
I would like to execute a single RegEx Replacement that would result in the string being:
ACE_Widgets.xml.
Conversely, if the string already begins with ACE_, I would like it to remain unchanged. Also,how can I include the pattern ".xml" to ensure that the string pattern for the file name and extension ends with ".xml" in the same matching pattern for the RegEx Replacement pattern? As for the match, I have some luck with the following:
^ACE_{1}[dD]+
Which indicates there is a match for the pattern if the input string is ACE_Widgets.xml and no match if the string is Widgets.xml
The RegEx pattern would suffice, but if you need to know the language in which I'd like to use the replacement pattern is in .NET 4.0 in either C# or VB.NET.
