VS 2010 Stop Splash Page From Disappearing Until Done?
Oct 28, 2011
When my splash screen, I'm doing two tasks. First I'm checking for software updates and then installing them if they exist and second, I'm loading the main form with data.I don't want the splash page to close until these tasks have completed. I'm multi-threading it so I can update the UI accordingly, but that doesn't stop the splash screen from closing. The tasks in the background still complete of course, but that's not how I want to do it.

I have set up a class as a facade to access the session variables for my app. In this app I store an entire dataset for a particular employer as a session variable.Within one of the sub pages I have a button that adds a row to an existing table stored in that dataset.
Dim curRow As Data.DataRow = mySession.tWorksiteOtherMeasures.NewRow()
curRow("lngWorksiteID") = getSelectedWorksiteID(getSelectedSiteID())
curRow("strMeasure") = ""
curRow("lngStatusID") = -1
[code]....
When in the code to add the row the row count increments and the row exists. Once out of that scope the page refreshes due to the button being contained in an updatePanel. When that happens and I click the add button again the row counts for that item reset to 0 and 1 after the code runs. The previous added row is gone.Here is how the Dataset is assigned from the web service:
Public Shared Sub loadDSEmployer(ByVal strUserId As String)
Dim myService As New someservice.service
mySession.dsEmployer = myService.GetEmployerAndSites(strUserId, isInternal)
End Sub

RUNNING VERSION 2008 Basic I've decieded to put a Splash Screen on my software. My main question is how do you make it so the Splash Screen shows for about five seconds and then startup Form1.
Also, on the splash screen it auto-fills the info. Does anybody know how to get rid of that and make it custom?

I have tried to add a splash page to my app. I've tried the MinimumSplashScreenDisplayTime" Property, but it doesn't seem to work. (Don't bother trying to explain that to me again. I've given up on that.) Therefore, I will just work the splash screen as a form (like everything else). start it when the application starts and close it (automatically) after 4 seconds?

Ok, getting a little frustrated. I'm a new VB programmer (just a few months). Let me show you the start of my code so you can see what I'm trying to do:

I created a form and have the variable inputs for 4 motor run statements. Then with a start button the script starts and it is surrounded by a for next statement to loop 10 times. It works fine but if i need to stop the execution of the script with a stop button. I put the stop in a new section but of course does not work to do a motor stop. It just causes the exe to not respond till the loop is complete. Just need to be able to stop the Run1_Click button section.
Edit:I do not mind if it finishes the 4 motor run commands and then stops execution of the loop. So need to figure out a way to trigger a stop from a button on the form to stop the cycle. For the future the loop will be a variable integer input so 10 will not be the standard.
Edit::Does a ' Do ' statement sound like the thing to use? If so how and where would I place that? Have a Stop button on the form and it would stop after the 4th motor run command.

I am using the ASP 2.0 Web admin tool to authenticate users using forms. I can deny a user other than admin from viewing my maintenance folder using the code below. However, if a user is denied access it throws you back to the login page. Is it possible to show an 'access denied' message or at least simply do nothing?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

I have a START and STOP button and when the user clicks "start" the program does a whole bunch of calculations and all. However, I noticed that when I was testing the program I clicked STOP the program continues to execute stuff.
My START code is basically a while loop that iteratively does some calculations.
So I just put a boolean variable as the while condition and when user clicks stop its set to false and when user clicks start its set to true. However, when I click stop, the condition is set to false yes but it still executes all the code until the condition is re-evaluated right...so my question is how can I get out of the while loop when user instantly clicks "stop"?

Is there a way of stopping the main page waiting for a usercontrol to load before it can finish loading?
I have a usercontrolthat has to do a lot of DB calls which can take a few seconds making the page slow to load. Ideally I'd like the main page to load straight away and then the usercontrol content appear when it is ready.

I need that my application have a splash screen, this splash must update a label with messages that i sent from the main form constructor, in the end of the constructor i need to close the splash, the splash must accept key presses, so if the user press some keys I'll show the login screen, by default the login it's the same of the machine, and this is useful for debugging/tests purposes.Basically i need to send text to another thread, and get a boolean value from the same thread to know if the user pressed the correct combination of keys to show the login form.

I have a Windows Form Application to which I added a splash screen created using the splash screen template. I also added an MDI Parent Form. In my project properties, I chose the splash screen and the MDI Parent as the loading form.
I want the MDI Parent to load Maximized, so I changed the WindowState Property in the list to do just that. Now here is the problem:
If I leave the WindowState set to Normal, the splash screen loads, does its thing, closes, then loads my MDI Parent just like it is supposed to, BUT, if I set the WindowState of the MDI Parent to Maximized, the splash screen displays for about a second, the MDI Parent loads on top of the splash screen, and the splash screen finishes in the background and then closes.
I tried giving Focus back to the splash screen in the Lost Focus event but that didn't work. I know splash screen is still open and working when it gets covered up because I can hit ALT+TAB and see it just before it closes on its own like its supposed to. I also never adjusted any of it's time settings or any other settings.
How do I keep the splash screen on top while my MDI form is Maximized? or how do I delay the MDI until the splash screen has done its job? I dont understand why I am getting this result.

I have a tab control in my Main Form which has 2 tab pages, each of which are a different form. I create them as:
Dim UserManagementForm As New UserManagement()
Dim FileManagementForm As New FileManagement()
Then set them up via:
UserManagementForm.TopLevel = False
UserManagementForm.Parent = TabControl1.TabPages(0)
UserManagementForm.FormBorderStyle = FormBorderStyle.None
UserManagementForm.Dock = DockStyle.Fill
[code]....
I have a PrintForm component on my form and I am trying to send the currently active tab page to the print form and then send it to the appropriate dialog. However, I keep getting the document contains no images. Any ideas how I pass the tab page to the print form component?

I have an MDI parent screen that loads on startup and a lot of child forms that load when opening. So as the child forms load there's a lot of flashing and it looks really ugly. Once they're loaded all I have to do is use a bring to front, maximized command and it works smoother than closing a form and opening a new one every time a different form is selected. I've tried creating a splash screen, minimizing the forms on load, etc and everything still works in order so first the splash screen then the forms load.
How would you set it up so a splash screen stays on top of all other forms for like 5 seconds while the forms load in the background without seeing them load? Right now the screen shows then when it's done it moves on to step 2 which is loading the child forms. If no splash screen, how do I make it load so you don't see all the child forms opening at once?

1. Just looking for some general help on how to auto update my application via a file location path (e.g. I have a HTML file containing the current file version and the .exe file to download)
What I need is to read in the HTML file version - DONE Check file version vs HTML file stream input - DONE Replace current .exe file with new .exe file - HAVING ISSUES WITH THIS
I know I have to close the application and then replace the old exe file with the new exe file then restart the application but looking for the best/safest way this can be done

I have a sub routine that connects to a database. If the database is unavailable it takes about 45 seconds to timeout, even though I used connect timeout=10 in the connection string.
So I figured I would try using a timer. This is how I have it
Private Sub SQLConn()
Timer.start()
SQL.Open()
Timer.stop()
Private Sub Timer2_Tick
(this is where I need to put a command to stop the sub SQLConn)
I have the timer set at 10 seconds. Unless there is a better way to do this what command can I use to stop the connection or the sub?

When my full-screen sized Form is reduced in size by clicking on the "restore down" [i.e.] not to the minimized size but to in-between max and min, the scroll bar disappears. Is there a way to keep it automatically from disappearing [i.e.] to keep the scroll bar in view and available for use without having to make an adjustment to bring it back into view?

I have a code which when used, firstly application will run the Splash Screen application. Splash Screen will be active for several second, and then the main of application will show in full screen. Before the user use the application, user must Log in first. This works but the problem is that it loads the splash and login form twice. To worsen the situation, the second login form that appears gives access to the system even when the cancel button is clicked while the first login form just works fine. My codes for the three forms are as listed below:

whenever I have to convert something to a value (for example,lets say I have to convert something to
a boolean) visual studios will give you their advice of CBool, which works, but that's VB6 and I do
not want that. If you know of a plugin that does it, I'm open to that as well.

I am using VB 2010 , I have a loop that takes something like 5 minutes until it's finish. I want to allow the user the option to stop it in the middle or whenever they want. There's a button which starts the loop, and after I click it the loop starts running and the button is sort of "stuck".I saw something called "background work" in the VB Toolbox, can it be a solution to my problem?

I have even checked its Index property , it's 12
