How to develop a 3 tier soution saying this. If you want to make a simple 3 layer system (3tier is for a longtime complete misused by marketing from Microsoft, 3 tier needs something like a Unix computer) However, do this: start a Windows Form project, then do 2 times File -> Add New -> Project -> Class Library while you name one DataLayer and the other BusinessLayer. While the DataLayer project is selected, you do Add New Item and take the Component (give it the name DataBaseHandling). Then while that component is open. In top Data -> and than what you want to select, however create in fact the DataSet and Adapter in that.
Don't forget to set in your main project a reference using Poject -> Project too your two datalayers. It is easy and don't need all those images, those you will see pasing by doing this. Try to avoid to use your DataLayer in your BusinessLayer which is often done, because then those layers make in fact no sence. i am not an expert The bussiness and datalayer in the same solution really? What kind of component should i choose? and what about the presentation layer? how to call one layer to the other,
I am a fairly rookie programmer who is trying to learn the basics of n-layered architecture (DAL, BLL, UI). The application I am programming is a single tier, 3-layer application written in VB.NET (.Net 3.5). Layers as follows:
DAL BLL UI COMMON - contains DTO's right now.
I am having trouble determining what to pass between my BLL and UI. My instinct tells me that I should only pass data to the UI, and not the full business object from the BLL. Consider two scenarios:
1) Pass the BO directly from BLL to UI. This exposes BO methods and allows the UI direct access to the BO, which seems bad.
2) Pass only the pertinent data from the BO to the UI. For instance, a customer has a Name and Address. This data is really what we want to show/edit in the UI, so we would only return that data to the UI instead of the full BO. The UI would then call to the BLL to update a specific BO.
I am inclined to use #2, but I don't know the best way to implement it. The way I have it programmed now, if I only return data from the BLL, all references to my BO's will be lost and the GC will claim them. Based on this, I have some questions:
1) Should I keep business objects alive between calls to the BLL? The alternative is to re-create them every time I pass data through the BLL, which seems wrong.
2) What is the best way to keep a BO alive in a single tier architecture (how to hold a reference if we dont pass it to the UI?)
3) How do n-tier applications do this? Do they keep the BO's alive in the BLL and wait for an update from the UI? Doesn't this require a lot of "book keeping" in the BLL to make sure BO's are released when they are no longer needed?
I built as email marketing system a while ago and I have been asked to add a feature that should have been there from the start really.OK i have a structure that holds a list of IDs, Email address and Departments when the end user goes and presses the email button the for each statement goes though each Item in the structure (Except the first) and pings off a HTML email.This is stored in a Form as the user has had to pick the email template from a list.
The code is below but as you can see if a message fails, fro any reason the rest of the list gets missed and exit sub!
I am generally following this tutorial, the main differences being I'm using 2008 R2 Express and Windows Forms, he is using 2005 & ASP.NET Web Site:'m building a minimalist Windows Form project for learning purposes. So I'm using a 1-table database with 2 columns, ContactID & Name. I added a dataset file, 'ContactsDataSet.xsd' to my project and added a single minimalist table adapter with just a fill() & getdata() method.Then I added a DataGridView control and connected it to the ContactsDataSet to confirm it was working and that worked fine. I ran it and it filled up with data as expected. Everything up to this point was auto-generated code.
i know how to make a simple login system but im not sure how to script it. I make a txt stored at a website. And i will open it with a invisible textbox (to login, only username requed). Im still a bit newb to coding in Vb but Im trying to figure out how to make a simple inventory system for my video game. I need it to do a few simple things and Ive never made a inventory system before so im a bit lost on how to approach it.

I set up my armor menu to allow drag an drop of the item but again not sure how to even get the inventory system created to finish the armor menu to allow the object to be dragged into its box and remove its self from the player inventory.I think I need to make a array for 39 or 40 in my adventurestorage class. That part Im pretty certain of but how do I set that part up? I have over 200 images that need to act as a item that can be dropped into the inventory.
Which options are there to make your 3-Tier System.Client / Common / Server Now we work with the entityframework and agatha. But are there other options to make a good 3-Tier system?
The agatha framework, makes for us the request/response on the common site. On the server site the response will be filled in. But are there other framework to do all that work for you? Or should you do it without such framework. And call at the server site stored procedure? Or with LINQ? With the agatha we query the repository's with some LINQ queries.
But i am wonna know if there are other ways to do the communication. Maybe there are other and better ways to do it. I hope i get some usefull answer. Where i can read some new things.
Dear Developers, I have a problem with combobox AutoComplete mode. it appears that when I set the DropDownStyle = simple , I cant select text with the Enter key Or with mouse click can someone please explain me how to bypass this problem?
In a windows forms application I am attempting to read a file from a share into a filestream.I then start impersonating and write the stream to another share that only my impersonation account has access to.This works fine for small files. I am working in VB.NET defining my own classes. I have 5 classes, Policy, Coverage, CoverageCollection, Layer, and LayerCollection. Policy has a bunch of data items, one of which is of type CoverageCollection. Coverage has a bunch of data items, one of which is of type LayerCollection.

Then I do like "dim p as Policy". So, iIn order to get to properties on a Layer, I reference it like p.cov(0).lyr(0).face. What I am trying to do is add a readonly property to Layer that is calculated using some Layer information but also using something from Coverage (or even Policy). I can take this in as a parameter to the property, but I think there should be a way to get at Coverage/Policy information since I am "under" it already. Is there a way to do this?
Trying to make a simple browser with some simple addon's. What Ive done is setup a menu(forum) for the user to enter their email providers web address and it will save it in a xml file. When they click on the email link, it should load the email xml iformation and place that info in the tb_html.text and navigate. I keep getting a null exception and im not sure what going on here. I am writing a Marketing email program so we can email news letters and the lke to customer listed in our database.One part of the application is a email templates page. On this there is a tabpage. Tab1 has a textbox and teb2 has a browser window.The user pastes/write HTML code in to the text box and it displays the formatted email/html in the browsers window.
The users just want to edit the text from time to time and within VS.NET and TEXPAD the html code is colour coded depending on the html tags.I guess this can not be done in my textbox1 but can it be done in a rictextbox and text_change event?

I have a code keypress that automatically input a text in a particular textbox if the text i pressed match the fields.eg. when I type 32 in the ID textbox . The name of the person whos ID is 32 will be put on the name text.it works perfectly but when I use autocomplete on the textbox it will not work anymore. is their a way or can anyone tell me why it isnt working.?eres the code for the keypress

Basically the items that are in the list box are loaded from a text file hidden in the installation directory so a manager (or such) will be able to edit which websites are navigate-able.Here comes the problem though, I have not been able to get it to work correctly it will not block any of the listbox items. I am creating a game which has a simple score system which I don't understand why it isn't working the way I want it to. When loading the game the User starts with 10 credits and for every time they run the game it costs 2 credits

It has no errors but it doesn't take away the credits each time the game is played besides the first time. So when I run the game it will go to 8 credits, and it will stay on 8 credits even if I run the game again.
Is there any difference between using the Microsoft.VisualBasic.DateAndTime.Now compared to the System.DateTime.Now? I seem to remember reading something that said the MS.VB namespace was for legacy use only, and was much slower than using the native .net classes.
