Generate Notifications Whenever An Event / Error Occurs
Jun 30, 2009
I am currently using Snarl to generate notifications whenever an event / error occurs in my program. How would I go about coding a native VB notification instead of using a 3rd party program?
I'm trying to validate a few things in a form I'm building. It has a datagrid with clients info (taken from an access database) and a few textboxes where the user can type some search criteria. The thing is that those same textboxes are used to add new clients to the database and to modify a client's information if one from the datagrid is selected, so I made it that the buttons to insert and modify clients are disabled on load and thenevery time the text on a textbox changes ("TextChanged" event) they become enabled. So far so good. But then I wanted to make it so when a client from the datagrid is selected both buttons become disabled again until the text on a textbox changes (to make sure they're adding a different client and not the same one that was selected).
I tried using the CellClick event from the datagrid to disable the buttons, but since every time a client is selected from the datagrid the info is shown on the textboxes, this triggers the TextChanged event too, and the buttons become available. So, is there a way I can tell the TextChanged event not to be triggered when the CellClick event occurs?
I have a system with 26 buttons but the buttons actaully run the same code; aside from the fact that the index number is used to distinguish between them (es, I know index values are out so I am using the object's name (btnKey1, btnKey2, etc).
Is there any event that occurs for all button presses or do I need to write the same line for all 26 events (actually 52 since I am using MouseDown and MouseUp - will get worse when I want to use the keypress side)?
I have a program that a textbox pops up for 30 sec. What I want to do is this: Have it go away after 30 sec if the user does not enter anything in it and hit return of click the ok button. But if they DO I want the timer to reset back to 30 sec. I have tried disabling and enabling the timer event--- sending a new interval, and spent some time looking in the Forums.
I am using timers in a windows service and facing problem that anytime some exception happens ( say i unplug LAN wire from my computer ) service stops running, What i am expecting is that service should keep on running as i am catching generic exception which should catch the exception on one tick event and again work (next tick)when i plug in LAN wire (i am plugging/un plugging ) LAN wire as this service is reading database from LAN so i want to replicate a failover scneario)
I have a VB6 DLL that wraps a call to a 3rd party component. When I call my DLL from VB6, everything works fine, but when I call it from vb.net (2.0 framework targeted - VS2010) I get this error:
AccessViolationException occurred
Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. This error only occurs on Windows 7 (Windows XP clients work fine).I've looked this up and all the articles I found talked about the declaration not being correct.I am not declaring any APIs calls though, the 3rd party component is early bound in my VB6 DLL.I can run the DLL, set a breakpoint, and it goes into my VB6 function, but errors calling a function in the 3rd party component. My VB6 DLL takes 3 string and one 32bit numeric (long in VB6) parameters. The 3rd party's DLL function that I am calling is taking a string (bstrDNSID as string is what Intellisense shows in VB6). This is where it errors.
Update: None of the marshalling has helped, so I tried creating a test sub in my VB6 DLL. I hardcoded all the values within the DLL's test sub. It works fine when called from VB6, but gives the same error as above when running from .NET. Also of interest, when I have the VB6 DLL running from the VB6 IDE, I do not get the error when calling the DLL from .NET.
I have an error appearing in my webbrowser, and as there doesn't seem to be a solution to stopping it, i'm attempting to just detect when it occurs, and use sendkeys to press enter.[code]..
I wanted a Message Box to appear when a file can't be found, for example. I made a Combo Box (ComboBox1) and a button, this is what the code was:[code]If a file can't be found, I want a message box to appear, not an Error Provider, I tried this code, but it did not work:[code]
My asp.net website logs errors when they occur, but only sometimes shows the line of code where it occurred. Is there a way to find out what line of code my error is occuring on when the line is not provided? My Global.asax logs the error with the following code:
Sub Application_Error(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) 'Get MemberNumber Dim MemberNumber As String
[code]....
It looks like the checkbox labeled "ckAdmin" is causing this error, but I do not know how to trace it. How should I go about tracing down this error or finding the line of the code this error occurs in?
I am having an issues with my code causing my forum to close after an error occurs during a SaveFileDialog. My problem is if the form closes after an error occurs that doesn't save the file, the person would lose their text they made. If there a way I can embed the code in an If statement or Try catch so it only closes if the file was saved? Here is my
if the rows CurTXId is 0 then I insert new records. and then call AcceptChanges on the PeopleTable.now if I have an error, for example conversion from null to Decimal causes an error and the first insert occurs before the error. now i have a row inserted but AcceptChanges hasn't been called yet.then i click save again and the insert happens again since the rowstate hasn't changed.how should I handle this?[code]
As part of a review of my program on Softpedia, the Reviewer stated the following: If you call on a piece of software and it is not installed on your computer the application will pop up a nasty error message that may discourage beginners. Popping a dialog saying the reason of the error or that the software is not installed on the system would be a great fix.
So, concering my project: I am trying to control an RC Car via Kinect, until now I got it working with key control only (eg WASD). So, I am using a Velleman K8055 Interface Board + the Kinect and VB Windows Forms. So far, so good, I created 4 Forms: menu, info, kinect-controls + wasdcontrols window. The error only occurs for my kinect-controls window (german name: Steuerung.vb) & that's my source
I have an application where I make calls to multiple SQL Server Stored Procedures, keep the user aware that the program is still running and how long the specific SP has been running so that they can abort it if it's taking too long.
My initial attempt was to wrap up each call to the SPs like this example:
Dim cm As SqlCommand = Nothing Dim Conn As SqlConnection = Nothing Dim Tran As SqlTransaction = Nothing Dim PrevTime As Date = Nothing
I have a table adaptor that pulls from the sql database, when I edit the table adaptor query it makes this specific table adaptor not a part of the dataset. I have added a column to my database which will contain an integer, when I try to add this column to the query this error occurs, i am using the configure area of the table adaptor. Error 'AuditProductsTableAdapter' is not a member of 'MemKingClient.MemKingDataSetTableAdapters.TableAdapterManager'.
I created a simple program which basically launches programs installed on 32-bit system in the C:Program Files directory. I purposely put an .exe line of code in the compiler but that .exe wasn't installed on the system, I was expecting for an error when I tried to click the launch button and I did. NOTE: I already have a beginning If statement and that program is actually installed in the system, works perfectly no errors appearing.
ElseIf lstMultimedia.SelectedItem = "HyperCam" Then Process.Start("C:Program FilesHyperCam 2HyCam2.exe") 'this program doesn't exist in the system"
When the error appeared I looked at it in detail and found it was a system.componentmodel.win32exception type of error, I'm guessing that means a file doesn't exist in the directory I specified therefore the program displays an error. Now what I want to do is display a message box saying along the lines "This program cannot be found in your system" or something like that. But I don't know what the actual syntax/code for it, so far from thinking I have this.
Else : lstMultimedia.SelectedItem = 'no idea what to put here Then MessageBox.Show("This application cannot be found in your system or is installed in a different directory", "Error", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Error) End If
A form has many buttons. One of those buttons contains code to update the TableAdapterManager. One of the many TextBox controls has code in a Validating event handler. There is code to make sure a US phone number is formatted properly. If the user tabs out of the TextBox the Validating code works perfectly and show a message to the user if the phone number is not properly formatted and the focus is place in the offending TextBox.If the user clicks on a button that has code to update the TableAdapterManager the Validating code fires but instead of focus remaining on the offending TextBox, the code in the button Click handler also fires.
I would like to stop the button code from firing. Here is the code for the Validating event of the TextBox:
Private Sub TextBoxPrimaryPhone_Validating(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.ComponentModel.CancelEventArgs) Handles TextBoxPrimaryPhone.Validating ' Make sure the phone is formatted correctly.
[code]....
What additional coding to I need to include so focus remains on the TextBox?
I'm a VB6 programmer who was forced to upgrade to Visual Studio 2005 Version 8.0.50727.42 .NET Framework Version 2.0.50727. I am trying to write a call-back which will intercept a Windows message for when our USB HID device is plugged or unplugged. We have a custom .dll which handles the majority of the HID interface. I just need to call a few API's to connect to the device. I can connect and communicate.
I am looking at USB Complete Third Edition. The code examples do not compile. I'm unsure if this is because of the .NET version 2 or the 2005 dialog of VB. I cannot resolve "StructLayout..." statements, but the program appears to be working without them. I cannot get any "Marshal." statements to compile, which is where I am finding it difficult to get around.

Although OnDeviceChange() is being called six times, both IF statements fail. m.msg is 0x219, which is Device Change. m.WParm is always 7, m.lParm is always 0. And, this is where I'm stuck. m.lParm should be a pointer which gets me to the device path? Don't know what 7 is.
So, maybe I'm not registered to receive the proper messages from the device (or I'm looking in the wrong place). The missing step might be to call the RegisterDeviceNotification() API. This book is telling me to use frmMy.Handle declared globally as Friend frmMy As frmUSB - that gives me a null reference runtime error, so I swapped in Me.Handle for the first parameter to RegisterDeviceNotification(). It likes that. But, then it has heartburn with the buffer pointer - not so easy to resolve in Visual Basic. The call wants a LONG. I have DevBroadcastDeviceInterfaceBuffer, which the book says to use Marshal.AllocHGlobal(Size) and Size is Marshal.Sizeof(DevBroadcastDeviceInterface). Neither Marshal statement compiles and I'm not sure if it was removed in this version of .NET? Anyone? I really don't need a dynamically allocated buffer. This is quickie VB app for a single USB device.
Can anyone tell me how far down the rabbit hole I am and what I'm missing. I can tell when something changes to some USB device. I have a handle to that device supplied to me by a custom API library - probably is the HID handle.
How can I setup to receive a message when my HID USB device is unplugged or plugged in?
I am getting the below error when I click a row in the grid. But this error is raised only in exe, which is installed in client machine, but when I check the same from source code in my machine, i am not getting this error. I am able to locate the record.
I have a windows service I created that checks for data to post to an off site webservice over SSL. The service checks every 10 seconds for data to send, if there is data it opens a connection to the remote webservice, and closes the connection after 120 seconds (still checking for data to send during this time). The service works fine if a user is RDP'd into the server, but as soon as no one is logged on and the service attempts to push data, I receive the following error:"The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send."I have tried running the service as a local service, network service, under my login, and under a service account, but nothing seems to work. The PC it is running on is a windows 2003 server (virtualized - vmware)
Protected Overrides Function GetWebRequest(ByVal Uri As Uri) As System.Net.WebRequest Dim oWebrequest As System.Net.HttpWebRequest = MyBase.GetWebRequest(Uri) oWebrequest.KeepAlive = False oWebrequest.ConnectionGroupName = Guid.NewGuid.ToString oWebrequest.ProtocolVersion =
I am getting error in the following line of frmContacts.frm. The module code is quite right. I have mentioned the module code here just to give an exact idea .The error line is: .Connection = MyConnection (Wherever it is in the frmContacts.frm)The error read as : Name "Myconnection" is not declared.
take a shot from a camera every last day of the month at midnight. I know how to to take the shot, but I don't know how to generate an event repetitively after a time period. I thought about to calculate the time between now and the next shot time, but how to run a method after a time period?
I need to be able to raise different types of audio notifications to the user. I need an "ok" and an "error" type sounds, I was hoping to be able to raise a simple beep and a critical stop type sound but I can only find the Beep() command which doesn't allow for differing sounds. Is there a library that does what I need or will I need to roll my own using the system wavs.
Currently I have not found a way to generate an event when a user clicks on a line that is drawn in my workspace area. The line that is drawn is created by calling the function e.Graphics.Drawline(Connector,X1,Y1,X2,Y2), where Connector is a System.Drawing.Pen object and X1,Y1,X2,Y2 are integer coordinates of the two points to draw the line between. I have not found any events such as Click that are associated with the line that I can use. Do I need to create a custom event for these lines if so how do I go about this?
all this in datalist as you can see so it will be repeated..i have put one image in it now i want call a method when any image will be clicked i make one sub called s() in vb i want to call it i use on clientclick() event but doesn't work
I have a vb.net application in which there is a main form. There are around 10 classes each having their own functionalities like tcpactions, fileactions, serialport actions etc. The user interacts with the main form and does certain actions which will invoke the methods in these classes. Now I have a notifications textarea in the mainform and i want to show the current action being performed in those classes and their results in the notifications area.
for example when a user clicks a "Start Process" Button in the form i invoke the method "launchprocess" in a class "ProcessActions". Now this method tries to launch about 7 different process and after launching it sends notification such as "process 1 launched" or if it fails it sends notifications such as "process 1 launch failed".
I currently use event handlers and use them to show notifications but with the amount of events i have to handle it is getting cumbersome and i might have to add even more classes in the future. So is there a better way of handling notifications from other classes.
