View 7 RepliesI'm using Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition - Visual Basic.I'm very new to VB but I would like to create a program / splash screen that displays a list of files (Word, Excel, Project) that are located on a CD. I'm not sure how to start other than starting out creating a new project.
Here is how I would like the program to work. The user inserts a CD-rom (containing the program and a folder with all the files) the program automatically starts up when the CD is inserted and it displays a list of all the files on the CD. The user can click any of the files to start the program that created it. Example, if we have an Excel file called "Work Schedule", the user could click it and it would open in Excel.
After I've created the project and have a form, I'm not sure what tools I need to use to display the list of files.I'm not sure how I set up the connection (path) between the program and the folder containing all files, especially as they will all eventually be located on the same CD.

Have a bit of code ported from VB6 to VB.NET. It uses Write and WriteLine all the way to produce output files.
Now, I need to compare outputs from original and ported code, but there's one tiny problem with number formatting. For instance whereas VB6 code Writes just .5, the VB.NET code produces 0.5, instead of .0005 (in original) it writes 5E-4, etc.
How can I make VB.NET's Write to write numbers in the same format as VB6? The option of refactoring writing code to include formatting step is not acceptable.

I have to write a program that will allow a usert o track the invitation list for a party. The user can enter the name of a person to be invited. When the send Invitatin button is clicked, the name appears in the checked listbox. This counts as an invited person.When an invited person confirms that they will be attending, the user will check the name in the checked listbox. this counts as a confirmed person.
What I am having a hard time figuring out is the codes! What would I declare my integer variables to hold the count of invited persons and the count of confirmed persons? And how would I code a loop to check if the name enetered in the name textbox already appears in the list box, if so, display a message telling the user that this person has already been invited?

How to Create Video Games in VB.Net
I realize that this is a very popular subject, especially amongst budding developers. The drive to create games may be the reason you started working with Visual Basic in the first place. After stepping through a few samples and getting the hang of working with user controls on a form, it may be very tempting to start to throw some PictureBoxes and a Timer on a Form and start to implement some game logic. Seems easy enough, right?
To some extent, this is a true statement.You could start to do this and it would be easy enough at first. But when you begin to try to calculate collision and animate or rotate your sprites, you may start to run into some difficulty. And attempts to circumvent the problems often lead to even worse issues.This can cause an endless spiral of misery which could leave you thinking VB just isnt meant to make games!
The initial problem that most people face is the desire to use a PictureBox (or any other control) as the logical Sprite container for the elements in the game. It makes sense since the control appears to provide a lot of the required functionality already and its easy to extend it with more properties as needed.
The issue though is that Windows Forms Controls are designed to be drawn statically that is, they arent meant to move around in real-time. You can of course move them at run-time, but this is normally an on-demand operation (something which occurs because the user just took an action like clicking a button or menu item). Attempting to move controls in real-time puts a heavy strain on your application and can cause poor performance quickly.[code]....
I want the program to check the number of items in a list box, then send use that number to form a FOR loop and send each to the serial port individually. It actually sends everything, but the program always crashes after the last one saying that the sdprintcount variable is an invalid number for the index. I don't get it as this happens no matter how many items are in the list, and it always crashes on the last one. It sends it, but then it says the index number is invalid.

I made a program to cheat at scrabble/word games. I can find words that "start with" a group of letters, "end with" a group of letters, or "contain" a group of letters in the middle. Furthermore, I can enter all my letters, and look for all the words that contain those letters. I can even enter a "*" for a blank tile (in Scrabble) and it will try all the possibilities for the blank tile.
What my program doesn't do is find all the subanagrams. For example, if I enter the letters "BNAG", my program would find only 4-letter words. I want it to also find all the 2- and 3- as well as 4-letter words.
What's the best logic/algorithm for grouping my letters into groups of 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.?

ok what this routine is doing is on the results form is 2 dgv's the first contains stock to keep, the 2nd one contains excess stock to sell. what i get however is all cells on both DGV's are the last item to be read from the popular list. the items are adding correctly (varified with a breakpoint and looking at variables at the time. the popInventory item is added to the relevent List.
I have my program working that loads flash movies and games for my son to play offline. Some of the games have http links in them. Is there any way that still allows playing the game without launching a webpage request? I have no code for this part of the program because I don't know where to look. I think I am just looking on how to block requests for launching anything outside of the program, or catching the request while my program is running, but not quite sure what to do.

View 2 RepliesI'm supposed to write a program that validates an inputted ten digit ISBN number using the check-digit at the end to ensure that the sum is a multiple of eleven. Before calculating this and detecting if the entered number is indeed a valid ISBN, we're required to check the first nine digits and see if they are indeed integers. After this the tenth digit is checked to see if it is "X" (for ten) or 0-9.
With the code I've written it keeps returning false for whether or not the ISBN is valid, even with valid numbers. I feel like its something to do with the hyphens; have I misused the replace function?I'm a little lost on how to make my code work, but I'm fairly certain my logic is okay so far.

Create a variation of this program that allows the user to specify any starting whole number and any ending whole number (10,000 or lower) and then adds all the whole numbers in that range. Allow for the possibility that a user may start with a high number and end with a low number. Format the label so that commas are displayed and there are no decimal places showing.
